Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Qualifications and Experience

Job Description
The purpose of this position will be to provide the required financial and administrative support to the Conservation Officer on Reserve of the Marloth Nature Reserve.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial and Budget Management

Job Description
The purpose of the Ecological Coordinator position within CapeNature is to facilitate and coordinate the collection and interpretation of biodiversity related data. This contributes to informing terrestrial and marine biodiversity management planning and decision making through processes such as State of Biodiversity, Protected Area Management Plans (PAMP), the Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool (METT) and priority species monitoring in Landscape South.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage effective data, knowledge and information flow in order to produce quality data,
information and intelligence to inform and facilitate strategic adaptive management.
- Maintain and updated landscape databases for all priority projects.
- Conduct, facilitate & drive landscape monitoring.
- Quality check, verify and submit biodiversity data.
- Provide landscape feedback on tracking priority tasks.
- Develop, review and update ecological monitoring and data collection protocols.
- Provide ecological technical assistance and training.
- Manage ecological filing systems and databases.
Provide ecological decision support for effective landscape conservation and ensure sound
scientific analysis of data through coordination to guide management planning and
assessment.
- Contribute to the implementation of scientifically based monitoring programs and strategies for identified elements of biodiversity in and around landscape protected areas.

- Play a pivotal role in the PAMP process in the landscape
- Ensure that ecological matrices are compiled for all Landscape reserves and components.
- Ensure that ecological matrices are regularly reviewed for all Landscape reserves and components and assist with compilation of related reports.
- Contribute to ensure that Protected Area Annual Plan of Operations and ecological matrices are aligned through integrated planning.
- Contribute to the integration of the eco-matrix into the reserve Integrated Work Plans
- Review and contribute to relevant ecological internal policies, guidelines, manuals and operating procedures regulating the management of biodiversity.
- Contribute to the METT assessment process for protected areas.
- Incorporate METT outcomes into the eco-matrix where relevant.
Build landscape intelligence knowledge and capacity and engage stakeholders and partners
to support conservation management and ecosystem resilience through coordination and
networking
- Coordinate landscape ecological meetings in conjunction with the Landscape Conservation Intelligence unit.
- Support relevant internal and external research projects.
- Participate in scientific workshops and conferences.
- Contribute to the custodianship agreement process for priority species.
- Identify priority ecological projects that require intervention by providing infield training for priority monitoring projects in the Landscape.
- Attend and participate in relevant meetings, forums, symposiums & peer learning events.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- An appropriate tertiary qualification in ecology and/or nature conservation (NQF level 7) and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- A thorough understanding of ecological theory, ecological processes and components of biodiversity.
- Extensive experience conducting a range of fauna and flora fieldwork preferably in the Western Cape as well as the associated data processing and analysis.
- Must be able to turn data into information and document this in reports etc. to inform conservation management.
- Ability to motivate and mentor staff to ensure maximum productivity and optimal development skills.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interface with a wide range of people
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and independently.
- Physically and mentally fit and willing and able to undertake strenuous fieldwork under varying climatic and terrain conditions.
- Prepared to travel extensively and be away from home for periods of time.
- Must have a valid driver’s license, be competent driving long distances and 4x4 vehicles.
- Proficiency in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape and high competency in English writing.

Job Description
As the Risk & Performance Specialist, the successful candidate will form part of the Risk & Performance Unit. Your role will focus on facilitating and co-ordinating annual planning, performance monitoring and reporting and enhancing governance and business processes. This is a support role to the Team Leader: Risk and Performance and will be key to ensure Senior Management, Executive Management, the Board and key stakeholders are supported and provided with the necessary guidance to facilitate annual planning and provided with complete and accurate performance information for decision-making purposes. You will be required to travel and to interact with all directorates, components and landscapes within the entity.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
STRATEGIC AND ANNUAL PLANNING
- Assist the Team Leader: Risk and Performance with the production and development of all corporate documents, including, but not limited to, the strategic, annual performance and operational plans and annual report.
- Ensure the strategic, annual performance and operational plans and annual report (draft and design versions) are based on the guidance and templates provided.
- Ensure the strategic, annual performance and operational plans and annual report comply with the technical requirements of the relevant guidance documents and frameworks.
- Advise Management of the requirements and measures contained in the Medium-Term Strategic Framework and Sector specific plans and align the strategic and annual performance plans accordingly.
- Assist in the development of outcomes, outputs and indicators and ensure they comply with the technical requirements of the relevant guidance documents and frameworks.
- Review all information contained in the strategic, annual performance and operational plans and annual report and follow up on areas requiring clarity or further information.
- Communicate and liaise with relevant Managers/ staff on the development and production process.
- Update draft documents based on technical reviews received and provide formal communication in this regard.
- Assist in the production of the printed version and liaise with staff and/ or service providers to produce the print ready documents, including the delivery of printed copies to relevant stakeholders.
PERFORMANCE MONITORING AND REPORTING
- Assist the Team Leader: Risk and Performance with the collation, verification and reporting of performance information across the entity.
- Assist the Team Leader: Risk and Performance with the collation, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and auditing (internal and external) of performance information.
- Assess and verify performance information and related evidence for accuracy, completeness and alignment with technical indicator descriptions in the Annual Performance Plan (APP).
- Prepare and maintain accurate and complete monthly, quarterly and annual dashboards for presentation and reporting to Management and Landscapes.
- Disseminate performance information to the relevant Management and staff and follow up on any queries.
- Provide training and support to relevant officials on all performance reporting related matters.
- Capture and review all performance information of the entity on the Provincial performance management system (eQPRS).
- Assist in providing audit related information timeously and assist in responding to queries and requests, including liaising with relevant staff and Management to facilitate responses to queries and requests.
- Provide administrative and technical support as it relates to planning and performance monitoring and reporting.
BUSINESS PROCESS IMPROVEMENT
- Assess relevant processes and procedures as it relates to entity planning, performance and reporting and advise on gaps and areas of improvement.
- Assess the implementation of processes and advise on non-compliance.
GOVERNANCE AND COMPLIANCE
- Assist in the achievement of and follow up of relevant management actions documented in Auditor-General, Internal Audit and other relevant performance/ compliance reports.
- Assist in the drafting of responses for audit related findings.
- Assist in the development and drafting of performance management policies and procedures.
REQUIREMENTS:
- An appropriate tertiary qualification – NQF level 7 (B-Degree or higher in Public Management/ Administration or Commerce or similar). Completed SAICA/SAIPA Articles would be an advantage.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience.
