The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research campuses and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Grain Crops (ARC– GC) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Potchefstroom:
SENIOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: CROP PROTECTION (PATHOLOGY)
Key Performance Areas:
Together with Chief Technician and/or Project Manager, co-ordinates and contributes towards projects, by compiling and executing technical project activity plans.
Identifies the need for human resources in project(s) (where applicable with the Chief Technician and/or Project Manager) and manages the allocated resources.
Assists with compiling and managing project budgets.
Plans and co-ordinates own and technical project work activities.
Manages project facilities, material and equipment. Ensures optimal utilisation of resources.
Independently conducts specialist research/technical support, diagnostics, and other services within a project.
Collects, captures, processes and interprets technical data and makes internal project recommendations.
Compiles detailed technical reports and submitted for approval.
Manages and ensures compliance to quality standards.
Presents results to stakeholders (advises/trains).
Optimises and implements equipment and/or processes and/or systems.
Recommends new technologies to optimise research.
Renders diagnostic, technical, and other services at a national level.
Aware of Intellectual Property opportunities.
Assists researchers with identifying new business opportunities.
Develops technical capacity at an appropriate level.
Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities.
Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures.
Meet peer norm requirements for specific field of expertise, by recognising authorship or contribution.
Requirements:
M.Tech Degree, with 2 years’ applicable experience Or Hon’s degree, B Degree, B. Tech, with 6 years applicable experience Or National Diploma (3 years) with 8 years’ applicable experience.
Registration with relevant scientific registration body.
Knowledge of diseases will be an added advantage.
Knowledge of experimental design, laboratory procedures, isolation techniques, operation of basic laboratory equipment, PCR and HPLC. Will be an added advantage.
Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures.
Knowledge of finance systems such as AX will be an added advantage.
Proficiency with MS Office suite.
Valid EC drivers’ licence.

Manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation.
Compiles and manages project budgets.
Plans and co-ordinates technical projects.
Manages project facilities, material, and equipment.
Optimal utilization of resources. Strategic planning of future resources. Independently conducts specialist research/technical support, diagnostics, and other services across projects.
Manages and ensures compliance to quality standards.
Renders expert diagnostic, technical and other services and consults at a national/international level.
Exploits intellectual property developments and assists in its development.
Identifies and pursues new business opportunities.

Requirements:
PhD in Agronomy with experience in conservation agriculture Or MSc with 5 year’s work experience and extensive publications standing as a researcher must be on a national level.
Strong research record.
Capability for project and programme management.
Partnership development collaboration.
Performance and Financial management skills.
Individual leadership and good negotiation skills.
Experience in the management of personnel.
Valid driver’s license.
