CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERS OF THE SECTION 124 PANEL TO RESOLVE DISPUTES AT THE CCMA
The Commission for Conciliation Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) is an independent Dispute Resolution statutory body established in terms of the Labour Relations Act (LRA) 66 of 1995. The CCMA’s mandate is to advance economic development, social justice, labour peace and the democratization of the workplace, amongst others. The mandate of the CCMA is further extended by other statutes dealing with employment law.
The CCMA has made a meaningful contribution towards labour market stability since its inception in 1996 and over the past five (5) years through the implementation of its legislated mandate of dispute resolution, enhancing and expanding employment security mechanisms, improving collective bargaining, intensifying dispute management and prevention (DMP) interventions and improving governance processes.
The CCMA from time to time is faced with a situations where disputes or certain parts of disputes require skills/knowledge that is not readily available in the CCMA due to the nature of the dispute. These skills set however are available in the labour market.

In terms of section 124 of the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995, the CCMA may contract any person to do the work of the CCMA. Every person with whom the Commission contracts or associates is bound by the requirement of independence that binds the Commission.
The CCMA intends establishing a panel comprised of seasoned and experienced individuals from various sectors. These individuals will be contracted to the CCMA to do specialised work of the Commission.
The CCMA therefore invites suitable qualified individuals with a minimum of 10 years and knowledge in any of the following areas:
• Labour Market Disputes;
• Unions and federations;
• Mediation (mutual interest, collective bargaining);
• Economics including Agricultural Economics, Mining, Macro and Micro Economics;
• Alternative Dispute Resolution;
• Legal including drafting; and
• Academia in the fields mentioned above.
Suitable candidates must present demonstrable ability to analyse evidence and argument; engage parties in problem solving and reality testing towards dispute resolution.
• make decisions that are legally sound and uphold the Constitution and the purpose of the Labour Relations Act
• exercise resilience and skills in dealing with conflict resolution
Qualifications
• Whilst recognition of prior learning with demonstrable ability and experience will be taken into account, at least NQF level 8 (Honours degree) will be required.
• Priority will be given to Senior Counsels, Professors, Economists, Senior Lecturers, Senior Legal Practitioners, Executives, Senior Managers and Senior Consultants in the field of Employment Relations.
Term of Contract
• Appointed individuals will be conferred the status of a senior commissioner for the purposes of resolving disputes and will have fixed term contracts of not more than 3 years.
• The utilization of members of section 124 panel shall be on ad hoc basis giving due regard to the nature of work the potential individuals may be engaged on.
Remuneration:
Appointed individuals will be remunerated at R 6 987.31 per day.
