SENIOR SCIENTIST – MINERAL ECONOMIST (X2)
Peromnes Grade: P07 (R 909 537.03 CTC Per Annum)
Location: Head Office: Pretoria
Reporting Line: Manager: Technical Services
Overall Job Purpose: To undertake multidisciplinary research on financial,  policy and mineral economics related but not limited to, the mineral exploration activities for various commodities, exploration budgets, exploration value chain,  commodity supply as well as current and future demand trends  in South Africa.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Research and Development
  • Conducts independent advanced research in mineral economics (but not limited to) the fields of mineral exploration trends, mineral wealth and budgets, and commodity markets (e.g., supply and demand, production, and value chains) and statistical evaluation thereof.
  • In-depth analyses including quality control and quality assurance (QAQC), data processing, modelling, and data interpretation related to mineral economics and mineral exploration
  • Conducts assessment of mineral wealth and mineral expenditure in South African context
  • Conducts analysis of future commodity supply and demand, with projected future trends.
  • Compile technical reports with scientists and interns focusing on mineral economics studies.
  • Supports the implementation and tracking of an approved exploration implementation plan.
  • Contributes to the implementation of Geoscience Act Regulations.
  • Resolve complex problems in a variety of mineral economics fields, with minimal guidance or supervision.
  • Initiates, develops, and gives mineral economics input to project proposals and/or tenders for both statutory and commercial work;
  • Implements risk mitigation measures as directed by the Unit manager/project manager.
  • Lead tasks or projects and monitors project execution and budget expenditure in line with deliverables and objectives.
  • Takes measures to ensure that the project team executes mineral economics projects in line with the geoscience technical programme.
  • Recommends resources to tasks and/or projects; and
Stakeholder relations and reporting
  • Provides formal scientific or technical presentations of papers or reports, internally to other staff members and externally at conferences or symposia.
  • Publishes research findings internally and or externally based on local and global mineral economics studies.
  • Leads the compilation mineral economics data including global exploration share of South Africa amongst others.
  • Provides advice to the Executive Management, and/or public and private sector organisations related field of mineral economics studies.
  • Makes presentations at a national and/or international conferences or related work forums.
  • Editing or co-editing of a books or volume based on conference proceedings.
  • Provides scientific advice to public and private sector organisations related to mineral economics studies
  • Proficiently presents investigation findings, both in written, electronic and verbal forms.
Learning and Development
  • Supervises and provides guidance in the execution of task or projects by junior scientists
    • Provide guidance in the formulation of research proposals, methodologies, data collection and data interpretation related to mineral economics.
    • Mentors, coaches and provides supervision and guidance in research of lower level scientists with regards to mineral economics
    • Evaluates mineral economics data, results, and edit reports of junior scientists for publication.
Quality Assurance
  • Development and implementation of quality documentation, and work within the requirements of the prescribed standards (ISO 9001 quality documentation).
  • Evaluates and reviews mineral economics studies done by more junior scientific levels.
  • Mentors and supervises scientific staff at lower levels.
  • Present training courses or workshops to junior staff.
 
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • BSc (Hons) in Mineral Economics/Economic Geology with at least 8 years’ experience in the Mineral Economics/Economic Geology field. OR
  • MSc/MTech in Mineral Economics/Economic Geology with at least 5 years’ experience in the Mineral Economics/Economic Geology. OR
  • PHd/ DTech in Mineral Economics/Economic Geology) with at least 3 years’ experience in the Mineral Economics/Economic Geology.
  • Registration with SACNASP as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) (advantageous)
 
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Proven working experience in the interpretation and application of geoscientific mapping methodologies and mineral systems in mineral economics studies.
  • Proven working experience in the interpretation and application of mineral economics data and information, using relevant software’s and methodologies.
  • Practical experience in mineral economics studies and mineral exploration projects
  • In-depth knowledge of, processing, interpretation and representation of mineral economics data and/or information.
  • Competent in research using multiple data sets and conduct data analytics in the commodity market environment.
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of complex geoscientific investigations and research independently within economic geology fields.
  • Proficient in compilation and high level editing of geo-scientific reports and maps;
  • Ability to evaluate and assess mineral economics reports of interns and junior scientists.
  • Ability to compile and present mineral economics investigations at National and International level, in line with the Council for Geoscience Communication policy.
  • Ability to develop and present geoscientific project proposals.
  • Ability to mentor and coach other scientists and project team members.
  • Knowledge and experience to draft standard operating procedures (SOPs) to implement ISO certification processes within mineral economics field.
  • Experience to manage and lead assigned geoscientific projects and respective team members.

