The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC-OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria. 
 
SENIOR RESEARCHER: EPV 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Development and improvement of serological diagnostic assays for blood-borne parasites (ELISA, POC, etc.) 
• Preparation of antigens (recombinant and cell culture based) used in serological assays. 
• Research to identify immunogenic antigens of interest using genomic and proteomic technologies. 
• Epidemiological Research. 
• Diagnostic assay validation. 
• Diagnostic and research support to serology. 
• Technical Signatory for diagnostics. 
• Submission of proposals for competitive funding. 
 
Requirements: 
• PhD in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or equivalent qualification. 
• An ability to execute and participate in multi-disciplinary research projects. 
• A minimum of 8 peer reviewed publications, including for both MSc and PhD theses. 
• Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds will be an advantage. 
• Evidence of student training. 
• Good communication skills (written and verbal). 
• Must be able to work independently.

RESEARCHER: VETERINARIAN X 3
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• The incumbent will be involved in research activities on various veterinary diseases of economic importance. 
• Coordinate, plan and conduct veterinary activities required on research projects involving diseases of veterinary importance. 
• Perform clinical duties on animals kept for research purposes. 
• Participate in and authorise diagnostic activities including routine laboratory testing, Proficiency Testing Schemes and National Surveillance Programmes. 
• Participate in the planning and implementation of research projects, including performing animal care duties, giving input into animal ethics applications, and DALRRD Section 20 applications. 
• Compiling detailed reports relating to animal care and comprehensive recommendations for animal care. 
• Manage/supervise animal attendants, Para veterinary staff, CCS veterinarian and SAVC authorised personnel as the need arises. 
• Render expert clinical and diagnostic advice on research projects. 
• Liaise with clients as and when needed including giving expert advice on diagnostic aspects of various veterinary diseases. 
• Collaborate with research and diagnostic staff to publish research in appropriate journals (non-peer-reviewed popular articles, semi scientific and peer-reviewed papers (in journals with high impact factor), and presentation at relevant national and/or international scientific conferences. 
• Train and transfer knowledge to animal attendants, students, field veterinary officials and farmers. 
• Continually update knowledge and develop skills and translate knowledge of advances in the area into research activity. 
• Participate in Programme and Institute-related administrative and other duties as requested by the line manager. 
• Ensure compliance with all SHEQ policies and procedures. 
 
Requirements: 
• BVSc/BVMCh/BVM (Veterinary degree), with at least one year of practical experience. 
• Must be SAVC registered. 
• Good communication skills (written and verbal). 
• Good interpersonal skills. 
• Be willing to work on a weekend rotational basis to perform veterinary duties for all animals housed at ARC-OVR. 
• Experience in laboratory diagnostics, molecular biology or statistics will be an added advantage. 
• Publications in a relevant field.

ARTISAN ASSISTANT: REFRIGERATION 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Assist artisans with maintenance of all cooling units to extend their lifespan.
• Replacement of components of all cooling units. 
• Cleaning and replacement of all ventilation filters. 
• Weekly inspection on all air-cons, fridges, walk in freezers and other lab equipment. 
• Moving equipment to and from workshop to laboratories. 
• General maintenance on equipment in laboratories. 
• Day to day maintenance activities on lab equipment. 
• Ad hoc work activities within the organisation. 
 
Requirements: 
• Senior Certificate. 
• A valid driver’s licence will be an advantage. 
• Two years' experience in general maintenance of coding equipment. 
• General knowledge of handheld equipment to do maintenance on refrigeration equipment.

The ARC-Central Office (ARC-CO) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Hatfield, Pretoria:
 
SENIOR MANAGER: HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT (FIVE (5) YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT) 
 
Key performance areas: 
• Develop and oversee the implementation of the Human Capital Management (HCM) strategy. 
• Provide strategic leadership to the organisation in the integration of the Human Capital strategy to the approved organisational strategy. 
• Develop and implement labour cost management strategy and monitor headcount and organisational design framework. 
• Provide guidance to the organisation in the implementation of Performance management, Human Capital information and Remuneration systems. 
• Compile and manage HCM budgets. 
• Develop and implement Human Capital development policies for all personnel within the organisation. 
• Establish systems to monitor adherence to HCM policies and legislative frameworks. 
• Advise and guide the organisation on all employee relation matters and ensure that the employee relations function renders a timeous advice on all matters of conflict and discipline. 
• Where necessary, represent the organization at the CCMA. 
• Ensure the organisation and all personnel adhere to good occupational safety and health practices. 
• Manage the HCM division and ensure that the capabilities of the HCM personnel are identified and aligned to the needs of the organisation. 
 
Requirements: 
• A post-graduate degree in Human Capital Management or related field. 
• At least five (5) to eight (8) years’ experience in generalist Human Capital Management, two (2) of which were in a senior HCM position. 
• Strong policy formulation and facilitation skills. 
• Demonstrated ability to operate at senior/executive management level. 
• Sound practical knowledge of leading organisational development and business re-engineering process. 
• Ability to initiate, implement and monitor HCM service delivery processes. 
• Ability to establish and lead effective teams as well as maximise their outputs to achieve the organisation’s mandate. 
• In-depth understanding of PFMA. 
• A proven track record of interaction with labour in various forums. 
• Influencing, negotiating and problem-solving skills. 
• Strong analytical and critical thinking ability. 
• Sound oral and written communication skills.
