Position Purpose

•Lead and ensure efficient terminal operations, drive productivity and profitability of the terminal and ensure that commercial    obligations to customers are fulfilled in a safe and cost-effective manner

•Manage and ensure efficient cargo handling to achieve quick turnaround in loading and unloading of vessels thereby handling more vessels in a shorter space of time and ensuring customer satisfaction

•Ensure compliance of operations with maritime regulations, safety practice and Transnet governance

•Manage and ensure integration with TNPA for the accurate planning of arrival and departure of vessels to ensure optimal berth occupancy

•Integration with TFR for appropriate arrival of trains to ensure that cargo is on time to match vessel arrivals.

•Optimal planning of stacking areas and spaces to ensure that cargo is stacked best suited to the berthing of vessels for quicker movement of cargo to and from the vessel, which will result in improved Gross Crane move per hour and ship working hour.

 

Position Outputs

•Lead and direct Container Terminal operations, ensuring that the productivity and efficiency standards are met, namely: •Achievement of average gross moves per quay crane in line with the shareholder objectives (28 moves per hour) • Meeting of berth production targets as established in the terminal/shipping line contracts •Achievement of truck turn-round time of 30 minutes Gate in and Gate Out and preventing trucks from queuing

•Manage stevedoring, gate operations, yard operations, vessel planning, CFS Operation and support functions, ensuring efficiency and productivity, and compliance to governance

•Provide reliable service to customers, ensuring vessels sail on schedule as per the signed commercial agreements (CTOC)

•Manage, monitor and ensure that safety, health and environmental standards are met throughout the terminal

•Ensure that cost-efficient terminal operations are aligned to, or exceeding best practice

•Liaise closely with shipping companies, customs agents, trucking companies, customs, port authorities, etc. to ensure that their requirements are met

•Ensure the implementation of continuous improvement initiatives including any cross-Operating Division initiatives

•Manage and report on rail performance at the Terminal. Monitor improvement initiatives and escalate to the Managing Executive if rail performance improvement initiative are not yielding the required results

•Participate in the Transnet Port Terminals strategic and Business planning processes in the role of non-executive EXCO member

•Manage the Terminal’s expenditure and ensure that financial and budget targets and constraints are adhered to 

•Coach and direct the Operations Manager, Engineering Manager and Logistics Planning Manager to ensure that Terminal targets are achieved

Manage, motivate, coach and instruct all operations team members. Structure tasks and goals, set priorities, establish efficient tactical plans, organize information, and efficiently execute with due consideration of the following: •Staffing levels for management and bargaining unit employees •Terminal Productivity •High level Operational Strategy •Long term Equipment needs •Long term Capacity needs •Customer and Service requirements •Safety and Health requirements

 

Qualifications and Experience

Minimum B-degree in logistics, maritime and port, engineering or business •Completed post-graduate studies in Port and/or Terminal Management, or related business studies is an added advantage •Minimum 10 years’ experience in terminal operations management in which at least 7 years must be in a managerial role. •Requires excellent managerial skills, including planning, organizing, and directing work •Solid understanding of the container shipping industry and an ability to relate with shipping company and other associated industry managers. •Able to provide leadership, obtain cooperation and assistance to meet objectives within a multi-cultural environment. •Extensive and hands-on experience of modern terminal operations including computer terminal management systems such as Navis N4 Sparcs •Extensive experience of vessel and yard planning and the formulation of tactical stacking plans •Experience in cost and productivity optimization through process optimization, as well as design and implementation of new standard operating procedures •Experience in management of expenditure, budget compilation and reporting against financial objectives •Effective negotiation and conflict resolution experience and skills •LEAN/Six Sigma Green or Black Belt, or documented experience in championing large and complex projects is an advantage •Requirement of trust and honesty in the handling of finances as per the National Credit Act Amendment 19 Standard Job Requirements •Driver’s license code 8 •Travel as and when required by the business TPT ROC Requirements: •Relevant qualification (NQF 6/7) •12 yrs relevant and solid experience with at least 8 yrs at managerial level or specialist experience.

Position Purpose

To provide the Senior Engineer (Traction and Locomotive Integration Technology Technology) with engineering expertise in support of Locomotive Data Systems (Specification, front and back-end software Development, and maintenance of locomotive data systems) so that Transnet can provide a sustainable, safe, predictable and affordable transport service to its clients.

 

Position Outputs

• Develop a comprehensive locomotive data systems strategy, inclusive of: • Locomotive data transmission protocol design and specification, • Migration of the Locomotive Data System Architecture to a Microservices architecture, • Continuous monitoring and technical support on all data collection devices, • Optimising server configurations, resource utilisation and system parameters to maximise performance. • Software development, to support the following functions: • Continuous data driven locomotive condition monitoring by various component VITs, • Development of techniques and algorithms for the purpose of assisting Transnet with predictive maintenance, • Develop Back-office locomotive data system software (Database management, back-end software, Data visualisation dashboards (front end), continuous locomotive condition monitoring, locomotive energy management system, Critical locomotive fault alerts messages), • Analyse and understand existing codebase, including its architecture, dependencies, and functionality. • Design, acceptance, and Continuous Condition Monitoring of data transmission devices: • To develop locomotive specification in line with technological advancements in the railway industry., • Perform failure analysis and investigations on components/ equipment and systems associated with Locomotive Data Systems and Performance. • Perform fault data analysis: Pinpoint potential problem areas to conduct technical investigations and to propose solutions, • Data Governance, Data Security and Cyber Security: • Ensure compliance to Data Governance and Data Security, • Ensure OT cyber security road map is implemented and continuous improvements to LDS cyber security. • Data Mining to enable Big data analytics insight and extraction: • Data frames, • Time series analytics to deduce the seasonality and stationarity in relation to the some of the failures on the locomotives, • To oversee and maintain version control systems (like GIT) ensuring efficient collaboration and code management. Responsibilities include: • Managing repositories, • DevOps and setting up CI/CD pipelines.

 

Qualifications and Experience

1. B.Sc. Eng. In Electrical / Electronics/ Computer Engineering 2. Min 5 years’ experience in the railway industry. 3 years’ experience in general software development is advantageous. 3. Experience using the following programming languages would be advantageous: • Java SE/EE • Angular • JavaScript • PHP • HTML/css • Python 4. Experience in Predictive Modelling, AI, Machine learning, Data visualisation, data integration techniques, Python, Data frames and Statistical analysis would be advantageous. 5. Experience with design, application, testing and configurations of TCP/IP or UDP/IP Data Communication protocols
