AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
 
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
 
The ARC-Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) seeks to appoint highly skilled, experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga province:
 
SENIOR RESEARCH TECHNICIAN: FRUIT TREE BREEDING (2 POSTS)
(SALARY R381 841 – R572 759 ALL INCLUSIVE PACKAGE P.A)
 

Key performance areas:
 Together with Chief Technician and/or Project Manager, co-ordinates and contributes towards projects, by compiling and executing technical project activity plans,
 Identifies the need for human resources in project(s) (where applicable with the Chief Technician and/or Project Manager) and manages the allocated resources,
 Assists with compiling and managing project budgets,
 Plans and co-ordinates own and technical project work activities. Independently conducts specialist research/technical support, diagnostics, and other services within a project. Renders diagnostic, technical and other services at a national level,
 Collects, captures, processes, interprets technical data, and makes internal project recommendations.
 Compiles detailed technical reports and submits for approval (where applicable),
 Manages project facilities, material and equipment,
 Ensures optimal utilisation of resources,
 Manages and ensures compliance to quality standards,
 Presents results to stakeholders (advises/trains),
 Is aware of Intellectual Property opportunities and assists with identifying new business opportunities.
 
Requirements:
• MSc / M-Tech in Horticulture / Plant Breeding with 2 years applicable experience, or B. Hons or BSc degree with 6 years applicable experience,
• At least 1 year of the applicable experience must be on fruit tree breeding,
• Registration with a relevant scientific registration body will be an added advantage,
• A valid Code EB driver’s licence,
• Advanced computer literacy skills,
 Ability Work under strenuous conditions. (Fieldwork; often under very hot or very cold conditions).
 Handle large amounts of fieldwork.
