The Joburg City Theatres (JCT) an entity of the City of Johannesburg (COJ), operates Joburg Theatre (Braamfontein), Roodepoort Theatre and Soweto Theatre in order provide the integrated management of world class theatre venues and a high-quality entertaining, innovative and inclusive programme which serves diverse communities.

Designation: Lighting Technician (Ref No: JTLT/05/2023) 
Salary: R16 427.66 (basic salary excluding benefits)
 
Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited:
Inspect hanging lighting and audiovisual gear and ensure the safety of personnel and patrons ● Ensure all equipment as it relates to lighting and audiovisuals are in good repair. ● Ensure that no tripping, slipping, falling or any other hazard is created as a direct or indirect result of lighting ● Report and replace faulty equipment and make recommendations to the Technical Manager and Senior Lighting Technician to acquire new equipment when necessary● Report all mechanical faults to the Line Manager and maintenance department and ensure that they are rectified by following up. ● Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify any cause of problems and defects● Always apply and uphold safety practices outside of your immediate department ● Keep abreast of new safety innovations and motivate to the Safety Manager, Technical Manager, and Senior Lighting Technician for their inclusion. ● Interpret, coordinate, and implement lighting design according to client specifications● Supervise visiting and train adhocs Lighting Technicians / Crew with rigging, focusing, and wiring of the lighting system. ● Train and monitor adhocs Lighting Technicians to program lighting console and other devices. ● Maintain equipment, materials, tools, and supplies used in technical production and basic set design● Ensure all lighting equipment is correctly barcoded and located in the correct area. ● Diagnose and resolve media system problems● Provide production information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates● Keep abreast with production technology, new techniques, and special effects and apply knowledge in practice ● Obtain, set up and load videotapes for scheduled productions. ● Perform routine maintenance functions such as replacing lamps and damaged Colour filters or patterns and maintain lighting equipment in safe working conditions ● Ensure that no tripping, slipping, falling or any other hazard is created as a direct or indirect result of lighting and audio-visual equipment ● Inspect periodically all hanging lighting equipment and audio-visual gear and ensure the safety of personnel and patrons ● Determine the lighting requirements of productions, projects and events ● Change the set-up of lights during a performance or concert.
 
Appointment Requirements:
 Grade 12 or equivalent.
 Ability to program and operate complex lighting consoles and related equipment, wiring and patching of lighting fixtures.
 Ability to interpret lighting designs and stage plan/ layout.
 Knowledge of lighting design software such as AUTO-CAD, VECTORWORKS or WYSIWYG.
 Good understanding of audiovisual (AV)
 Computer literate (Windows and
 3 years of practical work experience in theatre environment or similar.

Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Put together an annual maintenance plan for the theatre ● To ensure maintenance is planned and implement as per the approved plans ● Evaluate and assign priorities regarding repairs and various jobs ● Perform Statutory and Ad hoc inspection of all electrical equipment and power generator systems and institute necessary action in the event of shortcomings ● Ensure that all existing equipment is regularly maintained and kept in good working condition ● Ensure reliable service of the stage technical requirements, inclusive of high voltage electrical fault detection and fault repair● Maintain and ensure electrical services, inclusive of fault detection and fault repair in respect of air-conditioning and electricity ● Diagnose equipment malfunctions and repair and adjust using the necessary test equipment, instruments and other tools of the trade ● Optimally respond to all emergency call outs and complaints and ensure best possible response time ● Maintain all motors, transformers and electrical controllers attached to large power systems ● Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and SHEQ requirements ● Ensure that the services delivered to the building in respect of electricity and air-supply are according to NOSA standards and maintained according to those standards ● Ensure monthly documentation of maintaining and cleaning of filters, electrical distribution boards and fan belts of Air Handling Unit 4 ● Ensure monthly documentation for the maintaining, cleaning of the LT Room, standby generator, control panel of the standby generator, checking and filling the diesel fuel to acceptable levels ● Ensure the documentation of Weekly Maintenance Records ● Ensure regular inspections and maintenance of all electrical equipment according to the safety act ● Check all wiring for loose connections, test contactors and relays and have the ability to replace these devices ● Ensure that all the electrical systems on all machinery are maintained and comply with the Machinery’s Act and SANS 10142 ● Check and record the run time of the standby generator and the diesel fire pump engine on a weekly basis ● Check that the fire control system is always operational ● Check that the standby generator control system is fully functional ● Use necessary computer software to fault find stage machinery control problems.
 
Appointment Requirements:
 N3 or Matric (NQF 4) plus Electrical Trade Test Certificate
 Basic computer literacy
 1-year work experience in the electrical field / artisan training
 Experience in AC / DC Drive and PLC

Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Maintain and clean filters and fan belts of assigned air handling unit on monthly basis ● Keep Weekly Maintenance Records ● Attend maintenance meetings when and as needed ● Report all installations and maintenance work done to the Building Manager ● Report all air conditioning faults to the air-conditioning technician ● Report all electrical faults to Electrical technician ● Conduct welding and metalwork when and where necessary● Assist with the building of Stage sets ● Do tiling work where necessary ● Assist with moving of stage machinery when needed ● Assist with plumbing work where needed ● Assist with cable installation where needed ● Do all mechanical work ● Wash and change filters of assigned air handling units ● Assist with wheel replacement and maintenance on all stage wagons ● Ensure general maintenance of building and fixtures ● Participate in different projects (e.g. renovations) ● Assist Building Technicians where and when needed Participate in all emergency action plans ● Conduct routine inspections of premises and equipment ● Perform preventative maintenance ● Perform miscellaneous repair and maintenance construction ● Ensure general installation and preventative maintenance ● Handle basic repairs and maintenance ● Clean worksites including hauling debris and trash to the dumpster ● Ensure cleaning of tools and equipment and ensuring tools, materials and equipment are stored properly ● Assist all contractors when professional repairs are necessary ● Ensure and promote stage work procedures according to the Safety and Health Regulations ● Report all ladders used for safety and repair to the Electrical Technician.
 
Appointment Requirements:
 Grade 12 plus welding certification,
 Experience in boiler making and sheet metal work experience.
 1 year of related experience
 Experience in tiling, plumbing and carpentry will be an added advantage

Key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Develop and manage production budgets and to ensure that the production is completed within budget ● Manage and supervise the production staff ● Lead and supervise all production and design meetings within the organisation ● Create and manage the production calendar ● Manage and supervise the facilities with the Technical and Facilities Manager (office, storage space, performance space, lobby, green room) ● Schedule and supervise technical rehearsals in consultation with stage management and director ● Responsible for scheduling and supervising strikes and ensuring that safety measures are adhered to at all times ● Allocate and set the rehearsal venues for in-house and visiting productions ● Develop and lead a highly motivated and collaborative production team which includes director, set designer, lighting designer, costume designer, musical director, publicist, choreographer, stage managers etc. ● Ensure that visiting companies meet space requirements ● Meet bi-weekly with Artistic Director ● Promote Soweto Theatre’s work locally, nationally and internationally ● Secure invitations for Soweto Theatre's own productions to travel nationally and internationally ● Responsible for sourcing value-add partners and sponsorship ● Responsible for management of productions income targets and ensure their achievement at all times ● Report timely and accurately to key funding partners as required ● Undertake the day-to-day management of the productions and operations.
 
Appointment Requirements:
 A relevant National Diploma in Arts or equivalent discipline (NQF6).
 A minimum of three years’ experience as an administrator (or similar) of professional theatre in South Africa.
 Excellent project management, budgeting, and organizational skills
