Description

Job Purpose

Designing, developing, and optimising welding processes, procedures, and systems to ensure structural integrity, compliance, and production efficiency in a manufacturing environment. Develops and maintains Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and ensures adherence to standards such as ASME, EN, and ISO 3834. It integrates mechanical engineering expertise to evaluate and improve machine performance, reliability, and equipment suitability. Also oversees quality control systems, weld inspection processes, and compliance assurance in collaboration with production and QC teams. In addition, it drives the implementation of advanced welding technologies, including weld map development and process digitalisation. Overall, the position ensures safe, reliable, and cost-effective manufacturing through continuous improvement and engineering excellence

Job Requirements

1. Welding Engineering & Fabrication. 

• Develop, qualify, and maintain welding procedures (WPS/PQR) in accordance with standards (ISO, AWS, ASME where applicable) 

• Define welding parameters for MIG, TIG, MMA, SAW, and automated welding systems 

• Ensure weld quality compliance through NDT coordination (UT, RT, MT, PT) 

• Troubleshoot welding defects (porosity, cracking, distortion, lack of fusion) 

• Support fabrication processes including jigs, fixtures, and assembly methods

     2. Mechanical Engineering & Machine Performance  

• Evaluate and optimize machine performance and utilisation across welding, machining, and fabrication equipment 

• Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment failures and production downtime

• Improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through engineering interventions

• Analyse machine capability, cycle times, and bottlenecks 

Support installation, commissioning, and validation of new machinery


3. Equipment Reliability & Maintenance Engineering Support.

• Work closely with maintenance teams on preventive and predictive maintenance strategies 

• Perform failure mode analysis (FMEA / RCM principles) on critical equipment

• Improve equipment reliability through engineering redesigns and upgrades 

• Evaluate spare parts criticality and lifecycle performance 

Reduce unplanned downtime through structured reliability programs


     4. Technical Evaluation of Machines & Equipment 

• Assess and approve new equipment specifications and procurement technical evaluations 

• Conduct machine capability assessments and benchmarking 

• Evaluate supplier technical proposals for welding, machining, and fabrication equipment

• Verify installation compliance and acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) 

Ensure machines meet safety, productivity, and quality requirements


    5. Continuous Improvement & Manufacturing Excellence 

• Lead Lean Manufacturing and Kaizen initiatives 

• Drive cost reduction projects (material, consumables, energy, downtime) 

• Improve welding cycle times and machining efficiency 

• Implement standardised work and process optimisation 

• Support digitalisation initiatives (data collection, machine monitoring)


6. Quality Assurance & Compliance 

• Ensure compliance with ISO 3834, ISO 9001, ASME, AWS codes (as applicable)

• Support internal and external audits 

• Manage welding traceability and documentation systems 

• Work closely with QC engineers on inspection standards and approvals


7. Cross-Functional Collaboration 

• Work with Planning, Production, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering teams 

• Provide technical training and mentorship to welding and machine operators 

• Support project engineering during new product introduction (NPI)

Description

Job Purpose

To lead and provide support to the Necsa research environment, to execute and manage larger scale and complex projects with multiple specialists, support personnel and team members. To collaborate closely with other related Groups in Necsa. 

In the BLC environment, the main purpose of the job is to provide technical leadership and steer projects to ensure operational availability of the research instruments and their application in materials research. The job requires an in-depth knowledge that underlines the multi-disciplinary scientific disciplines within which the above are relevant. This requires a well-developed knowledge base on the principles of neutron and X-ray scattering and imaging, understanding of the instrumentation requirements and their value addition in material sciences. The incumbent will also take the lead in ensuring that the facilities are widely accessible and used by the scientific and industrial communities.

An important aspect of this job is to define proposed solution approaches and translate them into project plans. It is expected that the incumbent keeps abreast of and contribute to latest developments in neutron scattering and x-ray modalities, as well as instrumentation developments and applications.

 

 Key Performance Areas:

 Knowledge Dissemination 

  • Direct, lead and guide technically specialised research and innovation in the unit toward the achievement of departmental objectives and key performance indicators (Publications, Substantial research reports and Conference contributions).
  • Oversee and promote knowledge creation and dissemination by setting and managing appropriate KPI targets for staff.
  • Ensure that research output from the unit/section maintains impact and quality relevant at National and International level.

