MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To identify, initiate, investigate, research, plan, and record relevant material from stories that are complex in nature and to produce news reports in isiZulu and English that are fair, accurate, and compelling to target audiences.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Initiate and cover stories as assigned or commissioned in isiZulu and English.
- Provide quality scripts and clear voice-overs, including on-air broadcasts.
- Investigate and break stories and follow them through to the final product before broadcast.
- Maintain special focus areas (such as crime, etc).
- Give informative and well-researched input to live Radio Current Affairs and TV News programmes and debates, package stories for News and Current Affairs programmes, and do live crossings into News Bulletins.
- Check facts, accuracy, and quality of stories.
- Set up interviews and lead discussions for broadcast, including crossovers.
- Meet story deadlines.
- Keep abreast of news events/developments.
- Obtain broadcast-quality audio-visuals using relevant recording equipment.
- Adhere to South Africa’s Constitution, all broadcasting and other legislation, ICASA’s licence conditions and regulations, the BCCSA and Press Council codes of conduct, including rulings, the SABC Editorial Policies, News and Current Affairs style-guide, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), etc.
REQUIREMENTS:
- National Diploma / Degree in Journalism or Media Studies or equivalent qualification (NQF 6 / 7)
- 5 years’ experience in general News and Current Affairs reporting
- Fluent in isiZulu and English
- Understand legislation and regulations impacting broadcasting
- Sound understanding of current trends in the social, economic, and political environment
- Computer literacy
- Ability to interact and manage different role-players / stakeholders at various levels

Main purpose of the position:
To produce and deliver compelling and incisive high quality television news content in line SABC News public mandate objectives
Key Accountabilities:
- Write, translate and edit scripts and video clips according to the house style.
- Check the facts of stories from the various news sources to ensure accurate and factual product.
- Edit text and copy from field and wire and ensure it is short and crisp
- Voice reports
- Copy taste in order to identify stories for use on TV news bulletins
- Liaise with reporters and search wires for breaking stories, fresh angles and updates on stories
- Advise the Bulletin Editor on new and developing story angles.
- Tailor story to allotted time within the bulletin

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
To develop, edit and support the production of SABC News’ multimedia content in English and compile related features / special reports to increase content engagement and audience growth
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Conceptualise, brainstorm and produce multimedia content in English for SABC News’ digital / online platforms
- Compile features and special reports for SABC News’ online and social media platforms
- Research stories and potential newsmakers / interviewees through various news mediums
- Create various forms of multimedia news, data stories and features, including infographics, digital news cards, listicles, explainers, animation and relevant audiovisual content etc
- Assist SABC News with graphic design projects and daily assignments, such as modifying images and creating designs for distinctive features
- Write and produce original stories / content from pre- to post-production, on and off the field, such as mobile journalism stories in the form of packages, podcasts, voiceovers and various forms of visualisation tools
- Provide digital and multimedia support to all SABC News platforms
- Keep abreast of the latest news, developments, trends and upcoming events

REQUIREMENTS:

To be the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s ‘distribution specialist contact’ and co-ordinator, between Sentech/ICASA/Telkom/Industry and the South African Broadcasting Corporation, continually promoting and enhancing the interest of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, in order to ensure optimal service delivery for the SABC on existing and future needs and requirements.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
BUSINESS OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY
- Shaping and influencing the development of Spectrum Policies and Regulations in favour of the SABC
- Providing strategic directions of the National Preparatory Working Group of International Telecommunication Union - Radiocommunications agenda items relating to broadcasting and spectrum management
- Leading signal interference resolutions cases for TVOB, TV and Radio departments
- Apply engineering planning and coordination procedures to spectrum management to support SABC’s various applications for licences at ICASA
- Knowledge of spectrum usage and availability in the Bands
- Participating in band planning exercises in South Africa and providing strategic directions with the aim to protecting SABC’s spectrum usage
- Take responsibility for the technical contact with the ICASA, Telkom and Sentech, in order to ensure optimal delivery on SABC technical needs and requirements.
- Liaise with TV and Radio and relevant technology business units, in order to ensure optimal delivery on transmission technology needs and requirements.
- Liaise with ICASA technical staff, in order to clarify and resolve technical issues and enhance the ICASA
- Efficiently and accurately manage a database of existing transmitters and future planned expansions.
- Ensure optimal alignment between technology and the radio stations and TV channels needs and requirements including contribution links.
- Manage and audit the technical performance of the transmitters and satellite networks used by the SABC.
- Monitor the availability of the transmitter and satellite networks and consolidate an accurate monthly network breakdown report, detailing: total lost broadcast time; total lost broadcast time per programme; graphical representation of hours lost per month, to indicate trends.
- Identification of any transmitter site showing abnormal down time.
- Provide accurate information on census figures, coverage maps and self-help stations.
- Provide strategic direction in terms of optimal utilisation of technology, in order to continually enhance and improve efficiencies and quality of radio and TV processes and systems
STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT
- Represent and present SABC’s interest in the world Radio conferences in line with approved technology roadmap on radio frequency and equipment standardization.
- Management of cross border interference and represent and promote the SABC’s interests in the external world by building long-term alliances and partnerships with suppliers and industry organizations to achieve the SABC’s strategic objectives.
- Promote the interests of the SABC by taking part in industry groups such as NAB and SADIBA and help keep the SABC at the leading edge in relation to South African and international Contribution and Distribution arrangements.
- Responsible for actively managing relationships with all the SABC’s Contribution and Distribution and linking suppliers, including Sentech and satellite platform operators
