Job Description
CapeNature seeks to employ a qualified, experienced, and motivated individual, an opportunity to co-ordinate our tourism offering at the World Heritage Site - Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, with its bouquet of wooden cabin cottages, glamping and camping sites, eco venues and various day activities.
The successful individual will be based at Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve, located near Heidelberg. On-site accommodation will be available on the reserve, at a subsidized rate.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
KPA 1 – Implementation of Tourism Operational Systems
Work with various teams to implement operational systems which drive a consistently high level of service excellence across all aspects of eco-tourism operations and the guest experience.
 
KPA 2 – Coordination of key Tourism programs
On-the-Ground assistance to coordinate the deliverables of key improvement and repair projects, regular maintenance and drive the support required in Product Development, all of which is underpinned by elements of innovation and green technology solutions.
 
KPA 3 – Internal & External stakeholder relationship
Maintain key relationships with internal and external stakeholders which contributes to the delivery of the overall strategic plans of the department, and to ensure that the reserves tourism product is top of mind.
 
KPA 4 – Team motivation

Support, motivate and coordinate the services of a high performing internal team and contractors (where relevant) to deliver successfully on the strategic operational plans.
 
KPA 5 – Service excellence standards
Maintain the relationship, contract and ensuring service excellence standards offered by concessionaire partnerships and external contractors. In addition, input into identifying and researching new opportunities to grow the experience offering and facilities at reserve level.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
  • A formal Tourism / Hospitality / Business related qualification with at least (3) three years’ appropriate tourism/hospitality industry experience.
  • A valid Code B drivers’ license.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Packages.
  • Excellent communication, project coordination, time & budget management, and customer relations skills.
  • Language proficiency in two (2) of the three (3) official languages of the Western Cape.
  • No Criminal record
 
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • Experience in an eco-tourism environment is advantageous;
  • Demonstrate experience managing accommodation/eco-tourism facilities;
  • Background knowledge of nature-based tourism and conservation
  • Working knowledge of the RoomSeeker reservations system will be an advantage, but not a key requirement.

Job Description
This position is suited to a dedicated conservationist who would like to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of biodiversity through protected area management, protected area expansion, compliance and law enforcement, support for eco-tourism and access, environmental learning and stakeholder relations within the Boland Landscape Unit, specifically responsible for Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve.
The successful candidate will report to the Landscape Unit Manager, Boland Landscape Unit (Central Landscape).
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Enhance biodiversity resilience through targeted ecosystem conservation and restoration initiatives
  • Targeted conservation and restoration initiatives and interventions informed by knowledge and management best practice are implemented.
  • Protected Area is managed according to a management plan and prioritized action plans.
  • Priority landscapes are protected, restored and conserved.
  • Conservation operations are optimized through planned METT actions and interventions.
  • Priority ecological infrastructure areas are restored and protected.
 
Lead landscape conservation and stewardship in ways that address biodiversity loss.
  • Biodiversity legal mandate is implemented through compliance and enforcement actions.
  • Protected area expansion planning priorities and associated conservation intelligence are implemented.
  • Actions to improve the conservation status of priority species and ecosystems are implemented.
  • Functional partnerships addressing biodiversity loss are developed and maintained.
  • Landscape ecological and human well-being is promoted through a landscape environmental interpretation and awareness plan.
 
Promote the biodiversity economy, and enhance biodiversity access and sustainable use
  • Job opportunities are created through the implementation of Natural Resource Management programmes.
  • Contractor development and work opportunities are enhanced through environmental programmes implemented (Integrated Catchment Management, Expanded Public Works Programme).
  • Sustainable harvesting of natural products is facilitated.

Advocate for behavioural change and promote voluntary compliance
  • Local community involvement in Protected Area management is established.

  • All relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies and standards are in place and adhered to.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation / equivalent qualification at NQF 6 in a Nature Conservation/Conservation Science field.
  • Five years’ management experience in the Conservation Sector.
  • Incident Command Training (ICS 100, ICS 200).
  • Thorough working knowledge of MS Office and GIS.
  • A valid EB (08) driver’s license, willingness to travel regularly and ability to drive on 4x4 terrain.
  • A good track record of managing a protected area and sound interpersonal, communication and people management skills.
  • Experience in finance management.
  • Bilingualism in at least 2 of the official languages of the Western Cape.
  • No criminal record.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties in rugged mountainous terrain.
 
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  •  Post-graduate Degree in Nature Conservation/Conservation Science, Natural Sciences and/or Sustainable Development will be advantageous.
  • Project Management experience in landscape conservation, world heritage site management, disaster management and/or landscape partnerships will be advantageous.
  • IC Type 5 Single Resource / Fire Boss Level 1 or Position Specific ICS Training

Job Description
CapeNature Conservation seeks to appoint a dynamic person to assist with administration, tourism management, and infrastructure maintenance at the Goukamma Nature Reserve.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with conservation management field tasks
  • Maintenance of road and hiking trails
  • Erecting and maintaining fences
  • Making and maintaining fire breaks
  • Combat erosion and perform rehabilitation work
  • Control of alien vegetation
  • Pre-fire season audit
 
Maintenance of reserve and tourism infrastructure and equipment.
  • Assist with basic servicing and maintenance of all buildings, stores and equipment including cleaning
  • Provide a friendly and efficient customer service

Job Description
This position is suited to a dedicated conservationist who seeks to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of biodiversity through protected area expansion and biodiversity stewardship and extension services as part of the Lesley Hill Succulent Karoo Trust Stewardship Project by providing conservation services and stewardship extension support in the Karoo Landscape Unit in Landscape East.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Completion of Stewardship Processes:
  • To provide information to key landowners and managers in respect of relevant conservation stewardship options and facilitate and provide support for the negotiations and development of subsequent stewardship agreements in order to secure priority Succulent Karoo habitats.
  • Consolidate negotiations for stewardship agreements
  • The compilation of Management Plans for stewardship sites
  • Participate in the Private Nature Reserve Regularization
  • Support Landscape Operation with the evaluation of identified conservation areas as Other Effective Area Based Conservation Measures (OECMs)
 
 Maintain Stewardship sites
  • Preparation and compilation of stewardship site assessments for potential stewardship sites.
  • Attend and participate in the stewardship site review process.
  • Identify and implement appropriate technical assistance projects for landowners in recognition of stewardship agreements.
  • Carry out audits for stewardship sites & compile annual APO’s.
 
Provide Extension Support & Resource Tools
  • Attend and participate in relevant Conservation Management and Stewardship meetings, Forums, Symposiums & Peer Learning Workshops and Knowledge Exchanges.
  • Attend meetings with partners & stakeholders
  • Implement awareness interventions through presentations at landowner groupings
  • Capacity building and technical advice through extension support
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of resources tools to equip stewardship site owners and managers
  • Liaise with other extension officers from NGO’s and Departments in the landscape and combine efforts or adapt existing resource material or develop new material
 
Monitoring, control and compliance
  • Ensure compliance with relevant policies and legislation.
  • Report writing, finance and asset management.
  • Manage information systems and relevant databases.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A formal three-year qualification in the field of Natural Resource Management or Biodiversity Conservation.
  • At least two years’ appropriate experience.
  • A valid 08 driver’s license and a willingness to travel extensively in the Landscape
  • Advanced computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Power Point and GIS).
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in at least two of the official languages spoken in the rural areas of the Western Cape.
  • Sound report writing and presentation skills
