OVERVIEW OF THE FACULTY
The Faculty of Health Sciences boasts a tradition of excellence in professional healthcare education. Joining the Faculty means becoming part of a new generation of health professionals, trained to exceptional standards with innovative and interactive approaches, integrating the latest technology where appropriate, and providing a rich clinical experience in various settings. The Faculty embodies the University of Pretoria's vision as a leading research-intensive university in Africa recognised internationally for its quality, relevance, impact, and commitment to knowledge creation, people development, and making a difference locally and globally. Home to 4600 undergraduate and 1700 postgraduate students and 1600 online postgraduate diploma and certificate students, the Faculty offers medical and dental fellowship training in over 40 disciplines. Approximately 500 academic staff members are spread across four Schools – Dentistry, Health Care Sciences, Health Systems and Public Health, and Medicine. The Faculty's physical presence spans multiple campuses, including Prinshof North and South Campuses, with satellite campuses at Klinikala Kalafong, Weskoppies, Steve Biko Academic Hospital (SBAH), and academic involvement at Tembisa, Mamelodi, and Mpumalanga.
The Faculty provides training in partnership with the Gauteng Health Department, and the clinical training platforms include SBAH, Kalafong Hospital, Weskoppies Hospital, Tembisa Hospital, Mamelodi Hospital, Tshwane District Hospital (TDH), 1 Military Hospital, Witbank Hospital and the Oral and Dental Hospital. Several clinics and rural platforms are used for training. The Faculty has increased its medical student intake over the years to address the national demand for doctors. The Faculty benefits from these multiple clinical training platforms as they provide essential hands-on experience to students in various health-related fields. This is extended and supplemented by the technologically enabled student spaces created for cocreation, collaboration and innovation, such as the Health Sciences Centre for Simulation and Innovation and the 21st Century Library. POSITION AND APPOINTMENT
ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ADJUNCT PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR AND DEPUTY DEAN: RESEARCH AND POSTGRADUATE STUDIES
The University seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/Adjunct Professor/Professor and Deputy Dean: Research and Postgraduate Studies on a part-time basis. The Deputy Dean appointment will be in addition to the successful candidate’s academic appointment and will require at least 50% of their time as negotiated by the Dean. As part of the Faculty’s senior management team, the Deputy Dean will play an essential supportive role and assist the Dean in developing and managing the research and postgraduate studies portfolio of the Faculty and managing the performance of departments, as well as fulfilling other functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties, among others:
- Carrying out academic, managerial, and administrative responsibilities in the Office of the Deputy Dean: Research and Post Graduate Studies.
- Providing strategic and operational leadership of the research and postgraduate studies portfolio.
- Guide the implementation and execution of the Faculty’s plans for postgraduate studies and research at departmental level.
- Assisting the Dean in developing and implementing innovative research and postgraduate education strategies.
- Providing leadership and chairing Faculty committees related to research and postgraduate studies.
- Fostering and maintaining strong relationships with the relevant stakeholders within and outside the University.
- Developing and nurturing an environment that will enable the departments to achieve their targets for research and postgraduate enrolments, and for postgraduate throughput.
- Lead the development and facilitation innovation initiatives to enrich research, postgraduate education and improvement of throughput.
- Developing strategies to support early career and postgraduate mentorship.
- Promoting and creating an enabling environment for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research.
- Assisting in the development of effective support and monitoring mechanisms to enhance the quality of postgraduate offerings.
- Assisting the Dean with fundraising for research.
- Establishing and building existing national and international networks.
- Performing any other duties that may be assigned by the Dean and/or members of the Executive.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- A doctorate in a health science field or a specialist qualification in Medicine or Dentistry.
- Requisite qualifications and experience for appointment as an associate or adjunct or full professor at the University of Pretoria, the assessment of which is based on several factors, including teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration and academic citizenship.
- A minimum of five years of academic management experience in a higher education institution.
- A proven, ongoing track record of excellence in leading teams in research and postgraduate programme development and implementation.
- Proven leadership experience in inter-faculty research and postgraduate programmes
- Extensive proven experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision.
- Proven leadership in planning and executing successful fundraising initiatives.
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)
- Recognised academic status in health sciences or specialist fields of Dentistry or Medicine at associate professor/adjunct professor or professor level.
- Proven research excellence and high-quality publications in accredited journals, an established record of teaching accomplishments, and the ability to cultivate a supportive environment for research, postgraduate supervision, lecturing at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and community engagement.