GENERAL ASSISTANT
Position Status: Permanent
Peromnes Grade: P15 (R188 539.34 CTC Per Annum)
Location: Bellville Region
Reporting Line: Facilities Manager
Overall Job Purpose: To render effective and efficient support services in terms of administrative support, first-line general building maintenance  (plumbing, electrical, etc.) furniture movement, driving services, clerical and messenger services, maintaining up-to-date and accurate registers and records for items and goods receipt/ dispatch in the Council for Geoscience.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Render routine and general administrative support services.
  • Receiving and keeping records of goods and documents received from external clients and deliver to assigned staff members.
  • Complete all the required and prescribed records with regards to the items and goods handled promptly.
  • Participate in stock-taking and control, sorting, and packaging activities of office consumables.
  • Assist in the provisioning of effective office building and infrastructure maintenance.
  • Safekeeping and movement of tools and equipment in the Council for Geoscience.
  • Responsible for the preventative maintenance program and assisting with resolving immediate maintenance and/or safety concerns.
  • Ensure all the building infrastructure is properly maintained and clean at all times.
  • Liaise with all external maintenance service providers.
  • Conduct periodic building audits.
  • Fetch and deliver mail from the post office on daily basis.
  • Collecting and distributing mail documents, parcels, and other consumables.
  • Ensure that external doors, outbuildings, and vehicles are locked at night.
  • Monitor and maintain vehicles for obvious damages, load emergency tools, unload filed equipment & samples.
  • Keep the vehicles clean and serving up-to-date.
  • Ensure that batteries are fully charged using the trickle charger.
  • Fetch and deposit funds from the bank.
  • Serves as an assistant to the geologist during fieldwork as and when required.
  • Perform ad-hoc tasks as instructed by the Regional Coordinator when deemed necessary.

EDITOR
Position Status: 
Fixed Term Contract: 24 Months
Salary: P09 (R570 690, 23 CTC Per Annum)
Location: Head Office (Pretoria)
Reporting Line: Manager: Knowledge Management
Overall Job Purpose: Linguistically edit and do the layout of manuscripts, publications and reports to ensure that they are published and released timeously such as Bulletins, Explanations, Memoirs, Corporate Publications and administrative documents. Review and quality manage internal reports and documents for submission to relevant stakeholders.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Operations
  • Linguistically edit and proofread manuscripts, reports, map legends, and figures following local and international standards.
  • Consult with authors to ensure that the original meaning of the document is retained after editing.
  • Compile, edit, proofread and oversee the printing of internal newsletter.
  • Edit and proofread internal communication and promotional material as requested.
  • Assist with linguistic queries e.g. concord, idioms, translations.
  • Edit report figures so that they are acceptable for publication and printing.
  • Create a layout of publications according to house style and/or oversee the layout of publications by an in-house graphic designer.
  • Compile specifications for printing.
  • Receive proofs for final checking and check the quality of paper, the colour of text and graphics. Authorise printer to do print run.
  • Assist to manipulate graphics so that they are acceptable for publication.
  • Once the report or manuscript has been published, circulate to the relevant recipients (author, internal bookshop, library, etc.) for records keeping.
Project Management
  • Implement project plans or work components related to editing and production of internal publications.
  • Coordinate and implement the;
  • Receipt of new draft manuscripts for publication.
  • Scheduling of the workload.
  • Manage deadlines for projects.
  • Manage the workflow of the publications.
  • Check printer proofs and printed products.
  • Manage release and dissemination of CGS publications.
  • Report on the status of publications.
Stakeholder Relations
  • Advise management of local and international linguistic standards and applicable regulations.
  • Liaise with and attend meetings with committees to produce the publication at the end of a project that incorporates all the research and findings in either report or booklet format.
  • Maintain healthy relations with various internal stakeholders.
  • May be required to interact with service providers to ensure delivery of the requirements of the CGS where needed.
  • Liaise with authors on the submission, review, and final publications of reports/manuscripts.
Quality Assurance
  • Ensure implementation of the ISO accreditation process within the work stream.
  • Ensure quality control and quality assurance of products and services and compliance with ISO, at all times.
  • Quality assures the editing of submitted documents.
  • Ensure that submissions meet the requirements in line with in-house standards (e.g. reports templates and minimum resolutions for images, etc.
  • Assess the quality of paper, the colour of text and graphics on submissions/manuscript.
 
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
  • Experience in linguistic editing.
  • Experience in manuscript layout.
  • Editing and Review experience in the geoscientific field.
  • Ability to perform proofreading (spelling and grammar), editing, and rewriting.
  • Demonstrable and proven success in developing and completing a publication concerning editing.
  • The ability to translate written literature between English and at least one South African language and one International language respectively will be an added advantage.
