PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To assist skilled Chief Handyman/Artisan/Supervisor or Section Manager with a variety of maintenance and activities to ensure that facilities, vehicles, machines, tools and materials are ready for use in order to meet the division objectives.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
- Assist a qualified artisan with the installation and maintenance of equipment such as domestic, industrial appliances and machinery or vehicle.
- Tasked to do any other basic function when required within general scope of the role and functions of the section.
- Perform all general cleaning of workshop, mess, and ablution and office areas by routinely sweeping, mopping and polishing areas and furniture.
- Removal of all waste.
- Performing yard cleaning of work areas by pulling out weeds and cutting grass, picking up litter.
- Assisting artisans/supervisors with building maintenance such as roof, gutter and window cleaning.
- Perform general maintenance of facilities such as paint work as guided and instructed by a superior.
- Scaling, stripping, painting of equipment as instructed.
- Provide good housekeeping in the workshops, stores and facilities.
- Transport variety of tools, equipment and supplies safely to the job site to enable work to progress efficiently.
- Cleaning equipment as guided and directed.
- Utilise safely basic hand and power tools whilst assisting workers and performing DIY facility maintenance.
- Collect and return items from the various holding depots/workshops within the Dockyard.
- Maintain neat work places and that tools and equipment are secured at the end of each shift.
- Monitor consumable item stock levels and informing administrator/Supervisors of requirements.
- Provide transport and lifting capability support by driving a fork lift and cherry picker.
- Adherence to Occupational Health and Safety codes and regulations.
- Spot clean all finger and other marks from light switches, power points, fridges, microwaves, doors and walls.
- Empty, clean and replace all used waste paper baskets, bins and ashtrays at least twice a day.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Grade 12
- Forklift and Cherry picker licence an added advantage
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 1 year experience in an industrial or similar environment.
SPECIAL PROFICIENCY/SKILLS
- Knowledge of general hand and power tools.
- 5S Cleaning standards
- Must be willing to work overtime
- Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations
- Ability to work at heights, able to work in very confined and awkward spaces
- Ability to function as part of a team
- Ability to recognise dangerous situations in the workplace

EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years technical experience of patternmaking in the foundry environment

- Ability to do ornamental carving.
- Ability to use read and interpret drawings.
- Ability to operate variety of machines like band saw, milling machine, lathe, circular saw and pantograph.

- Have strong numerical skills.

ANALYTICAL CHEMIST

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To provide an effective chemical service to the SA Navy vessels and shore establishments regarding tribology and lubrication engineering, water quality analysis, coolant analysis, polymers identification as well as gas free engineering certification to all ships and submarines.
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Assist with identifying gaps and developing appropriate interventions for the Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) to function as required.
- Participating in monitoring and evaluating program performance to conform to safety and quality requirements.
- Perform scientific functions that require interpretation in the absence of an established framework.
- Provide consultation to the SA Navy, Armscor Dockyard, External Contractors and other Arms of Service with regards to Gas Free Engineering Certification, Condition Based Monitoring, Chemical analysis, Analytical Procedures and identification of materials.
- Certify confined and/or other spaces on-board Naval vessels, shore units and visiting ships free from toxic gasses according to Naval Ordinance4/2/1993 (E) of 22 June 1993 and in terms of the appropriate Occupational Health and Safety Acts.
- Liaise with technical personnel and other organizations on matters of tribology.
- Consult with Section Manager in the procurement of chemicals, consumables and analytical instrumentation needed by the Condition Based Maintenance Section.
- Analyse organic and inorganic matter and compile reports according to quality requirements.
- Carry out all adhoc requirements required by the laboratory areas, the Chemistry Manager and the Divisional Manager timeously, efficiently and with the required accuracy and effectiveness.
- Undertake all coating failure investigations both in the field and in the laboratory to provide current and future solutions.
- Perform all activities with due consideration to biological, mechanical and chemical safety requirements.
- Manage safe storage of all hazardous chemicals inside the laboratories and Chemical Store.
- Be responsible for the administration of incoming and out-going samples and sample request sheets.
- Assist with reviews of written Procedures, Work Instructions and Laboratory Accreditation related to the Chemistry Section.
- Ensure Continuous professional development by doing research/literature self-study on engineering technologies and attend work related and accredited courses to improve expertise.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry
- Registration with SACNASP or relevant body will be an added advantage.
EXPERIENCE:
- Three (3) years post qualification experience in a Chemistry environment.
