SENIOR SCIENTIST: GIS AND SCIENTIFIC DATABASE MANAGEMENT
Salary: R 853 424.00 Cost to Company, per annum
Peromnes Grade: 07
Location: Head Office - Pretoria
Reporting Line: Manager - GIS and Scientific Database Management
Overall Job Purpose: Leading and conducting the continuous development, maintenance, administration and optimal operation of the corporate geoscience spatial databases.
Provides technical strategic leadership and perform technical scientific activities that result in knowledge accumulation and progress in scientific applications, systems and methodologies.
 
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and conduct continuous development, maintenance, administration and optimal operation of the corporate geoscience spatial databases
  • Contribute to the formulation and development of corporate geoscience spatial database processes and systems.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the design, development, and implementation of web-based geoscience spatial databases strategies
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the web-based geoscience spatial databases strategies
  • Diagnose spatial database problems and provide solutions
  • Develop spatial database architectures and coding standards
  • Develop standard operating procedures for spatial data quality management
  • Develop operating manuals for geoscience spatial databases work procedures for ISO certification
  • Undertake spatial data analysis on an on-going basis
  •  Validate all raw material submitted for data capture against a standard list
  • Record meta-data for all the data source material such as coordinate systems etc. (Metadata)
  • Validate and load vector data into the corporate GIS database
  • Facilitate map production process through provision of data views
  • Synchronize map production with database changes and vice versa
  • Addition of new terms and codes to the standard coding manual for data capturing
  • Assist with the integration of geoscience spatial databases
  • Initiate and develop geoscience spatial databases project proposals for both internal and external clients
  • Assist in the compilation of contract proposals and negotiations
  • Contribute actively and proactively to the initiatives and project activities in the GIS& Scientific Databases business unit
  • Present of any research-work results at conferences and seminars
  • Mentor, coach and facilitate skills transfer to junior scientists and project team members
 
KEY PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Ability to compile and present geoscience spatial databases research investigations
  • Competent in interpreting, evaluating, assessing, manipulating and the coding of metadata
  • Ability to develop and present geoscience spatial databases
  • Ability to mentor and coach scientists and technical officers within the business unit
  • Ability to implement ISO certification processes and standards

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • BSc Hons Geology or equivalent plus 8 years’ experience or
  • MSc Geology or equivalent with 4 years’ experience within the GIS environment
  • Registration with relevant Professional Body will be an added advantage
  • Advanced knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and programming will be an added advantage
  • Proven working experience in the interpretation and application of corporate geoscience spatial databases or relevant geological scientific environment
  • Practical exposure and experience in the application of Geographical Information System (GIS)
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of geology, geography, database design, GIS and programming
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of scientific methodologies and models
  • Competent in research on meta-data and data analytics in geo-scientific environment
  • In-depth knowledge of regulations and/or laws applicable to the field of expertise
  • Knowledge of the interaction/relationships between this GIS software and databases
  • High proficiency levels in working in related enterprise GIS systems
  • In-depth knowledge of GIS software and familiarity with relational database design
  • In-depth knowledge of general mapping principles, spatial analysis and remote sensing
  • High proficiency level in conducting high-level editing of geoscience spatial databases
  • Valid Driver’s Licence
