JUNIOR SCIENTISTS – PALEONTOLOGY (X2)
Peromnes Grade : P09 (R 594 830.42 CTC Per Annum)
Locations : Pretoria (Head Office) and Bellville
Reporting Line : Manager: Minerals and Energy
Overall Job Purpose : The incumbent will undertake curation, auditing, database development and upkeep of the palaeontological and palynology collections at the Council for Geoscience. This includes additional support, research and development work in supporting the mandate of the Council for Geoscience, in particular, linked to palaeontological aspects.

JUNIOR SCIENTISTS – PALEONTOLOGY (X2)

Overall Job Purpose : The incumbent will undertake curation, auditing, database development and upkeep of the palaeontological and palynology collections at the Council for Geoscience. This includes additional support, research and development work in supporting the mandate of the Council for Geoscience, in particular, linked to palaeontological aspects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertake various geoscience research activities, especially focused on fundamental geoscience and minerals and energy development.
- Compile integrated reports, maps, and databases on a wide variety of geoscience research themes.
- Report, publish and present on key findings of geoscience research undertaken.
- Advise on the findings of geoscience research, including toward key policy and regulatory framework, particularly in support of mineral and energy development.
- Advice, develop, and assist in guiding the procurement of key geoscience equipment and support.
- Participate in training, development and capitalisation of key geoscience skills and knowledge.
- Undertake field reconnaissance and data gathering exercises, particularly in support of fundamental geoscience and minerals and energy themes.
- Undertake additional fundamental geoscience research in support of the Council for Geoscience’s mandate.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
- Conducts limited geoscience research.
- Capacity and ability to undertake requisite research toward scientific development.
PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION/PROJECT MANAGEMENT
- Participates in statutory and/or commercial projects under supervision.
- Writes scientific reports under guidance.
- Geoscience data collection and capturing, map compilation and geoscience data collation under the instruction and guidance of a senior scientists.
- Ability to present the results of research findings and make recommendations.
- Ability to adapt and conform to organisational standards and procedures.
STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS AND REPORTING
- Gives formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally with guidance at conferences or symposia (typically once a year).
- Publishes research findings internally and or externally based on the nature of the project cycle.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Ensures that work is conducted within the required scientific (i.e., ISO) standards.
LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT
- Undertake specific and requisite self-improvement learning/conferences and development through workshops/training courses aligned to achieving the mandate of the Council for Geoscience.
KEY PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Ability to undertake research within a dynamic and diverse team environment and capable of building interpersonal relations with clear communication.
- Able to contribute toward resolving complex analytical and logistical problems.
- Able to contribute toward the planning and organising of targeted field work and assist in project coordination.
- Able to operate with clear communication, conflict management and the capability of building professional relationships.
- Affinity toward training and development.
- Affinity toward building a knowledge and understanding of geodynamics, regional orogenic-tectono-metamorphic processes and the applications and collection of geoscience data.
- Professional and scientific writing and communication skills.
- Computer literacy and the ability to work within a geographic database environment.
- Capacity and understanding of requisite programming language will be an added benefit.
- Affinity toward gaining knowledge and understanding of sedimentology, (paleo) depositional environments, surface processes, depositional mineralising systems, geochemical, geochronological, petrographic, and paleontological themes.
- Ability to work within organisational policies and procedures.
- Have an affinity toward create, innovative thinking with a significant dedication toward quality management and control.
- Affinity toward maintaining the highest level of safety and health management.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Grade 12 and;
- BSc Honours Degree in Geology/Geochemistry/MSc or MTech Degree in Geology/Geochemistry/PhD or DTech Degree in Geology/Geochemistry
- Experience in geoscience data collection, e.g., geological mapping would be an added benefit.
- Registration with SACNASP will be an added advantage.
- Drivers licence, code 8.

JUNIOR SCIENTIST – MINERALS AND ENERGY (X1)

Overall Job Purpose : To undertake a wide variety of geoscience research focused on South Africa’s national development imperatives. The research and development will be especially focused on South Africa’s mineral and energy development sectors, largely through the collection and integration of various geoscience datasets.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertake various geoscience research activities, especially focused on fundamental geoscience and minerals and energy development.