SHEQ and other audits

  • Oversee and manage an ingrained Safety Culture in the unit/section.
  • Perform Discipline Manager Duties for responsible facilities to ensure compliance with SHEQ, NNR and SAHPRA regulations.
  • Ensure that quality, safety, licensing and regulatory guidelines relevant to the function of the unit/section are reflected in work procedures, and are adhered to.
  • Manage the implementation of audit findings, non-conformances and corrective actions using the Necsa EMP.

Financial Management

  • Compile the unit/section budget, for approval by higher management and manage the bottom-line of the Group in line with the Department targets.
  • Effectively manage delegated financial authority and conform to delegation limits.
  • Manage income targets and expenditure in line with approved budgets, and report progress and variances on a regular basis as required (including forecasting).

Description

 Job Purpose

• The Manufacturing Coordinator (Project Coordinator) is responsible for the end-to-end coordination, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure of manufacturing engineering projects. 

• The role ensures that all projects are delivered on time, within scope, within budget, and in compliance with quality, safety, and operational requirements. 

• Acts as the central coordination point between engineering, production, procurement, quality, and external stakeholders to ensure seamless project delivery from initiation to commissioning and handover.

Job Requirements

1. Project Planning & Initiation. 

• Support the definition of project scope, objectives, deliverables, and success criteria 

• Develop detailed project plans, timelines, milestones, and resource requirements 

• Coordinate feasibility studies, site assessments, and pre-project evaluations 

• Assist in business case preparation and project approval documentation 

• Establish project governance structures and communication plans

• Develop project documentations e.g. BOM, QCP etc. and maintain Project File.

• Request of quotations for material, Items and / or services. Placement of orders on the Necsa workflow system

     2. Project Execution Coordination 

• Coordinate all project activities across engineering, production, procurement, and contractors 

• Ensure alignment of project execution with approved plans, scope, and budget 

• Schedule and facilitate project meetings, progress reviews, and site coordination sessions 

• Track deliverables against project milestones and escalate deviations timeously 

• Manage project documentation and version control


3. Stakeholder Management.

• Act as the primary liaison between internal departments and external suppliers/contractors 

• Communicate project progress, risks, and issues to stakeholders 

• Ensure clear alignment between engineering design, production requirements, and operational readiness 

• Coordinate approvals, sign-offs, and decision-making processes


     4. Monitoring, Control & Reporting

• Monitor project progress against scope, cost, quality, and schedule baselines 

• Maintain project dashboards, status reports, and KPI tracking systems 

• Identify risks, delays, and bottlenecks and implement corrective actions 

• Support project audits and compliance checks 

• Ensure adherence to project governance standards and procedures


    5. Procurement & Resource Coordination

• Coordinate procurement of materials, equipment, and services for projects 

• Track delivery timelines and supplier performance 

• Ensure availability of resources (labour, equipment, contractors) as per project plan

• Liaise with supply chain to prevent delays and shortages


6. Quality, Safety & Compliance

• Ensure all project activities comply with safety regulations and company standards 

• Support risk assessments and method statements for project execution 

• Coordinate quality inspections and acceptance testing 

• Ensure compliance with ISO, ASME, engineering, and manufacturing standards


7. Project Closure

• Ensure successful handover of completed projects to operations/production teams 

• Verify completion of all outstanding deliverables and actions

• Compile project close-out reports, lessons learned, and final documentation 

• Declaring invoices and IWO’s for payment

• Ensure financial and contractual project closure


8. Continuous Improvement

• Identify process inefficiencies in project execution and recommend improvements 

• Support implementation of project management best practices and tools 

• Contribute to standardisation of project coordination processes across manufacturing


9. Safety

• Comply with Necsa's health and safety requirements and lead by example and attitude. 

• BBS observations and safety incidents. 

• Promote a Nuclear Safety Culture within AM

• Attend Quality/Safety training / awareness sessions and on-the-job training as scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Artisan (machining/boiler making/welding)/ Grade 12 with relevant trade seal Preferably Tertiary Technical OR

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering OR Diploma in Operations Management• General computer literate to at least intermediate level (Windows, MS Project, MS Word and Excel)


Minimum Experience: Minimum 3-5 Years in technical operations experience in Manufacturing or Fabrication activities
