Job Description

• Providing strategic research direction for the Soil Science programme in harmony with the ARC’s Strategic Plan.

• Conceptualizes and initiates new projects / project definition and develop research plan.

• Writes research proposals.

• Identifies new knowledge and new potential IP that will be generated as result of research.

• Pro-active personnel management in terms of application and effective utilization to maintain and strengthen the core of expertise within the Soil Science discipline.

• Recruitment of funding and project management and in an agricultural and natural resource environment, both nationally and internationally.

• Acquisition and maintenance of research equipment, computers, peripherals and specialized software.

• Postgraduate student supervision, mentorship and research team leadership.

• Monitoring and evaluation of research and technology development projects, and maintenance of scientific quality standards.

• Scientific networking, both nationally and internationally.

• Technology Transfer.

• Identifies adaptive or new research needs (needs analysis).

 

Job Requirements

• PhD in Soil Science.

• At least five (5) years post PhD experience.

• Minimum of 12 peer-reviewed publications.

• Proven track record of building national and international partnerships and networks.

• Proven track record of strategic and operational planning skills and expertise.

• Ability to work with communities and conduct fieldwork.

• Willingness to travel away from home for intermediate periods.

• Good communication skills (written and verbal).

• A valid driver's license (code: 8/EB) as the position requires traveling.

  • A minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant experience post PhD in research and development within the crops science sector.
  • A minimum of twenty-five (25) peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Experience in tropical and subtropical crops will be an added advantage.
  • At least ten (10) years’ experience at middle management level, five (5) years relevant experience in research and development in the Crop Sciences environment.
  • Proven capability in project and programme management, partnership development, and collaborative research.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, monitoring, and control skills, with strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Sound performance and financial management skills, with demonstrated leadership and negotiation ability.
  • Proven experience in personnel, financial and facilities management.
