AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Plant Health and Protection seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at the Roodeplaat campus, Pretoria:
FACILITIES SUPERVISOR (GLASSHOUSES, GREENHOUSES, QUARANTINE FACILITIES)
Salary (R191 510-R287 264 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Maintenance of the PHP Roodeplaat Quarantine facility, glasshouses, tunnel and propagation rooms— Record-keeping, booking and use of facilities in trials and experiments; monitoring of temperatures, lighting and humidity; update signage of all rooms; manage maintenance and servicing of cooling units, air conditioning, plumbing, electricity and other equipment and infrastructure; procurement, and inspections after service/maintenance,
Project management & coordination — Assist with identification of CAPEX needs, procurement, and inspections after service/maintenance; input into budget for maintenance plan of campus; manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation; risk management and mitigation; progress reporting,
Research support — Supervision of the safe removal of used plant material and incineration; compile and discuss work plans and progress reports with line manager and RTMs; manages and ensures compliance to quality standards,
Health and safety— Compliance with general health and safety regulations; demonstrate safe use of safety equipment, safe application of surface sterilizers, sanitizers and pesticides,
General — Ability to work under pressure and handling of high work load at times; must be willing to work overtime when necessary.
Requirements:
National Diploma in Facilities Management or related qualification
Three years’ work experience
Proficiency in MS Office suite
Excellent communication Skills (Written and Verbal)
Proven ability to work in diverse teams
Ability to be hands-on and excellent problem solving skills
Ability to organize, multi-task, prioritize and work systematically
Prior experience of glasshouse and tunnel facilities supervision and maintenance,
Demonstrate good understanding of the job requirements
Driver’s license

The ARC- Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC– VIMP) and Plants Health Protection (ARC - PHP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following positions at Roodeplaat, Pretoria. Responsible for Roodeplaat, Rustenburg & Loskop Facilities.
FACILITIES MANAGER
Salary (R708 556 – R 1 062 835 p.a) all-inclusive remuneration package
Key Performance Areas:
Undertake effective asset management through the alignment of policies to ensure optimal utilisation, longevity, security, and safety of assets,
Develop and implement procedures as well as the guidelines relevant to Property management to achieve organisational excellence,
Perform farm management and allocate facilities through efficient and equitable management of land, offices, laboratories, associated labour and specialised field resources staff,
Effectively manage the budget in line with the PFMA,
Identify redundant and strategic facilities/assets towards optimal commercialisation and alternative gainful repurposing. Ensure compliance with the requirements of Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant/applicable regulations ensuring that a culture of safety is engendered throughout the Institute,
Develop and apply efficient asset maintenance management system,
Manage our fleet and all aspects related to transport for the Institute (including other locally based ARC fleet when required),
Plan, budget and manage maintenance and capital works such as laboratories, offices and houses and letting of non-core facilities and agricultural land,
Supply services for the removal of waste,
Ensure maintenance of heavy machinery, farm equipment and other equipment such as air conditioners, graders, tractors and front-end diggers,
Plan, direct and coordinate activities specific to facility projects requirements and ensure that goals/objectives are accomplished within time frames and funding parameters,
Manage staff and ensure the security of employees and ARC properties.
Requirements:
A Degree in Facility Management or related profession, e. g, building, engineering, infrastructure environment,
A postgraduate qualification will be an advantage,
Experience and exposure to agricultural research facilities (such as research farms and laboratories) of a medium-large facility,
5 years’ experience in management position’s preferably in a research environment,
Excellent interpersonal skills,
A proven track record of supervising staff at all levels,
Proficiency in MS Office suite,
Good communication skills, written & verbal (proficiency in at least two local languages will be an advantage),
Valid SA driver’s license.
