The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and fosters innovation in support of the agricultural sector. The ARC-Soil, Climate and Water (ARC-SCW) seeks to appoint highly experienced and dynamic persons to the following positions in Arcadia, Pretoria:
RESEARCHER: SOIL SCIENCE
Key Performance Areas:
• Provide strategic research direction for the Soil Science programme in harmony with the ARC’s Strategic Plan,
• Pro-active personnel management in terms of application and effective utilisation to maintain and strengthen the core of expertise within the Soil Science (Pedology) discipline,
• Recruitment of funding and project management in an agricultural and natural resource environment, both nationally and internationally,
• Acquisition and maintenance of research equipment, computers, peripherals and specialised software,
• Postgraduate student supervision, mentorship and research team leadership,
• Monitoring and evaluation of research and technology development projects, and maintenance of scientific quality standards,
• Scientific networking, both nationally and internationally,
• Technology transfer.

Requirements:
• PhD in Soil Science/Agronomy with strong background in Weed Science,
• A proven research background across various fields of Soil Science,
• Previous experience in Conservation Agriculture would be an advantage,
• Ability to work with communities and conduct fieldwork,
• Experience in student supervision and mentoring,
• Registration with SACNASP or evidence that registration could be obtained,
• Good communication skills written and verbal,
• Willingness to travel away from home for intermediate periods,
• Valid driver’s licence (code 08/EB).

RESEARCHER: ANALYTICAL SOIL CHEMISTRY
Key Performance Areas:
• Grow the Soil Science programme as a whole and the Analytical Services unit in particular,
• Provide relevant soil chemical inputs to research projects and a range of soil and other analyses,
• Project management and recruitment of funding in an agricultural and natural resource environment, both nationally and internationally,
• Monitoring and evaluation of analytical processes, and maintenance of scientific quality standards,
• Acquisition and maintenance of research and analytical equipment, computers, peripherals and specialised software,
• Compile analytical reports for clients,
• Contribute to reporting research findings in scientific articles,
• Mentoring young scientists/technicians/postgraduate students and discharging duties in a multidisciplinary and multi-cultural research team.
Requirements:
• PhD in Soil Science, specialising in Soil Chemistry,
• A proven research background in a soil (or related) laboratory environment,
• Knowledge of a wide range of analytical instrumentation, including ICP-MS and ICP-OES,
• Experience of supervising and managing within research projects,
• Experience of SANAS accreditation procedures would be an advantage,
• A proven ability to secure national and international external research grant/funding,
• Good communication skills written and verbal,
• Valid driver’s licence code 08/EB.

The ARC-Agricultural Engineering (ARC-AE) seeks to appoint a highly experienced and dynamic person to the following position in Silverton, Pretoria:
SENIOR RESEARCHER: IRRIGATION AND AGRICULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEERING
Key Performance Areas:
• Provide strategic leadership and management of the ARC-Agricultural Engineering division,
• Establish and lead a research programme within the areas of interest and expertise in engineering as applied to agricultural problems,
• Lead the implementation of advanced engineering technologies,
• Collaborate and interact with research teams across the ARC to ensure broad application of existing engineering technologies,
• Train postgraduate students in the application of next generation agricultural engineering technologies,
• Raise funds to ensure the optimal functioning of research programmes at the cutting edge of available technologies.
Requirements:
• PhD in Engineering or equivalent,
• Minimum of five (5) years’ research experience and technical background in advanced engineering
technologies applied to agricultural problems,
• Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA),
• Minimum of eight (8) relevant peer-reviewed publications,
• Significant experience in project management, research team leadership and postgraduate student supervision,
• A proven ability to secure national and international research grants/funding,
• Good communication skills written and verbal,
• Valid driver’s licence code 08/EB.
