SENIOR TECHNICAL OFFICER: WEAPONS (SENIOR WEAPON SAFETYOFFICER)

Research and Development Business Unit has a vacancy for a Senior Technical Officer: Weapons (Senior Weapon Safety Officer) at Alkantpanin Northern Cape. Applications are invited from people who meet the qualification and experience requirements below:
 
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To ensure provision of a serviceable weapon system for testing and responsible for the execution of weapon operation.
 
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS:
  • To ensure that the MOU and six monthly inspection is prepared according to client requirements. 
  • To ensure that the foreign client weapon systems is prepared for tests. 
  • Assist the weapon technician with first and second line repair tasks. 
  • Safe operation of infantry, artillery and armour weapon systems according to Alkantpan procedures and client’s Standard Operating Procedures. 
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks according to procedures. 
  • To ensure safety and security of all weapons. 
  • The preparation, release and operation of weapons according to test requirement. 
  • Supervise the test team (technical officers) during the preparation, operation and after fire routine/mop-up of weapons and targets. 
  • Act as mentor for junior personnel (technical officers and assistants). 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Grade 12 – Technical
  • Driver’s license – Code C1
  • National Technical Certificate (at least NTC6)
 
EXPERIENCE:
  • 4 – 5 years’ experience in weapon systems
 
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of the management systems (e.g. SHE, Quality, etc.)
  • Knowledge of weapons (infantry and/or armour, and/or artillery)
  • Maps and Navigation

SCIENTIST: OCEANOGRAPHY

Research and Development Business Unit has a vacancy for a Scientist: Oceanography at Institute for Maritime Technology (IMT) in Simon’s Town, Western Cape. Applications are invited from people who meet the qualification and experience requirements below:
 
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The role of the Senior Scientist is to independently lead medium complex projects to provide expert systems and technology support to the SA Navy and other clients.
 
CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREAS:
  • To design and develop computer models in order to simulate and to interpret results and to perform scientific verification. 
  • Undertake research and make recommendations in area of responsibility. 
  • To provide hardware / software design tasks of a medium complex nature. 
  • To lead project teams consisting of multiple specialists and support personnel. 
  • To identify opportunities for project management process improvement. 
  • To define, investigate and analyse medium complex scientific problems, and develop solutions to the identified problems. 
  • To write scientific reports specifying raw data as well as interpretation of results with recommendations to be used for critical decision-making. 
  • Be responsible for making medium complex scientific decisions as part of scientific activities.
  • Comprehend and apply knowledge of the widely applied principles underpinning good scientific practice and specialist knowledge. 
  • Provide consultancy advice to internal and external stakeholders on scientific activities. 
  • To share expertise with team members with less experience based on area of specialization. 
  • Communicate and network with client in support of IMT objectives. 
  • To undertake professional development activities, sufficient to maintain and extend competence in specified areas. 
  • To network with industry, academia, etc. to be aware of the latest available technology in area of expertise. 
  • To enhance client relationship to ensure continuation of business. 
  • Responsible for appropriate allocated ad hoc tasks (e.g. organisational, technical, sea going, diving, SHEQ, etc.) 
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.Sc. Hons Degree in applicable Science
 
TECHNICAL / LEGAL CERTIFICATE / PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION
  • SACNASP registration – desirable.
 
EXPERIENCE:
  • 7-9 years’ experience.
  • Experience in applicable Science.
  • Experience in a military environment will be an advantage.
 
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
  • In depth knowledge of modelling and simulation software, algorithms and solution procedures
  • Must be able to find and implement new solutions in modelling and simulation
  • In depth user programming e.g. (VBasic, C, C++, Matlab, Python) 
  • Extensive engineering design knowledge required 
  • Military scientific knowledge
  • Working knowledge of occupational health and safety and relevant statutory regulations
