OVERVIEW OF THE FACULTY OF LAW

 

The Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria strives to be an internationally recognised leader in socially relevant legal research and education in South Africa and the world. In pursuing its vision, the Faculty’s mission is to create and sustain a research and education environment grounded in the values of social justice and excellence. We have the necessary structures and systems in place to ensure our graduates receive the guidance and support they need to graduate on time.

 

The Faculty is currently staffed by over 70 dedicated full-time academics, of whom 74% hold doctoral degrees in various fields of law, enabling them to prepare our student community for law-related career opportunities, and fifteen NRF-rated researchers. The Faculty prepares our students to become bespoke jurists and leaders of their communities, enabling them to promote social justice effectively. It has a vibrant student life and active student bodies which pursue the rule of law through excellence.

 

The Faculty comprises five (5) academic departments and six (6) academic centres, namely: the Centre for Child Law, the Centre for Human Rights, the Centre for Environmental Justice in Africa, the Centre for Medicine and Law, the Centre for Intellectual Property Law, and the Centre for Sport and Entertainment Law. The Faculty is also home to the ABSA Chair in Banking Law, SARChI Chair in International Constitutional Law and the UNESCO Chair in Education Law in Africa. In addition, the Faculty hosts the Institute for International and Comparative Law in Africa, the International Development Law Unit, the Extractive Industry Law in Africa Unit, the Unit for Insurance Law in Africa, the Unit for Banking Law in Africa, and the Unit for Business Rescue and Insolvency Law.

POSITION AND APPOINTMENT

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR AND DEPUTY DEAN: TEACHING AND LEARNING

The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor and Deputy Dean: Teaching and Learning, who meets the requirements for the position. The appointment will be in addition to the successful candidate's existing academic appointment and will require at least 50% of their time, as negotiated by the Dean. The Deputy Dean appointment is for a fixed term of four (4) years, and renewal is subject to performance. As part of the Faculty management team, the Deputy Dean will play an essential supportive role, assisting the Dean in developing and managing the Faculty's teaching and learning and community engagement portfolios, as well as fulfilling other functions as delegated by the Executive.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following, amongst other duties:

  • Performing academic, managerial, and administrative responsibilities in the Office of the Dean.
  • Providing strategic leadership in the development and implementation of the Faculty’s Teaching and Learning strategy. 
  • Chairing the Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee.
  • Aligning the Faculty teaching priorities with institutional goals and national higher education frameworks. 
  • Driving innovation and continuous improvement in teaching and learning, including the promotion of technology use in teaching and learning.
  • Promoting innovative and evidence-based teaching methodologies.
  • Leading the design, review, and continuous improvement of undergraduate law programmes. 
  • Ensuring the curriculum is relevant, responsive, and aligned with societal, legal, and professional developments.
  • Leading and supporting inter- and transdisciplinary teaching, as well as curriculum transformation, curricular development and community engagement. 
  • Overseeing quality assurance processes relating to teaching and learning. 
  • Ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and higher education regulatory requirements. 
  • Monitoring academic performance indicators, including pass rates, throughput, and programme effectiveness.
  • Supporting academic staff development in pedagogy and assessment practices.
  • Fostering a culture of research-informed teaching and continuous professional development.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to enhance student success and retention.
  • Facilitating capacity-building initiatives in teaching and learning and community engagement. 
  • Facilitating liaison between the student body (residences and class representatives), academic staff, Faculty leadership, and external stakeholders. 
  • Engaging with professional bodies and relevant external partners to enhance programme relevance.
  • Overseeing the monitoring and evaluation of strategic teaching and learning and community engagement initiatives, as well as undergraduate and postgraduate offerings.
  • Performing any other duties that may be assigned by the Dean or members of the Executive.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A relevant doctorate with specialisation in the broad field of law.
  • Requisite qualifications and experience to be eligible for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria, the assessment of which is based on several factors, including teaching, research, and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration, and academic citizenship.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of academic management/leadership experience in a higher education institution.
  • Proven, ongoing track record of excellence in leading teams in academic programmes development and implementation.
  • Proven leadership in developing inter-faculty undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
  • Proven experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision.
  • Proven track record in leading teaching excellence initiatives and capacity-building programmes.
  • Evidence of a sustained research track record and good publications in accredited, peer-reviewed journals.

