CULTURAL OFFICER
PERMANENT POSITION
DEPARTMENT: Community Development
BRANCH: Arts, Culture and Heritage
DESIGNATION: Cultural Officer
REMUNERATION: R22 993,05 pm (basic salary, excluding benefits)
LOCATION: Johannesburg Art Gallery, cnr King George & Joubert Street
Minimum Requirements:
• Grade 12 plus a Diploma in Fine Arts/Art Administration/Public Administration/Marketing/Project Management/Development Studies (NQF level 6);
• 1 – 3 years’ relevant experience in Arts and Culture/Creative Industries/Administration/Cultural Development/Marketing and Promotions/Arts Project Management.
Primary Function:
Manage and coordinate key activities associated with the identification, conceptualization, implementation, monitoring and reporting of cultural development programmes, projects, events and cultural industries initiatives that further the City’s aims and objectives of creating economically vibrant art and cultural industry, thereby ensuring that the City becomes the cultural hub of South Africa.
Key Performance Areas:
• Provide input into the broader Arts and Culture objectives;
• Facilitate programmes by the City to Arts and Culture related CBPs/NGO’s/SMME’s and companies;
• Manage, design and implement the Arts and Culture programmes, including flagship City programmes, such as the annual Carnival, Arts Alive Festival Africa Month, Youth Month and Annual Choral Festival etc.;
• Manage the financial administration of all programmes;
• Manage and attend to the administrative recording, reporting and record-keeping requirements procedures;
• Coordinate and control tasks/activities associated with controlling volunteers and external programme partner’s performance, productivity and discipline;
• Promote participation and awareness of Arts and Culture initiatives and developmental programmes in communities;
• Travel to different community-based organisations and events for Arts and Culture programmes.
Leading Competencies:
• Written and verbal skills;
• Good communication skills;
• Computer skills;
• Networking;
• Valid driver’s license;
• Technical Arts Production skills (added advantage).
Core Competencies:
• Knowledge of Arts and Culture management and development, programme design and administration;
• Knowledge of Project Management;

• Knowledge of Arts Marketing.

CURATOR: CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIONS
PERMANENT POSITION
DEPARTMENT: Community Development
BRANCH: Arts, Culture and Heritage
DESIGNATION: Curator: Contemporary Collections
REMUNERATION: R28 456,44 pm (basic salary, excluding benefits)
LOCATION: Johannesburg Art Gallery, cnr King George & Joubert Street
Minimum Requirements:
• BA degree in Fine Arts or BA majoring in contemporary of Art;
• 3 – 5 years of experience in a similar environment with public relations and computer skills.
Primary Function:
Oversee the museum’s valuable collection of contemporary art.
Key Performance Areas:
• Manage the collection;
• Source acquisitions that reflect current artistic trends;
• Undertake research and contribute to the history of work in the collection;
• Coordinate exhibitions of work in the collection;
• Initiate exhibitions of work from external sources;
• Attend internal staff meetings;
• Contribute to the Department’s scorecard;
• Provide data for the museum’s newsletter;
• Administer processes for proposed acquisitions to be viewed by advisory committee;
• Manage correspondence related to acquisitions;
• Supervise donations of work;
• Manage requests for loans of works in the collection;
• Respond to internal and external enquiries about the collection;
• Evaluate the official collection policy;
• Represent the museum on professional committees by attending local conferences/workshops/lectures;
• Attend first aid and fire-fighting training sessions;
• Carry out stock-take and review the value of the collection.
Leading Competencies:
• Good communication skills;
• Reading and writing skills;
• Computer literacy.
Core Competencies:
• Knowledge in Administration;
• Knowledge in Fist Aid and Fire-safety;
• Knowledge in Public Relations.
