🚧 What is SANRAL?

SANRAL is the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited. It is a government-owned company that manages South Africa’s national roads.

They believe education is key to the country’s future. That’s why they offer bursaries to students who do well in school.



📚 Who Can Apply?

UNDERGRADUATE

Applicants must be entering their first year of study in 2027 in one of the approved fields of study and must have obtained a minimum average of 70% in their latest academic results.

  • BSc or BEng in Civil Engineering
  • Public Procurement or Supply Chain Management
  • Computer Science or Information Systems

POSTGRADUATE

Applicants must be enrolling for a postgraduate qualification at NQF Level 8 in 2027 in one of the approved fields of study and must have achieved a minimum average of 60% in their most recent academic results

Field of Study:

  • property development and management [real estate and/or commercial properties]
  • Commercial property and investment
  • Property Asset Management
  • Property valuation
  • Town and regional planning (incl. GIS)
  • Finance or financial management Property law, commercial law, contract law

DO YOU QUALIFY TO APPLY FOR A BURSARY

  • Matriculants need a 70% overall average.
  • Postgraduates need a 60% overall average.
  • Bursaries are available to students who will be in their 1st year in their undergraduate studies in 2027.
  • Awards will be made in line with SANRAL’s Employment Equity (EE) Transformation Policy objectives.
  • The applicant’s financial situation will be taken into consideration.
  • Applicants with other bursaries will be disqualified.
  • Bursary recipients will have the opportunity to apply for on-the-job training.

 

 

MINIMUM BURSARY REQUIREMENTS    

To qualify for a bursary, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen under the age of 35.
  • Meet the academic requirements for your chosen course.
  • Achieve a stipulated academic average:
  • Matriculants need a 70% overall average. 
  • Postgraduates need a 60% overall average. 
  • Study at an approved South African tertiary institution (privately-owned universities will not be considered).
  • Intend to enrol for full-time study (not part-time or distance learning).
  • Complete an application form in full and include all necessary supporting documents.

Attention applicants! All applications are carefully reviewed and verified, and any misrepresentation of information could result in your bursary being cancelled, even if this is discovered after the award has been made. For a smooth verification process, please make sure that all application materials are accurate and complete.

Note: The course you indicate on your bursary application form must match the course you are accepted for at your chosen tertiary institution.

LETTER OF MOTIVATION

CERTIFIED DOCUMENT COPIES

  • For applicants in high school: Results from Term 1 and 2
  • For applicants at tertiary level: Full academic record from current tertiary institution
  • Proof of tertiary application
  • Your ID document or birth certificate (you must be a South African citizen)
  • ID documents of your parents/legal guardian

PROOF OF RESIDENCE

  • Water and electricity bill from the local council in the name of your parents/legal guardian

  • PROOF OF INCOME SHOULD NOT BE OLDER THAN 3 MONTHS OF SUBMISSION
  • ALL COPIES SHOULD BE CERTIFIED AS TRUE COPIES WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF SUBMISSION
  • IF SUPPORTED BY A GUARDIAN, THE DEATH CERTIFICATE OF PARENT(S) OR A LETTER FROM SOCIAL SERVICES SHOULD BE INCLUDED
  • INCLUDE PROOF OF REGISTRATION OF SIBLING (S) STUDYING AT TERTIARYINSTITUTION
  • IF YOUR FAMILY IS FOSTERING A CHILD, PLEASE INCLUDE COURTDECREE
  • MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF APPLICANT PARENTS, IF MARRIED, MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE OF APPLICANT

BURSARY FAQS

To help you better understand the application process, we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions. Please take the time to read through them carefully.

Q: Will every learner who applies receive a bursary?

A: No. SANRAL receives many bursary applications from students across South Africa and, unfortunately, we have only a limited number of bursaries to give out each year. But don't let that discourage you! If you are motivated to excel in your studies, you should still apply for this opportunity.

Q: How does SANRAL select the bursary recipients?

A: The bursary is awarded based on a combination of academic merit and financial need. SANRAL considers its annual and strategic plans, policies and budget when making selections. The External Bursary Committee will assess applications.

Q: How will I know if my bursary application was successful?

A: SANRAL will contact successful candidates only – once the final selection process has been completed. If you have not received any communication within three months of the application closing date on 30 September 2026, it means that your application was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, we cannot provide individual feedback on unsuccessful applications.

Q: Does receiving a SANRAL bursary guarantee employment with SANRAL?

A: No. Receiving a bursary is not a guarantee of future employment opportunities with SANRAL.

 

Remember! Even if you don't receive a SANRAL bursary this year, you can always re-apply next year.

 

 

SUPPORTING DOCUMENT GUIDE

The below are the required documents to support any online application submission;

  1. Letter of Motivation - Tell us a bit about yourself and why you would like to receive a SANRAL bursary (1 page).
  2. Certified copies of birth certificates or ID’s of all members of the family.
  3. Certified copy of death certificate if applicable.
  4. Proof of legal guardian if applicable.
  5. Copy of parent’s full divorce agreement if applicable.
  6. Single parents must provide us with a letter from Home Affairs confirming marital status and an affidavit stating knowledge about information regarding another parent.
  7. Unemployed siblings, <18yrs and not studying, must provide us with a letter from Department of Labor.
  8. Sibling studying at FET College or at a tertiary institution must provide us with a proof of registration.
  9. Marriage certificate of applicant’s parents or if Applicant is married his/her copy of Marriage certificate.
  10. If your parents are married but separated, please attach legal documents as proof of separation or report from Department of Social Services.

IF PARENT/GUARDIAN/SPOUSE ARE EMPLOYED

  1. Attach salary/wage slips of parent(s)/guardian(s)/spouse.

IF PARENT/GUARDIAN/SPOUSE ARE AN INFORMAL TRADER/HAWKER

  1. Proof of income.
  2. Proof of lease agreement if renting accommodation.

IF PARENT/GUARDIAN/SPOUSE ARE EARNING COMMISSION

  1. IRP5, IT3 and IT12 (last 2years).

IF PARENT/GUARDIAN/SPOUSE ARE OWN OR ARE MEMBERS OF A CC/PTY (LTD) AND/OR SOLE PROPRIETOR (OWNER)

  1. An Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow Statement, IT14 – Tax return for business (last 2years).
  2. IT 12 – Tax return for the individual (last 2 years).
  3. IT3 – Income Tax Certificate from the Bank (last 2 years).

IF PARENT/GUARDIAN/SPOUSE ARE UNEMPLOYED

  1. Official letter from the Department of Labour/ Affidavit proving unemployment status.
  2. Proof of how the family is supported.
  3. Affidavit.
