Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act No.17 of 2008.
The HSRC aims to attract and retain high-calibre skills and human resources necessary to effectively execute both its mandate to conduct research and to support the strategic intent of the organisation.
The HSRC is committed to accelerating the improvement in the proportion of South African Citizens who are black, female, or disabled towards achieving Equity goals.

- A doctorate (PhD) in the social or economic sciences or related disciplines;
- An established research career as evidenced by publications. For SRS/M – at least seven (7) peer reviewed publications in accredited academic journals some of which to be first / sole authored coupled with several years’ experience post PhD qualification
- Excellent writing skills necessary for publication in internationally accredited peer-reviewed academic journals, and for drafting briefing papers and reports;
- Record of raising funds for research.
- An interest in one of the priority research areas of DCES will be an advantage;
- A sound grounding in research methods, especially quantitative approaches, will be a strong recommendation;
- The versatility to apply quantitative and qualitative methodologies to challenging subject matter across disciplinary boundaries will be advantageous
- Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination and drive;
- A strong user orientation, based on a commitment to social research that makes a difference;

- Conducting high level scholarly research which meets the challenge of peer review, and has both strategic and policy relevance;
- Responding to requests for tenders and formulating grant applications;
- Managing research teams and large scale long term research projects;
- Proposal writing to secure external funds;
- Mentor fellow employees and emerging researchers;
- Deliver high-quality results and reports to meet set budgets and deadlines;
- Network with major users and funders of social science research to understand their research needs;
- Communicate research findings through modalities like policy briefs;
- Publish in refereed journals;
- Build national and international research links; and
- Manage staff and build capacity within the division.

The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) is a research division within the HSRC that employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies.
The DCES division is looking to appoint a suitably qualified professional in the position of Chief Research Specialist. This position supports and assists the Divisional Executive and the Strategic Leads in implementing the five-year strategic plan of the HSRC. The Developmental, Capable and Ethical State (DCES) division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research. The two over-arching questions that guide the research interventions are:
- How to strengthen democracy through transparent governance, accountable leadership and reinvigorated public participation/ civic engagement; and
- How to ensure sustainable development through peace, human and social security

The Equitable Education and Economies (EEE) division, at the HSRC, is looking to appoint 12 Youth Steering Committee Members for a period of 5 years to be based in any of the 12 focus countries (Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Morocco, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, or Vietnam) of a research programme commencing 1 February 2024. The project for which this appointment is to be made is called U’Good!? and aims to test and further develop relational approaches to wellbeing (RWB); and generate empirical insights into key contemporary challenges to young people’s wellbeing, and how they are addressing these. Through the adoption of a RWB framework, it embraces people-centred, collaborative, and participatory approaches to conducting research, generating insights into how the relational aspect of multiple domains may make contributions to well-being. The programme is structured into four thematic areas that act as entry points for investigations on the wellbeing of Young People: Livelihoods, Climate change, Digitalisation and Mental Health. An important component of the project advisory group is a Youth Steering Committee comprised of 12 young people representing organisations, projects, or communities of young people across the focus countries of the research call. The successful applicants will be appointed on Freelance contracts.

Key requirements:
- Must be between 18 – 30 years of age.

- Must have access to a reliable, high-quality, and stable internet.
- Must have access to remote conferencing facilities/software such as Zoom.
- Must be available to travel to attend a minimum of 3 research project conferences.
- Experience in youth and civic engagement work with a willingness to learn.
- Some exposure to multi-stakeholder and/or multi-country engagement would be an advantage.
- Documented leadership experience.
- Writing and presentation skills.
- Availability to contribute to the programme over a 5-year period as a freelancer.
- Competency in computer programmes such as Word, OneDrive, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Proactive with a problem-solving mindset, the ability to multi-task and with great attention to detail.
- Willingness to build capacity to work in a multi-cultural context and meet deadlines.

Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Document the process of doing relational research focused on young people.
- Provide comment and input reflective of the experiences of young people from your country context.
- Support the decision-making process on the Expression of Interest (EOIs) and the selection of funded projects.
- Form an important part of the Community of Practice (CoP) and guide its development and activities to remain youth focused.
- Provide guidance on priority areas and topics that are youth focused.
- Address any knowledge gaps as they might emerge through the research implementation as it pertains to collaboration and partnership building with young people; and
- Act as ambassadors for the programme internationally.
- Attend CoP events (a minimum of 3 per annum) to be offered in a hybrid (in-person and online) format.

Remuneration for this position will be based on inputs and attendance over the five-year period, as listed below:
