AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
 
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and fosters innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research campuses and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa. 
 
The ARC-Agricultural Engineering (ARC-AE) seeks to appoint a highly experienced and dynamic person to the following position in Silverton, Pretoria: 
 
RESEARCH TEAM MANAGER: AGRICULTURAL MECHANISATION & AGRO-PROCESSING 

 
Key Performance Areas: 
 Provide strategic leadership and management of the ARC-Agricultural Engineering Campus; 
 Establish and lead the research programme within the areas of interest and expertise in engineering as applied to agricultural problems; 
 Administrative functions leading to team building and mentoring of staff and young engineers and technicians; 
 Preparation and management of budgets and optimisation of external income; 
 Collaborate and interact with research teams across the ARC to ensure broad application of existing engineering technologies; 
 Monitoring and evaluation of research and technology transfer with specialist engineers, as well as general project administration; 
 Acquiring and maintaining research equipment and technologies. 
 

Requirements: 
 PhD in Agricultural Engineering or related discipline, or professional engineering qualification at equivalent level with emphasis on Agricultural Mechanisation; 
 Minimum of 5 years research experience and technical background in advanced engineering technologies applied to agricultural problems; 
 Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or evidence indicating that registration could be granted; 
 Proven record of research publications; 
 Experience in postgraduate student supervision and research team leadership; 
 Managerial experience with excellent interpersonal and administrative skills; 
 Marketing and negotiation skills to secure external funding.

A competitive remuneration package will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and the stature of the position. The appointment will be subject to a six (6) month probation period and a positive security clearance, and preference will be given to South African citizens.
