AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
 
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
 
The ARC-Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) seeks to appoint experienced and dynamic person to the following positions in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province.
 
FARM FOREMAN: FRIEDENHEIM RESEARCH FARM IN NELSPRUIT
 
 
Key Performance Areas:
• Coordinating and controlling farming activities on the research farm,
• Planning, establishment and management of orchards including irrigation systems and drawing up of orchard maps,
• Managing research plots as directed by the researchers,
• Managing the budget of the farm division,
• Maintenance of farm infrastructure,
• Attending industry and stakeholders meeting where applicable,
• Training of identified trainees; assist with the organizing of events to be held on the farm,
• Accountability for the Occupational Health and Safety aspects on the farm as well as training of farm staff on personal safety and other health aspects,
• Controlling all the assets and stocks of the farm division,
• Responsible for harvesting and marketing of farm produce,
• Labour management, capital purchases for the farm and writing of various farm reports.
 
 
Requirements:
• The National Diploma in Agriculture or Horticulture or equivalent qualification with at least two years of Farm Management experience,
• Excellent interpersonal relations, excellent oral and written communication skills,
• Ability to solve problems, organize and work without direct supervision,
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite,
• Experience in coordinating and liaising with stakeholders and clients,
• Good knowledge of the Global gap accreditation scheme,
• Be able to adapt to different working conditions and willing to work long hours in the sun or adverse weather conditions,
• Occupational Health and Safety experience will be an added advantage.

JUNIOR RESEARCHER: HORTICULTURE NELSPRUIT RESEARCH FARM
 
Key Performance Areas:
• Participating in research projects - undertaking both laboratory and field research across a variety of crops and projects under the mentorship of senior colleagues and independently,
• Assisting with capturing, analysing and interpreting data,
• Assisting with managing project resources - CAPEX and consumables,
• Assisting in sourcing new research opportunities and writing proposals for funding, compiling and managing project budget,
• Contributing to client reports as well as internal monthly and quarterly reports,
• Publishing research results using relevant technology transfer vehicles conferences, popular articles etc.,
• Co-authoring peer-reviewed journal articles,
• Networking at various scientific and industry gatherings to build relationships with stakeholders,
• Contributing towards training courses.
 
Requirements:
• MSc in Horticulture with 2 years’ applicable research experience in plant physiology Experience in plant improvement of tree crops, preferably subtropical crops, will be an added advantage,
• Ability to liaise with clients and industry members on project progress,
• Ability to carry our technology transfer to farmers, students and industry members,
• Ability to organize and work independently and in a team, including supervision of students,
• The ability to undertake experimental design and statistics,
• Good communication verbal and written skills,
• Code B or EB driver’s licence,
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