 

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)

  • Recognised academic status in the broad field of law at the level of associate professor or professor.

REMUNERATION AND APPOINTMENT

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the Bestmed and Umvuzo medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.

 

The Deputy Deanship is a term appointment and is aligned with the term of appointment of the Dean. The Deputy Dean appointment will be in addition to the successful candidate’s academic appointment. POSITION

The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Professor and Head of Department. The appointment will be additional to the successful candidate’s academic appointment.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:


• Supporting the Dean in advancing the Faculty of Education’s strategic vision.

• Leading the strategic, academic, and operational management of the Department.

• Enhancing the Department’s research profile and fostering impactful scholarly outputs.

• Enhancing quality teaching, learning and student support in the Department.

• Overseeing the academic and professional education and training activities within the Department.

• Serving as an active academic leader, advancing the discipline at national and international levels.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The following criteria must be fulfilled for appointment at the level of Associate Professor:

• A relevant doctorate with specialisation in Education Management and Policy Studies, Curriculum Studies or

closely related field;

• At least 5 years’ teaching experience in Higher Education Institutions or other closely related education sectors;

• Comprehensive teaching portfolio;

• Meaningful engagement with student feedback;

• At least 11 publications (journals, book chapters, books) of which:

       • 4 should be in a mix of internationally and nationally accredited journals;

       • 3 publications should be sole authored;

• At least six (6) students supervised to completion of which two (2) must be PhD’s of which one (1) should be sole supervised;

• Proven national and international peer recognition;

• Proven experience in raising research funding;

• Active international collaborations;

• International conference presentations;

• Community engagement in a related field;

• Involvement in Work-Integrated Learning (e.g., Teaching Practice);

• Proven active academic citizenship and mentoring;

• Proven academic administration experience;

• Membership of departmental/faculty/ institutional committees;

• At least 8 years’ teaching experience in Higher Education Institutions or other closely related education sectors;

• Meaningful engagement with student feedback;

• Proven leadership experience in broader curriculum development and scholarship of teaching and learning;

• Proven transformational leadership in curriculum development and innovation;

• At least 16 publications (journals, book chapters, books) of which;

     • 10 should be in a mix of internationally and nationally accredited journals;

     • 5 publications should be sole authored;

     • At least eight (8) students supervised in completion at Masters or Doctoral level;

• At least four (4) Doctoral level students supervised, of which three (3) should be sole supervision;

• Proven national and international peer recognition;

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / SENIOR LECTURER (PLANT BREEDING) (ONE POSITION)

BACKGROUND:

The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria is a leading research and teaching department in the disciplines of basic and applied plant sciences both in Africa and internationally. It is recognised for the quality, relevance and impact of its research, and its graduates that are sought after by all stakeholders.

The Department is one of the most productive departments at UP, with a strong emphasis on undergraduate and postgraduate training. We have a unique blend of research expertise in crop and tree health and production, soil science, plant biotechnology, phytomedicine, ecology, systematics and biodiversity. The Department hosts the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Garden and the HGWJ Schweickerdt Herbarium. The experimental field sites and plant growth facilities at Innovation Africa @ UP are less than 2 km from the main campus. Within the University, the Department has active collaborations with other departments and research entities, particularly the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) and the Future Africa indigenous food gardens initiative.

