Job Description
CapeNature seek to appoint a dynamic person to assist with ecological data collection, monitoring, infrastructure maintenance, law enforcement, FTE supervision and tourism management at Grootvadersboscsh Nature Reserve Complex.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ensure effective ecological management
  • Ecological (Biotic, abiotic, cultural-historical, weather, etc.) data collection and capturing and management according to standardised process and Eco-Matrix.
  • Carry out quality control duties (NRM and ICM)
  • Assist with research projects
 
Assist with conservation management field tasks
  • Assist with overseeing field team’s activities in line with the Annual Plan of Operations
  • Perform fire suppression activities when required
  • Maintain and operate firefighting equipment
  • Assist with ad hoc alien clearing, road maintenance, hiking trail tasks as required.
 
Perform Legal Compliance Quality Assurance and OHS
  • Carry out patrols, observations and law enforcement (on and off reserves)
  • Assist with roadblocks and off reserve inspections as required
  • Assist with risk assessments and quality assurance audits, including OHS
  • Act as Environmental Control Officer
  • Assist with search and rescue operations Maintain vehicles and equipment
  • Transport of staff/equipment
 
Client Care
  • Assist with Tourism activities and standby
  • Provide visitors with information and interpretation
  • Assist with the implementation of the reserve’s Environmental Education, Awareness and Interpretation activities
 
Administration and Reporting duties
  • Complete all relevant documentation, e.g, leave, overtime and standby, timeously
  • Complete log sheets, claim forms, asset management, etc...

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications and Experience
  • Grade 12
  • At least two years of job-related experience
  • A valid code B driver’s license with 4x4 driving skills and experience
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, QGIS)
  • Knowledge and experience in ecological monitoring and law enforcement
  • Knowledge and experience in Fire Fighting
  • ICS 100 certification
  • No criminal record

Job Description
CapeNature seek to appoint a professional, competent, innovative, and energetic candidate to lead Biodiversity Data Management in CapeNature.  The ideal candidate should have well developed interpersonal, communication and writing skills coupled with a high level of professionalism. The Team Leader:  Biodiversity Data Management is responsible for the generation of knowledge and systems for the assessment of and reporting on biodiversity, the implementation of Strategic Adaptive Management Models through the development of plans, systems, and strategies for the conservation of biodiversity in the Western Cape.  The Team Leader:  Biodiversity Data Management will lead and manage a team of GIS & Data specialists and technicians; facilitate strategic and work planning; report through strategic, functional, human resources, financial and assets management functions and will report to the Capability Manager:  Biodiversity Intelligence in the Biodiversity Capabilities Directorate of CapeNature.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Lead and manage and enable the development and integration of knowledge, planning and monitoring systems.
  2. Manage contributions to the five-yearly Western Cape Biodiversity Spatial Plan.
  3. Manage contributions to the five-yearly Western Cape Protected Areas Expansion Strategy and implementation of the strategy.
  4. Manage contributions to the five-yearly Western Cape State of Biodiversity Report and an annual Western Cape State of Conservation Report.
  5. Manage contributions to the five-yearly Catchment to Coast Strategy.
  6. Manage contributions to development and implementation of Biodiversity Management, Conservation Action and Protected Area Management Plans.
 
  1. Lead and manage, develop, and integrate legislation, policies, strategies and systems.
  2. Manage contributions to CITES non-detriment findings adopted by the Scientific Authority.
  3. Manage contributions to Western Cape Biodiversity legislation, strategies, and policies.
  4. Lead development of workflows to facilitate effective compliance and enforcement.

  2. Lead the development and implementation of appropriate conservation data management and reporting systems

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Qualifications and Experience
  • A four-year qualification (NQF 8) or higher in Natural Sciences.
  • At least 3 years’ management experience in the biodiversity/conservation sector.
  • Sound understanding and knowledge of applicable legislation and ability to interpret and implement.
  • Demonstrated project leadership and management. Include summary of lead/managed projects in application.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the biodiversity of the Western Cape, and the primary threats to biodiversity in the Western Cape.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of spatial and non-spatial data, databases and Geographic Information systems.
  • Excellent communication in English both written and spoken.
  • In possession of a valid driver’s license.

Job Description
This position is suited to a dedicated conservationist who would like to contribute meaningfully to the conservation of biodiversity through Estuary management, law enforcement, environmental awareness, and stakeholder relations within the Marine and Coast Operations component to be based at the Breede Estuary.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
KRA 1: To enhance biodiversity resilience through targeted ecosystem conservation and restoration initiatives.
  • This includes planning, implementation, and monitoring of conservation and restoration efforts to protect and conserve a functioning estuary and the associated species with specific reference to the Breede Estuary;
  • Participate in any disaster management responses at a local level.
  • Development and implementation of estuary related planning systems and tools;

KRA 2: Contribute and support marine and coastal conservation in ways that address biodiversity loss.
  • The Breede Estuary ecosystem and key indicator species are prioritized, thereby contributing to their conservation
  • Participate where both Conservation Operations and Biodiversity Capabilities components implement solution-based conservation-orientated interventions at Breede Estuary.
  • Ensure that applied research (internal and external) related to the Breede Estuary is mainstreamed to influence local, regional and Marine and Coasts planning and decision-making processes. 

KRA 3: To assist in risk management, governance, compliance monitoring, and effective enforcement operations in the region.
  • Be aware of and participate in interventions that predict, minimize, and mitigate risks due to unnatural and natural disasters.
  • Ensuring that enforcement operations are effective in achieving the objectives of the estuary management plan and  associated legislation, policies, agreements;
  • Participation in estuary based partnerships, especially with regards to law enforcement and compliance monitoring.
  • Advocate for behavioral change and promote voluntary compliance.
  • Identify and motivate for innovation and improved technologies

KRA 4: Contribute to marine and coastal conservation in promoting the biodiversity economy and enhancing biodiversity access and sustainable use.
  • This includes participating in local partnerships with a focus on conservation as well as any associated non-extractive socio-economic benefits and community empowerment opportunities
  • Identify and participate in projects that are based on sustainable non-extractive economic opportunities, aligned to the entity’s directive to enhance access and socio-economic opportunities.
  • Support for the implementation of targeted biodiversity economic activities to promote job creation, work opportunities, and livelihood support in and around the Breede Estuary
  • Participate in initiatives that promote access to the estuary for recreational, educational, and traditional purposes (ecotourism offering and access to communities).
  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement and learning at the Breede Estuary;

KRA 5: Contribute and assist to advance knowledge exchanges, peer learning, capacity building, and mentorship.
  • Participate in the Marine and Coasts Operations coaching, mentorship, and capacity building programmes
  • Participate in research, development, and implementation of innovative technologies or decision-support tools at the Breede Estuary.
  • Facilitating knowledge exchanges and peer learning opportunities at the Breede Estuary
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Grade 12 certificate
  • At least 5 years of job-related experience with an emphasis on estuary, coastal or marine fields
  • Working knowledge of enforcement operations, the Integrated Coastal Management Act and the Marine Living Resources Act.
  • A valid EB driver’s license
  • 15-Nautical Mile Skipper license with at least 3 years of proven experience
  • Bilingualism in two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.
  • No criminal record.
 
RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • A relevant Tertiary Diploma in Conservation Management
  • Peace Officer qualification.
  • Appointed Fisheries Control Officer
  • Marine Radio operator qualification
