THIS IS A FIXED TERM CONTRACT FOR INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- A Doctoral Degree in faculty of Social Science and Humanities.
- Currently at the academic rank level of Professor or Associate Professor.
- At least five (5) years’ experience in a higher education environment.
- At least three (3) years’ experience in a leadership position in an academic environment.
- A track record of DHET-accredited research publications commensurate with the academic rank level.
- Knowledge of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities’ diverse range of qualifications, the University’s policies, rules, and regulations related to teaching, learning and research.
- Evidence of successful postgraduate supervision, especially at doctoral level.
Additional requirements
- Demonstrable experience in report reviewing and writing.
- Knowledge of the national higher education landscape.
- Membership of a professional body or scientific institution.
- Knowledge of national and international funding agencies, current research strategies and policies.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Providing intellectual and academic leadership in the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.
- Providing the necessary support in implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the strategic direction of the University and Faculty.
- Spearheading awareness within the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities on the existing or future changes, challenges, and opportunities within the Higher Education (HE) sector, strategic direction and imperatives of the University and Faculty.
- Supporting the Dean in driving and ensuring proper compliance in respect of quality teaching and learning, research, community engagement and academic citizenship within the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and provide the necessary interventions when necessary.
- Supporting the Dean in conceptualizing, examining, implementing, and reviewing the academic standards, processes, systems, and procedures at both the Faculty and departmental levels.
COMPETENCIES:
- Demonstrable track record of engagement with teaching and learning theory or theories and in curriculum development.
- Proven experience in managing or administering a Faculty Department, Academic Facility, Directorate or Unit.
- A track record in capacity building or development would be advantageous.
- The ability to review, develop and design academic modules, programmes or curricular would be an advantage.
- Sound interpersonal and communication skills.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
The Deputy Dean will support the Dean in carrying out the following responsibilities:
- Ensuring the effective and efficient functioning of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities in respect of the students or student-related affairs: admissions, registrations, curriculum approvals, examinations, and graduation.
- Supporting the Dean in establishing areas of responsibility associated with leading and managing the work of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and that of the departments.
- Participating and encouraging participation in the various University and Faculty Committees, and being available to chair or lead some of the committees when nominated.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2026–2028 (24-month period)
Description:
The Department of Psychology, Social Work and Criminology wishes to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to join the Digital Innovation in Child Protection Research Programme under the supervision of Prof Ulene Schiller.
The programme is an interdisciplinary research initiative that seeks to transform statutory child protection systems through the development, implementation, evaluation and continuous advancement of digital innovations that strengthen evidence-informed practice, organisational effectiveness and outcomes for vulnerable children and families. The programme integrates expertise from social work, digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), implementation science, public administration, information systems and data analytics.
The project within the programme is the Integrated Child Protection Management Application (ICPMA), an innovative digital platform funded through the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), designed to improve statutory child protection practice through enhanced case management, workflow efficiency, decision support, supervision and organisational accountability. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will contribute to the next phase of research associated with this nationally significant project
Requirements:
The successful candidate will preferably:
- Hold a doctoral degree completed within the last five years in Social Work, Psychology, Information Systems, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related discipline from a recognised higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.
- Applicants awaiting graduation must submit an official letter from their university confirming that all doctoral requirements have been completed.
- Demonstrate a strong publication record appropriate to career stage.
- Have experience in quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed-methods research.
- Demonstrate excellent academic writing and communication skills.
- Have experience with research related to digital innovation, implementation science, AI, social services, public sector innovation or child protection (advantageous).
- Demonstrate competence in statistical and/or qualitative data analysis software.
- Be willing to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team.
- Be based primarily at the University of Fort Hare, East London Campus.

Fellowship Expectations:
The successful candidate will contribute to the growth of the Digital Innovation in Child Protection Research Programme through:

- Supporting the implementation and evaluation of the Integrated Child Protection Management Application (ICPMA).
- Contributing to grant applications and collaborative research initiatives.
- Mentoring Master's and Doctoral students.
- Presenting research at national and international conferences.
- Producing policy briefs and stakeholder reports.
Research may contribute to one or more of the programme's five research pillars:

- Child Outcomes and System Performance
Conditions:
- The fellowship is awarded for a 24-month period.
- Renewal after the first year will be subject to satisfactory research performance.
- During the first year, the fellow is expected to submit manuscripts equivalent to two DHET-accredited research output units.
- During the second year, the fellow is expected to have published (or have papers accepted/in press) equivalent to two DHET-accredited research output units.

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship 2026–2028 (24-month period)"
Description: The Department of Biotechnology and Biological Sciences wish to appoint one postdoctoral research fellow (PDRF) to work on the use of eDNA metabarcoding methods to investigate general biodiversity in study areas in the Eastern Cape as well as targeted species surveys. A further aspect of the current research is to assess animal diet through faecal eDNA, and then to also investigate gut microbiome and parasite loads. This can provide us with a holistic overview of animal dietary needs, and health. In addition, the successful applicant will undertake some day-to-day responsibilities in running the laboratory and as such will need to be based in Alice.
Requirements:
- The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate, completed in the last five years, in Zoology or Genetics (or closely related field).

Project requirements:
- The applicant should have a strong background in Conservation Genetics or Molecular Ecology, with experience in both basic (DNA extraction, DNA amplification etc.) and advanced (DNA sequencing, High-throughput sequencing etc.) laboratory techniques.
- Experience with Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology would be advantageous.
- The applicant should have a strong understanding of software package such as R, as well as working knowledge of Linux systems.
- The applicant needs to be able to troubleshoot issues in the laboratory and during analysis independently.
- The applicant should have strong writing skills, with a publication record showing experience in Conservation Genetics or Molecular Ecology.
- Experience in eDNA metabarcoding techniques will be advantageous.

- The Department of Agronomy in the Faculty of Science and Agriculture at the University of Fort Hare wish to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to focus on Advancing Sustainable and Climate-Smart Crop Protection through the Development of Kleinia longiflora-Based Biopesticides. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative research aimed at developing sustainable, environmentally friendly crop protection strategies that support climate-smart agriculture and enhance food security.
Requirements:
- The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate completed in the last five years in Agronomy/Crop Science/Plant Production/Plant Protection at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.

A fulltime postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Public and Constitutional Law, Faculty of Law at the University of Fort Hare.

Requirements:
- The successful candidate will preferably have a doctorate (LLD/PhD/SJD), completed in the last five years, in any of the following areas Public International Law, International Human Rights Law, International Child Rights, Law and Society, International Space Law and related fields at a higher education institution in South Africa or abroad.

Description: The Geography and Environmental Science Discipline wish to appoint one Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) to focus on Community-Based Soil Resource Management and Soil Rehabilitation. The research will use a mixed-methods approach for data collection. Satellite images will be used to assess and map erosion across the Tyume catchment, alongside interviews, focus group discussions, and questionnaires

- PDRF extending into their second and subsequent years are expected to have published (or have in-press) 2 units. All papers must be on the topic of the postdoctoral research and details of the papers must be submitted by the host to the PGS office by the end of each renewal
Duration: The fellowship is valid for 24 months from the month of arrival and may be extended with evidence of good progress.