One academic position is available in the Department at the level of either Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer with specialisation in plant breeding and a focus on DNA marker based molecular breeding combined with high-throughput phenotyping data (phenomics).  The incumbent will be responsible for developing and stewarding this specialization.  For example, there are excellent opportunities to conduct research in breeding of climate-smart African orphan crops, or in plantation forestry in collaboration with the Forest Molecular Genetics/Eucalyptus and Pine Pathogen Interactions research team at FABI.  The incumbent will be appointed at a level commensurate with their level of experience.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will have an academic mandate to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with an emphasis on molecular plant breeding and precision agriculture. They will supervise honours, masters and doctoral students, and produce research outputs through scientific papers published in international high-impact journals, books, and conference presentations. The incumbent is expected to raise research funds and build a strong, internationally acclaimed research programme in molecular plant breeding/phenomics.

In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Curriculum development, upgrading and updating course material;
  • Participating in professional scientific societies;
  • Participating in community engagement activities;
  • Active involvement in Departmental, Faculty, and/or University administrative tasks.

 

 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Associate Professor:

  • A relevant PhD in Plant Breeding or a related field; 
  • Evidence of being an established researcher (e.g., in South Africa, an NRF rating in the C category or higher);
  • Evidence of current postgraduate student supervision and graduates at masters and doctoral levels;
  • Recent evidence of research outputs in the field of molecular plant breeding/phenotyping at a rate of at least three publications per year in Web of Science-listed journals (average over five years);
  • Recent evidence of oral presentations of research at local and international conferences in an appropriate field;
  • Evidence of leading successful research funding applications (two or more partners);
  • A minimum of five (5) years of tertiary teaching experience;
  • Experience in module coordination and module curriculum development; and
  • Evidence of participation in departmental- and faculty committees;

Senior Lecturer:

  • A relevant PhD in Plant Breeding or a related field; 
  • Evidence of postgraduate supervision as the main supervisor of at least one graduated masters student in a relevant field;
  • Recent evidence of research outputs in the field of molecular plant breeding/phenotyping at a rate of at least two publications per year in DHET-accredited journals (average over three years);
  • Recent evidence of oral presentations of research at local conferences in an appropriate field;
  • Evidence of successful research funding applications;
  • A minimum of two (2) years of tertiary teaching experience;
  • Intent to obtain a National Research Foundation (NRF) rating in the next three years.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 with at least four (4) years’ office administration and secretarial experience; OR

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Applicable professional communication and language skills, both written and verbal;
  • Ability to work under pressure without compromising detail and accuracy;
  • Strong display of customer service acumen;

  • Computer skills, including basic database management and proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google Suite.

 

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • A relevant degree; 
  • Proven work experience in office administration, preferably within a higher education academic; and
  • Experience with PeopleSoft’s Human Capital Management System and Student Services Centre.
  • Experience with clickUP or other learning management systems in the tertiary education environment.
  • A driver’s licence.

Senior Lecturer:

  • Lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

 

Senior Lecturer:

  • A doctorate in Management Sciences and/or Leadership;
  • At least 3 years’ relevant tertiary teaching experience and demonstrated competence or appropriate industry experience;
  • At least 2 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs (accepted and/or published) or appropriate industry experience;
  • At least 2 completed Master’s students or involvement with PhD supervision or appropriate industry experience;
  • Evidence of professional/academic citizenship engagement.

 

Associate Professor:

  • A doctorate in Management Sciences and/or Leadership;
  • 6 years of tertiary teaching experience on undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • At least 7 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs, with a quality-adjusted publication score of at least 10 of which at least 3 of the accredited publications or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs should be in the last 5 years (accepted and/or published);
  • Established research focus;
  • At least 4 completed Master’s students over the last 5 years.
  • Evidence of consistent and continued supervision. Involvement with at least 2 doctoral students, 1 as the main supervisor;
  • Evidence of Academic Citizenship/Professional Engagement;

 

Professor:

  • A doctorate in Management Sciences and/or Responsible Leadership;
  • 9 years of tertiary teaching experience on undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • At least 15 accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs, with a quality-adjusted publication score of at least 25 of which at least 3 of the accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs should be in the last 5 years (accepted and/or published);
  • Established research focus and an independent research agenda;
  • Completion of at least 10 Master’s students;
