The ARC- Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC– OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria:
 
QUALITY ASSURANCE MANAGER- RE-ADVERTISEMENT
Salary (R708 556 – R1 062 835 pa) All-inclusive remuneration package
 
Key Performance Areas:
 Strategic management and direction of Quality management,
 Thorough Knowledge of Laboratory QMS and ISO/IEC Standard 17025:2017, DALRRD and OIE requirements,
 Providing strategic direction for risk management of the organisation,
 Providing strategic direction for laboratory biosafety and biosecurity management,
 Experienced in interpretation of data analysis,
 Compiles detailed quarterly and yearly performance reports with information receive from Officers as well as reports for external stakeholders,
 Knowledge of and compiles WOAH annual reference laboratory reports after consultation with laboratory experts,
 Identify and arrange workshops, in-house training or courses for internal and external clients,
 Successful mentoring/ supervision of Quality Assurance Officers,
 Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures in collaboration with OHS Officer,
 Responsible for the budget that includes the annual SANAS fees, proficiency testing schemes, etc,
 Participation in project planning and training activities relating to the field of expertise,
 Handling of internal and/or external enquiries and communicating with all stakeholders and suppliers,
 Compile and submit reports as required.
 
Requirements:
 MSc in Quality Assurance Management or related field,
 Three to five years of experience in related field required with supervisory experience,
 Knowledge and experience of QMS and ISO/IEC Standards,
 Knowledge of SANAS documentation and requirements,
 Knowledge of WOAH reports, documentation and requirements,
 Proficiency MS Office Suite,
 Valid driver’s license,
 Understanding the scientific research environment is an added advantage,
 Ability to identify and resolve challenges in line with the policies and regulations,
 Good Analytical skills, report writing and organizations skills.

SENIOR RESEARCHER: EPV - RE-ADVERTISEMENT
Salary (R586 283 – R879 422 pa) All-inclusive remuneration package
 
Key Performance Areas:
 Development and improvement of serological diagnostic assays for blood-borne parasites ELISA, POC, others,
 Preparation of antigens recombinant and cell culture based) used in serological assays,
 Research to identify immunogenic antigens of interest using genomic and proteomic technologies,
 Research on projects of interest as part of a multi-disciplinary team,
 Development and validation of serological and molecular diagnostic assays,
 Diagnostic assay validation,
 Diagnostic and research support to serology,
 Technical Signatory for diagnostics,
 Submission of proposals for competitive funding,
 
Requirements:
 PhD in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or equivalent,
 5 years post PhD experience or postdoctoral, research experience,
 An ability to execute and participate in multidisciplinary research projects,
 Evidence of peer-reviewed publications minimum of 10,
 Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds will be an advantage,
 Evidence of student training,
 Excellent communication skills written and verbal,
 Must be able to work independently and reliable,

RESEARCHER: VETERINARIAN: EPV RE-ADVERTISEMENT
Salary (R479 675 – R719 514 pa) All-inclusive remuneration package
 
Key Performance Areas:
 Perform veterinary duties in EPV such as animal care and for animal ethics, DAFF section 20 veterinary requirements, supervision of personnel authorized by SAVC and training of animal attendants,
 Plan and undertake research in field of vector-borne diseases as individual or part of research team.
 Apply for research grants,
 Train and transfer knowledge to students, field veterinary officials and farmers,
 Publication of research in appropriate journals and presentation at relevant national and/or international scientific conferences,
 Continually update knowledge and develop skills, and translate knowledge of advances in the area into research activity. Further studies to develop career,
 Participate in Programme and Institute-related administrative and other duties as requested by the line manager.
 
