AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Grain Crops (ARC-GC) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Potchefstroom:
RESEARCHER: CROP PROTECTION (WEED SCIENCE): RE-ADVERT
Key Performance Areas:
• Initiates, manages and contributes towards national projects;
• Identifies the need for human resources in project’s and manages the allocated resources;
• Is accountable for compiling and managing the project budget;
• Actively sources new national research opportunities and writes proposals;
• Identifies the need for resources equipment and material in projects and manages accordingly;
• Conducts research, plans and co-ordinates research with single or multi-disciplinary team;
• Manages data capture, analysis, interpretations and recommendations;
• Compiles detailed reports;
• Disseminates research results by presenting oral and poster contributions;
• Publishes semi-scientific and peer reviewed reports and articles;
• Actively seeks networking opportunities e.g. attends scientific gatherings, works with farmer communities etc;
• Renders diagnostic and advisory services at a national level;
• Participate in the marketing and disseminating of information attend specific gathering, works with farmer communities, seminars, workshops, courses, radio, TV etc;
• Builds and maintain relationships with national stakeholders and strategic partners to secure funds;
• Develops capacity at an appropriate level within or outside the realm of projects;
• Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities;
• Ensures compliance with SHE/OHS policies and procedures;
• Supervise and/or co-supervise students; with an emphasis on critical and scarce skills.
Requirements:
• Relevant PhD in Weed Science, Alternatively MSc plus 5 years minimum work experience with extensive publications or Professional Degree plus MSc;,
• Registration with a scientific and professional body will be an added advantage;
• Knowledge of chemical weed and weed science is compulsory;
• Knowledge of chemical weed control in grain crops will be an added advantage;
• Valid driver’s license.
