AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Vegetable and Ornamental Plants (ARC-VOP) seeks to appoint a highly experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Roodeplaat, Pretoria:
RESEARCHER (INDIGENOUS LEAFY VEGETABLES): CROP SCIENCE DIVISION
Key Performance Areas:
Initiates, manages and contributes towards national projects
Initiates, manages and contributes towards national projects
Accountable for compiling and managing the project budget
Actively sources new national research opportunities and writes proposals
Plans and co-ordinates research with single or multi-disciplinary team
Identifies the need for resources (equipment and material) in project(s) and manages them accordingly
Conducts research, manages data capture, process data with basic analysis, interpretations and recommendations
Disseminates research results by presenting oral and poster contributions, publish semi-scientific and peer reviewed reports / articles
Actively seeks networking opportunities (e.g. attends scientific gatherings, works with farmer communities etc)
Participate in the marketing and dissemination of information (seminars, workshops, courses, radio, TV etc.)
Identify and participate in own learning opportunity
Provide input in the optimisation of new technologies
Contributes to income generation
Meet peer norm requirement for specific field of expertise, by recognising authorship or contributions to publications
Requirements:
PhD in Agronomy, Horticulture or related field with 5 years’ relevant experience.
Demonstrable knowledge of fertilizer management, irrigation scheduling, crop modelling, use of scientific equipment, irrigation systems installation, operation and maintenance
Meets peer norm requirements for specific field of expertise, with a minimum of 5 peer re-viewed publication
Ability to set up research experiments and collect scientific data for analysis
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
Advanced Computer literacy
Valid driver’s license
Occupational Health and Safety experience will be an added advantage

THE CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS IS 19 OCTOBER 2020
A competitive remuneration package will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and the stature of the position. The appointment will be subject to a six (6) month probation period and a positive security clearance.