Requirements:
 BVSc/BVMCh/BVM Veterinary degree,
 SAVC registered,
 PhD or MSc with 5 year experience in the biological sciences and publications will be an advantage,
 A good knowledge of statistical methods is an advantage,
 Evidence of sourcing or obtaining research funds is an advantage,

SENIOR RESEARCHER VETERINARIAN (Re-advertisement)

Key Performance Areas:
 Manage the entire diagnostic section and its human and capital resources,
 Drawing up budgets, reviewing diagnostic prices, approving requisitions and writing deviations, identifying and motivating for capex,
 Conduct performance appraisals, initiate or be involved in disciplinary matters; compile or contribute to management reports; initiate and attend meetings; resolve operational problems; liaise with stakeholders,
 Verify diagnostic reports and authorise them; liaise with clients; perform tests when necessary, provide guidance on diagnostic approaches and work flow when occasion demands,
 Review and authorise all Quality Assurance (QA) documents and generate some; review and authorise all proficiency test (PT)/inter laboratory test (ILT) reports; organise PT and ILT; read root cause analysis (RCA) reports and monitor compliance with resolutions taken; attend and convene QA meetings and training sessions; validate tests and compile validation reports,
 Ensure compliance with animal health and welfare requirements; be part of the animal ethics committee (AEC) and draft and review applications; be involved in addressing and resolving matters raised by the AEC; perform veterinary work,
 Build capacity through training others e.g. technicians, veterinarians, researchers, farmers, students.

SENIOR RESEARCHER- RE ADVERTISEMENT
Salary (R586 283 – R879 422 pa) All-inclusive remuneration package
 
Key Performance Areas:
 Manage the entire Diagnostic Services Programme’s proficiency test (PT) and inter laboratory test (ILT) scheme and its capital resources, including drawing up budgets, reviewing prices, writing deviations, identifying and motivating for capex; compile or contribute to management reports, initiate and attend meetings; resolve operational problems; liaise with stakeholders nationally and internationally,
 Determine needs and uses of PT from stakeholders,
 Design PTs, choose test materials and produce PT panels’ in-vivo and in-vitro,
 Determine which assays must be used to verify and annotate PT panels, test the samples, and co-ordinate testing with relevant laboratories within the Diagnostic Services and other Programmes,
 Trouble shoot in case of challenges experienced with the quality of samples and reagents produced, using various veterinary skills and laboratory methods,
 Coordinate labelling, packaging, storage and distribution of PT materials and panels in collaboration with the institute’s quality assurance manager,
 Perform statistical analysis and interpretation of PT data from participating laboratories, and determine action criteria in collaboration with Heads of Laboratories and authorise PT reports,
 Keep all records of reagents produced, PTs participation and PTs results and reports and any other related information,
 Review and authorise all Quality Assurance (QA) documents pertaining to the PTs and generate some, in collaboration with quality officers in the Diagnostic Services Programme,
 Assist with all veterinary work within the Diagnostic Services Programme when needed,
 Ensure compliance with animal health and welfare requirements; be part of the animal ethics committee (AEC) and draft and review applications; be involved in addressing and resolving matters raised by the AEC,
 Build capacity through training others e.g. technicians, veterinarians, researchers, students etc,
 Mentor students to acquire higher degree qualifications.
 Identify research projects especially related to diagnostics; seek collaborations; source funding; execute research work; present research findings at scientific gatherings; publish research findings; support other people’s research.

The ARC- Biotechnology Platform (ARC– BTP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following positions at Onderstepoort:
 
SENIOR RESEARCHER: PLANT GENOMICS: RE-ADVERTISEMENT
Salary (R586 283 – R879 422 pa) All-inclusive remuneration package
 
Key Performance Areas:
 Lead research programs that will undertake support and research activities in areas such as statistical and structural genomics, next generation sequencing, transcriptomic, quantitative and association genetics and molecular modelling in agricultural plants within the mandate of the ARC,
 Collaborate and interact with research teams across ARC to ensure broad application of genomics and statistical genomics tools in crop research programs of the ARC,
 Expand and or develop new skills and technologies in genomics in line with the needs of ARC crop research programs,
 Supervise postgraduate students in advanced Plant Genomics,
 Raise funds to ensure the optimal functioning of the Biotechnology Platform and research program at the cutting edge of available technologies.
 
Requirements:
 PhD in plant genetics/genomics or related field,
 5 years post PhD experience or postdoctoral, research experience,
 Ability to manage a research team or research programs,
 Ability to supervise postgraduate students as demonstrated by a good track record of student supervision,
 Appropriate track record of publication in research journals and recognition within the research community,
 Experience in project management and resource mobilisation inclusive of fund raising,
