The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. The ARC-Central Office (ARC-CO) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Hatfield, Pretoria: 
 
AGRICULTURAL ECONOMIST 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Provide expertise for quality research and analysis in the field of agricultural economics, including- macroeconomic development, impact of R&D on socio-economic development, economics of agricultural technology policy; 
 Provide strategic advice with respect to economic trends and implications on ARC business; 
 Evaluate the viability of research programmes of the ARC, to support investment decisions and determine the impact of the ARC’s research and technology transfer effort; 
 Contribute to positioning the Economic Analysis Unit of the ARC as a Centre of excellence in research; 
 Drive conceptualisation and implementation of multidisciplinary research projects and scaling of research for impact across the ARC; 
 Mobilise internal and external funding for research projects; 
 Contribute to student supervision, mentoring and peer-support of colleagues; 
 Publish research in accredited peer reviewed journals. 
 
Requirements: 
 A PhD degree in Agricultural Economics or a relevant field; 
 3-5 years’ relevant postgraduate work experience (can be before or after the PhD); 
 Proven capabilities for quantitative data analysis and competency with at least two of SPSS, Stata and EViews; 
 Evidence of ability to publish in agricultural economics or related fields of research (at least 3 publications); 
 Sound understanding of the priorities and challenges facing the agricultural sector in South Africa; 
 Ability to build and manage relationships with other researchers, as well as a wide range of stakeholders outside ARC; 
 A valid code EC1 Driver’s Licence.

The ARC-Grain Crops (ARC-GC) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced, and dynamic person to the following position at Potchefstroom, Northwest: 
 
Senior Manager Research: Grain Crops (5 years fixed term) 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Provide scientific leadership in the research and development initiatives on Grain Crops (including, but not limited to, Maize, Sorghum, Cowpeas, Dry Beans, Groundnuts, Soybeans, and Sunflower); 
 Ensure availability of expertise to translate research and development initiatives;
 Ensure effective functioning of the business unit, including support functions;
 Manage business risks by identifying and developing appropriate risk management strategies, including compliance; 
 Provide scientific and high-quality leadership in various aspects of agricultural development and technology transfer on Grain Crops; 
 Produce high-quality peer reviewed papers and oversee the production of papers by other members of the research team; 
 Exhibit knowledge and involvement in collaborative research with other institutions across the range of disciplines relevant to the work of the ARC; 
 Engage in strategic networking with national industry stakeholders, and national and international research funding agencies. 
 
Requirements: 
• Ph.D. in any related field of Field Crops (e.g. Crop Science, Agronomy, Planting Breeding, Plant Pathology, Entomology, and Biotechnology), 
• A 5-year post-qualification experience in Research and Development and 5 years in Senior 
Management or 10 years in the Middle Management level, 
• Strong research record, capacity for project and program management, partnership development, and collaboration, 
• Good communication (written and verbal) skills, 
• Performance and Financial management skills, individual leadership, and good negotiation Skills, 
• Experience in the management of personnel, 
• A valid Code B driver’s license.

The ARC-Vegetables, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) seeks to appoint a highly experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions at Roodeplaat in Gauteng Province: 
 
RESEARCH ASSISTANT – COMMERCIAL IN-VITRO LABORATORY (12 Months fixed term contract) 
Salary (R150 038 - R225 060 pa) all- inclusive remuneration package 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Contribute to research by rendering desired support to research personnel to ensure successful completion of research projects in compliance with set standards; 
 Knowledge of propagation, evaluation, and maintenance of plants; 
 Preparation of growth media and consumables according to protocol for tissue culture and glasshouse trials. 
 Assists in optimising research and administrative processes in the lab; 
 Accurate, correct, and timeous completion of set tasks in line with overall corporate strategy of ARC; 
 Maintain equipment in such a manner that optimal life span is ensured; 
 Utilise material and equipment in a cost-effective manner; 
 Adheres to quality standards; 
 Collects and records data, and provides verbal and written feedback on work activities to supervisor/s 
 Ensure that own and team deadlines are met; 
 Assist in training junior staff;

LABORATORY ASSISTANT – COMMERCIAL IN-VITRO LABORATORY (12 Months fixed term contract) 
Salary (R130 007 – R195 014 pa) all- inclusive remuneration package 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Visible compliance with Health and Safety regulations/procedures. 
 
Requirements: 
 Grade 12 and minimum of three-year’ experience or Grade 10 with 10 years’ experience; 
 Knowledge of plant tissue culture; 
 Knowledge of laboratory operations and equipment; 
 Knowledge of laboratory, quarantine and nursery sanitation requirements; 
 Writing and reading skills and ability to accurately record and label or number samples are essential; 
 Ability to work in a team and use initiative; 
 Drivers licence code B; 
 Provide assistance with all research related technical tasks; 
 Knowledge of propagation, evaluation and maintenance of plants; 
 Accurate, correct and timeous completion of set tasks in line with overall corporate strategy of ARC; 
 Utilise material and equipment in a cost-effective manner; 
 Adheres to quality standards;

 Removal of all used glass/plastic ware, instruments and waste from laboratories then washing, sterilisation and replacement; 
 Keep distilled water containers in laboratories full and sterilized paper and instruments. 
 Cleaning of the laboratory, glassware and equipment; 
 Visible compliance with HR policies and procedures; 
 Grade 10 with five years’ relevant experience, Grade 12 with two years relevant experience will be an added advantage; 
 Knowledge of plant tissue culture; 
 Knowledge of laboratory operations and equipment; 
 Knowledge of laboratory, quarantine and nursery sanitation requirements; 
 Writing and reading skills and ability to accurately record and label or number samples are essential. 
 
 
 
HYGIENE ASSISTANT – COMMERCIAL IN-VITRO LABORATORY (12 Months fixed term contract) 
Salary (R112 652 – R168 978 pa) all- inclusive remuneration package 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Provide assistance with all laboratory’s technical tasks; 
 Maintenance of good hygiene in inoculation rooms, preparation rooms, kitchen, growth rooms, offices, storerooms, and ablution blocks; 
 Removal of all used glass/plastic ware and instruments from laboratories then washing, sterilisation and replacement; 
 Daily removal of waste from laboratories; 
 Proper operation of all equipment in such a manner that optimal life span is ensured; 
 Ensure the PPE is clean and sealed; 
 Timeous reporting of faulty of broken equipment or instrument; 
 Compliance with Health and Safety regulations/procedures. 
 
Requirements: 
 Grade 10 (or equivalent/ RPL) with 2 years relevant experience; 
 Knowledge of laboratory, quarantine and nursery sanitation requirements; 
 Ability to use laboratory equipment; 
 Good communication, writing and reading skills.