REMUNERATION AND APPOINTMENT
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the Bestmed and Umvuzo medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
The Deputy Deanship is a term appointment linked to a permanent academic appointment and is aligned with the term of appointment of the Dean. External candidates will also be considered for permanent academic appointment in a suitable academic department.

Key responsibilities include:
Under the supervision of the relevant Deputy-Director:
Student Discipline
- Ensuring that all reported cases of student misconduct are dealt with in accordance with the Disciplinary Code: Students;
- Negotiating and finalising plea and penalty agreements with students who wish to plead guilty in accordance with the formal plea and penalty procedure in the Code;
- See to it that the formal disciplinary procedure is followed in respect of cases which are referred to the Disciplinary Committee (Students);
- Assisting with formulating policy guidelines with regard to the discipline of students;
- Managing the process administratively by seeing to it that the outcome of student disciplinary proceedings is communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
Legal Advice
- Providing legal advice and draft legal opinions as and when requested;
- Reviewing of and advising on the impact of proposed and/ or new legislation / regulations / statutory and policy frameworks applicable to the University;
- Drafting of letters of demand and engaging in debt collection measures on behalf of the University, Tukssport, Tukssport Study Centre NPC and other clients, as instructed.
Trademarks
- Assisting with managing the University's Trade Mark Portfolio;
- Assisting with providing advice on Copyright and Trademark infringements and, in consultation with the Information Governance Division, on Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) and Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) matters.
Litigation
- Assisting with University litigation as when necessary;
- Assisting with and furnishing Attorney and Counsel with any relevant documentation or information as requested;
- Attending court proceedings on behalf of the University.

Contracts
- Assisting with reviewing and drafting of wide variety of different agreements which include, but is not limited to, the following agreements:

Training

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- LLB degree;
- Admission as an attorney or advocate;
- One year post-admission experience in the following areas:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with receiving of stock, issuing of stock, handling delivery notes and invoices at the counter, providing effective client service and assisting with stock counts;
- Ensure proper stock control and safe store housekeeping;

JOB PURPOSE:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Draft, compile, and distribute all outgoing notifications, invitations, letters and other important information and documents from the Director to staff members;
- Implement and control the accurate filing of correspondence, documents, presentation agendas, minutes, policies and procedures, contracts, and reports, including the electronic filing system, by regularly improving and updating the system;
- Committee administrative support:
- Plan and schedule meetings, set up venue and audio-visual equipment, and arrange catering;
- Compile and distribute agendas, minutes, and additional documentation;
- Communicate policy decisions, resolutions, and outstanding actions, and distribute to relevant staff members and stakeholders;
- Travel and conference management:
- Coordinate and manage travel related matters for conferences for the Director: DESA;
- Provide travel related support to DESA Deputy Directors when required;
- Events planning and coordination:
- Plan, coordinate, and execute all functions hosted by the Director, including meetings, year-end function, Director's office year-end teambuilding event, international and high-profile stakeholder lunches and other functions;
- Draft and distribute function invitations;
- Oversee attendance register;

- Financial management and administration:
- Purchase refreshments, gifts, and other ad hoc purchases in the Directors office;
- Process all requisitions, and purchase orders which include marketing and media, printing costs, IT equipment, stationary, catering and refreshments, furniture, other assets, conference payments, travel and accommodation costs, and membership fees;
- Follow up on outstanding service delivery, goods, payments, and invoicing with the DESA finance officer;
- Oversee outgoing gift register;
- Liaise and negotiate with service providers;
- Other duties:
- Plan and arrange visitors for staff members, campus tours, and compile itinerary;
- Arrange and coordinate the community engagement project.
- Support Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Merit Award (VCDMA):
- In collaboration with the Deputy Director: Student Recruitment assist with the coordination and management of the Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Merit Award recipients’ programme;
- Manage the support and activities provided over the duration of the VCDMA such as Welcome and Leadership Conference, Achievers Function, and any other events as required;
- Manage the wrap-around support referrals to the Department of Student Affairs (DSA), Faculty Academic Success Couches, Finance Department and any other referrals needed.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will:
- Assist in implementing the TuksAthletics Academy coaching philosophy and long-term athlete development (LTAD) pathway for sprint and hurdles athletes.
