AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wide network of research campuses and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC seeks to appoint a highly-skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Hatfield, Pretoria:
CEO and PRESIDENT - Five (5) year fixed-term contract
The CEO and President will be responsible to provide oversight and formulate an overall strategy and policy for a high performing, professional and transformational organisation to drive its mission and achieve the organisational objectives within the respective fields of expertise. The successful candidate must be a credible individual of unquestionable integrity. The applicant must have strong capabilities in strategic leadership, policy development and have a good understanding of legal and financial principles as well as desirable public speaking skills.
Key Performance Areas:
Fulfil the role of an effective CEO and President and ensure efficient, effective and economical oversight, management and administration of the ARC.
Actively drive initiatives to enhance the ARC’s impact and visibility locally and internationally.
Provide strategic leadership and management of the ARC to achieve its mandate on its mission.
Provide intellectual and strategic leadership across the organisation stimulating the development and adoption of high-quality and applicable research solutions.
To position the ARC in the industry as an organisation that strives for excellence in research and development whilst fulfilling a leading role in the transformation of the sector (e.g. Smallholder agricultural development) through effective stakeholder relationship management.
Proven ability to drive growth and financial stability of the organisation through effective engagements with a range of external stakeholders such as strategic departments, industry and international funders and partners.

Sustain the organisation through effective sourcing, procuring, planning and managing of financial and other resources for optimal performance.
Account to the Council of the ARC on the performance of the organisation, provide executive support to the Council and chairperson, and participate in special and ad hoc projects as required and/or delegated.
Continue the transformation of the ARC, with particular regard to its contextual knowledge production, staff capacity-building and organisational structure and culture; and
Position the ARC as a national and one of internationally recognised leader in agricultural.
Minimum Requirements:
PhD or equivalent qualification. A postgraduate qualification in Management Studies would be an added advantage. Registration with a relevant scientific body, if applicable.
A national and international scientific track record and recognition.
10 years post-PhD experience in a relevant scientific research environment, with at least 5 years’ experience in executive or senior management level in the public and /or private sector.
A comprehensive understanding of the entire organisation, together with in-depth knowledge of the industry in which the company operates, including a thorough understanding of economic, commercial and political issues affecting the industry.
Peer-reviewed publications.
Evidence of experience in delivering projects that integrate science into solutions for agricultural production and productivity.
A strong track record of organisational leadership and experience in establishing and managing complex relationships and partnerships.
Thorough understanding of the agricultural sector and regulatory environment.
Account to the Council of the ARC on the performance of the organisation, provide executive support to the Council and chairperson, and participate in special and ad hoc projects as required and/or delegated.

A competitive remuneration package subject to the prevailing statutory framework will be congruent with the scope, responsibilities and stature of the position. The appointment will be subject to a positive security clearance and successful competency assessment. Preference will be given to South African citizens.
