1. APPLICATION FOR LEARNERSHIP PROGRAMME (12 MONTHS): ACCREDITED GAME MEAT PROCESSING & PACKAGING
 
The rural based Wildlife Economy of South Africa has shown considerable growth over the years with well-established and well developed game breeding and hunting industries. However the Industry remains highly untransformed with the majority of South Africans remaining at the periphery of this important industry. The game meat industry has the potential to contribute to job creation, food security and the growing demand for alternative form of protein supply for domestic and international consumption demands. The Wildlife Economy drives rural development and prosperity through the sustainable use of wildlife assets, the socio economic benefits of ecotourism, co-managed conservation areas and related ancillary services to game farms and protected areas.
 
As part of the deliberate transformative initiative to breed and introduce the previously disadvantaged individuals into wildlife value chain, the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries seeks to recruit a cadre of young people from various rural parts of the country to participate in the 12 month learnership programme on game .meat processing and packaging.
 
 
DESCRIPTION OF THE LEARNERSHIP:
The game meat processing and packaging is a partnership initiative between the Department of Environment,
Forestry and Fisheries and Shoprite Checkers. It is a 12 months accredited training programme to be undertaken at participating Shoprite Checkers outlets across South Africa. This learnership programme comprises 70% practical and 30% theory. During the practical training, participants will be working in the meat processing section of Shoprite Checkers outlets. The working conditions would include amongst others, working in cold rooms, exposure to sharp equipments, handling of heavy carcasses and candidates may be in contact with animal blood and fat.
 
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THE ABOVE-MENTIONED PROGRAMME, PARTICIPANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING
REQUIREMENTS: Should be between 18 and maximum 35 years of age at the time of application • Should be South African citizens • Have a valid South African ID • Have a minimum metric (Grade 12) certificate at the time of application; additional qualifications with accredited institutions will be added advantage • Should be currently unemployed (No previous work experience is required) • Have no criminal record • Should be willing to operate on a full-time basis during the duration of the programme • Should be willing to venture Into the wildlife industry and preferably the game meat processing and packaging industry in the future • Preference will be given to qualifying participants residing in rural communities (including land claimants) neighbouring game farms and protected areas - previously disadvantaged individuals preferably women are encouraged to apply • Applicants should indicate their location including the province, district and local municipalities, as successful applicants will be deployed at the participating Shoprite Checkers stores in their respective provinces.
 
 
 
 
 
2. APPLICATION FOR THE SMME SUPPORT PROGRAMME (4 MONTHS): GAME MEAT PROCESSING & QUALITY STANDARDS
 
SMME TRAINING ON GAME MEAT PROCESSING
The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in partnership with Shoprite Checkers will support emerging game farmers on game meat processing and product quality assurance standards, through a programme called "from farm to fork". This will be a maximum four month training support programme with successful candidates. Through this Initiative, Shoprite Checkers as an accredited service provider will train the successful applicants who are already in the game meat industry to meet the requisite retailor food quality standards, to ensure high product value supply to customers and the market. The Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries in partnership with Shoprite Checkers will further facilitate market linkages for the trained SMMEs and jointly implement game meat promotion programmes.
 
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THE ABOVE-MENTIONED PROGRAMME, PARTICIPANTS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING
REQUIREMENTS: Should be previously disadvantage individuals • Should be South African citizens • Have a valid South African ID • Should be participating in the wildlife related business (preferably game meat industry) • Have no criminal record • Applicants should indicate their location including the province, district and local municipalities • Must have a registered business in terms of the Company Act and comply with the BBBEE Act
