The ARC-Plant Health and Protection (ARC-PHP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Vredenburg campus, Stellenbosch: 
 
RESEARCHER: HONEYBEE RESEARCH 
3 YEARS FIXED TERM CONTRACT 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Develop, monitor and evaluate the national monitoring network for American Foulbrood (AFB) disease of honeybees. 
• Monitor and evaluate the impact of honeybee pests and diseases in South Africa.
• Oversee the experimental layout, data collection and analysis of pollination trials with honeybees in a range of horticultural and orchard crops in South Africa. 
• Evaluate the pollination services provided by honeybees on various crops. 
• Activity source new research opportunities, and write proposals for funding. 
• Publish research results in reputable scientific journals. 
• Produce popular articles to create awareness regarding honeybee pests and diseases, pollination biology. 
• Produce quarterly reports, annual reports and client reports. 
• Provide mentoring supervision of research assistant staff and postgraduate students. 
• Initiate, conduct, coordinate and manage research projects in compliance with set standards, client needs and specifications within budget and on time. 
• Successful initiation/proposal and completion of research programmes/projects contained in the business plan of the institute in line with the overall Corporate Program and Strategy of the ARC.
• Contribute to the image of the ARC through high quality research findings/products in compliance with expected scientific standards. 
 
Requirements: 
 PhD degree in Entomology/Ecology (or similar) as the major or MSc with 5 years of relevant experience. 
 Proven research record of accomplishment in Entomology/environmental science. 
 Experience of field research in entomology/environmental science/honeybee research will be an advantage. 
 Beekeeping skills and experience will be an advantage. 
 Experience in facilitation in training events. 
 Proven record of publication of scientific papers, report writing, and compiling scientific and popular presentations as well as networking and co-ordination of projects at national level. 
 Code B/EB driver’s license required. 
 Willingness to do fieldwork and to travel on fieldwork trips is a requirement. This post may require the incumbent to do field work in remote areas. Field trips may require occasional absence from home for 3 to 8 days at a time.

The ARC-Onderstepoort Veterinary Research (ARC–OVR) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions at Onderstepoort, Pretoria: 
 
SENIOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: VACCINE PRODUCTION: TAD 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• The incumbent will partake in diagnostic activities on transboundary animal diseases, focusing mainly on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) with specific emphasis on serological, molecular and virological assays. 
• The successful candidate will be responsible to perform diagnostics, manage data capture, analysis, interpret results and make recommendations with regards to the status of diagnostic samples. 
• Perform TAD diagnostics: allocate, process, manage and track diagnostic samples to the Molecular Diagnostic section of the TAD diagnostic laboratory. 
• Management of human resources: identifies the need for human resources and manages them. 
• To manage project budgets: is accountable for compiling and managing project budget. Develops business cases for all project expenditure requirements. 
• Plan and co-ordinate molecular diagnostic activities within single or multidisciplinary team. 
• Identifies and manages resource needs. 
• Identifies risks and mitigation plans within the diagnostic focus area. 
• Maintain and manage assets from diagnostic activities. 
• Supports senior research team in special research projects. 
• Responsible for normal housekeeping duties such as recording temperatures of fridges & freezers, quality control, maintenance of apparatus. 
 
Requirements: 
• M.Tech degree (or equivalent NQF9) plus 2 years applicable experience; Or Bachelor’s degree or Bachelor Honours degree B.Tech Or National Higher Diploma with 6 years applicable experience Or National Diploma (3 years) (or equivalent NQF6) with 8 years applicable experience. 
• Must be registered with South African Veterinary Council (SAVC). 
• Good communication and interpersonal skills. 
• Good computer skills.

RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: VACCINE PRODUCTION: TAD 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• The incumbent will partake in diagnostic activities on transboundary animal diseases, focusing mainly on data capturing, costumer communication, account management, reporting and invoicing. 
• The incumbent will also provide additional technical support in case of disease outbreaks by performing serological, molecular and virological assays. 
• Receive and register samples at the TAD diagnostics Laboratory. 
• Capture diagnostic data on Labware and other information databases used by the laboratory. 
• Management and maintain Labware and other information databases used by the laboratory. 
• Manage customer correspondence. 
• Distribute test reports. 
• Coordinate completion of jobs on Labware and assist Finance with regards to invoicing. 
• Capture Quality Performance data for each of the assays performed tat TAD. 
• Identifies and manages resource needs. 
• Identifies risks and mitigation plans within the diagnostic focus area. 
• Maintain and manage assets from diagnostic activities. 
• Supports senior research team in special research projects. 
• Responsible for normal housekeeping duties such as recording temperatures of fridges & freezers, quality control, and maintenance of apparatus. 
 
Requirements: 
• 3-years National Diploma or equivalent NQF 6 in Veterinary Technology or related field, Or a relevant 2-year qualification at a recognised institution with 3 years applicable experience. 
• Must be registered with South African Veterinary Council (SAVC). 
• Proficiency in MS Office suite. 
• Good people and analytical skills, report writing and organizations skills.
