The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC–OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria. 
 
RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: VETERINARY 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Organizing and preparing samples. 
 Receives instruction in and performs serological, immunological and molecular assays for the detection and identification of viral agents of diseases using well-defined procedures. 
 Assists in the preparation culture media and reagents. 
 Recording results in the appropriate results books and Labware system. 
 Keeps records and makes reports on assignments received. 
 Assisting in the improvement and development of new test methods in collaboration with the Head of Laboratory. 
 Providing research support by giving project input regarding technical detail and carrying out assigned technical tasks. 
 Assisting in the technical and administrative work necessary for the implementation, maintaining and improving the quality management system. 
 
Requirements: 
 National Diploma/B-Tech: Veterinary Technology 
 Registration with SAVC is mandatory. 
 At least 1year working experience in an accredited microbiology/serology laboratory will be an added advantage. 
 A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Preparation of agarose gels and electrophoresis buffers. Cleaning of labs, defrosting of freezers, removal of waste, autoclaving and transferal of waste to incinerator. Recording temperatures of fridges and freezers. 
 Packing of pipette tips. Retrieving and transferal of samples to other departments. 
 
Requirements:
 Matric Certificate. 
 Experience of working in a laboratory environment. 
 Good verbal and written communication skills.

The ARC- Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) seeks to appoint an experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Nelspruit in the Mpumalanga Province: 
 
RESEARCHER: CROP PROTECTION (PLANT PATHOLOGY) (RE-ADVERTISEMENT) 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
Reporting directly to the Research Team Manager Crop Protection, this position requires a hard-working scientist and a self-starter to conduct research on tropical and subtropical fruit crops in the field of Plant Pathology. 
 Initiate/manage research on subtropical fruit diseases. 
 Write publications/present research outcomes of relevance to subtropical fruit growers, industries and the scientific community. 
 Provide leadership and mentoring to research technicians, assistance and students. 
 Evaluate control programmes for diseases of subtropical crops and develop improved alternatives. 
 Liaise with growers, industry technical officers and national and provincial government. 
 Perform data analysis of trials and generate Intellectual Property. 
 Develop project proposals in line with presidential imperatives, strategic goals and research themes of the ARC. 
 Contribute to the status of the ARC through high quality research findings/products in compliance with generally accepted scientific standards. 
 
Requirements: 
 PhD in Plant Virology/Plant Pathology. 
 A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a scientific research environment studying the diseases of subtropical crops. 
 In depth knowledge of Plant Virology/Plant Pathology and molecular detection techniques applicable to this field. 
 Proven record of at least 3 peer reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences and symposia. 
 Proven history of collaboration on national level. 
 Proven history of mentoring and supervising/co-supervising other researchers’ and students’ development. 
 Proven history of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise. 
 Proficiency in Ms Office Suite. 
 Code EB driver’s licence.

The ARC-Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC–VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria: 
 
RESEARCH TECHNICIAN – ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Assist in developing and validating analytical methods involving the use of HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, ICP-OES/MS, etc. 
 Co-ordinates and contributes towards projects by compiling and executing technical project activity plans particularly in relation to analytical studies of medicinal and industrial plants as well as vegetables. 
 Implementing ISO 17025 quality requirements within the laboratory. 
 Performs routine analytical testing of samples. 
 Collects, captures, processes and interpret technical data and makes internal recommendations. 
 Compiles detailed technical reports and submits for approval. 
 Recommends new technologies to be optimised. 
 Develops technical capacity at an appropriate level. 
 Assist with identifying new business opportunities and proactively with provision of laboratory services. 
 Ensures optimal utilisation of resources. 
 Compliance with human resources policies and procedures. 
 Compliance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures. 
 
Requirements: 
 BTech/BSc or National Diploma in Chemistry or closely related field. 
 Minimum of 2 years relevant experience in analytical laboratory research. 
 Fundamental knowledge of chromatography. 
 Ability to work under pressure while ensuring timeous and quality analysis of samples received. 
 Experience in an accredited laboratory will be an advantage. 
 Knowledge of, and/or experience in laboratory quality management systems. 
 Good communication skills (verbal and written). 
 Proficiency in Ms Office suite. 
 Valid driver’s license. 
 Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage.
