EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: CONSERVATION OPERATIONS: EAST
5 Year contract position, renewable, Head Office, Cape Town
Salary R 1 005 063 per annum (TCoE) - Level 13
 
CapeNature has been constituted in terms of the Western Cape Nature Conservation Board Act of 1998 and operates within a framework of good governance and regulatory compliance, driven by clear strategies and a strong focus on people performance. To further enhance and strengthen its position as a world leader in biodiversity conservation, the above key position is available within our executive leadership team.
 
Purpose of Position: To provide strategic leadership to regional ecosystems in such a manner as to promote biodiversity resilience, sustainable land use and establish beneficial access to Protected Areas for local communities.
 

Key Responsibilities: • Lead the Conservation Operations Directorate in executing its legal and institutional mandate • Lead the Operations — East Team to develop and execute appropriate ecosystem biodiversity and conservation strategies • Optimise the achievement of desired conservation, biodiversity, access, ecotourism and related outcomes • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of transversal initiatives and ensure improved ecosystem health, services, and ecological infrastructure • Position CapeNature to fulfil a leadership role in relevant biodiversity programmes, projects, policies, processes and initiatives • Communicate, engage and collaborate with key strategic stakeholders on an on-going basis • Assume accountability for the performance, governance and risk management of the Directorate and its related landscapes • Build the required Conservation Operations capabilities, skills and competencies • Develop and provide the necessary oversight over the implementation of applicable policies and systems.

 
Key Requirements: • An MSc or equivalent higher qualification in the Natural Sciences • A sound understanding and knowledge of applicable environmental and related legislation / regulations and a demonstrable ability to interpret and apply • Experience in the use of automated workflows and conservation management information systems • 10 years' experience in the conservation sector at a senior level, including on-and-off reserve management • Additional qualifications in project management, financial management, and / or business management qualification would be an advantage • In-depth knowledge of the functioning of ecological processes and conservation management • A valid EB (08) driver's license and willingness to regularly travel extensively throughout the Western Cape Province and elsewhere as required.
 
Personal attributes:• A mature, stable person with strong strategic leadership, conceptual and analytical skills • Ability to develop a strategic vision and to motivate, empower and inspire others to execute • A demonstrated ability to lead a successful team and to be a member of an executive leadership team • Exceptional communicator, including strong advocacy, engagement, interpersonal, planning, people management and conflict resolution skills • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
 
You will be appointed as Executive Director: Conservation Operations East, reporting to the CEO. This will be a five year contract appointment subject to a 12 month probation period and the conclusion of an annual renewable Performance Agreement.
 
The appointment will be in line with the Employment Equity Plan of CapeNature. Qualifications and experience will determine the total cost of the remuneration package. You will be required to disclose all of your financial interests.
