REQUIREMENTS FOR HOLDING AN OFFICE OF SHERIFF:
Applicants must be: a South African citizen or has been lawfully admitted to the Republic for permanent residence and is ordinarily resident in the Republic; a fit and proper person; able to demonstrate the financial and other ability required to establish and operate a sheriff ’s office; is competent to conduct the business of sheriff and has at least :
· An appropriate post grade 12 qualification, i.e. a certificate, diploma and/or degree obtained from a recognized Tertiary or Higher Learning institution that enhances the knowledge of an applicant in the business of a sheriff and/ or in legal and court processes that was duly obtained by the Applicant after the completion of a grade 12 certificate (or due to an age exemption), will be considered an appropriate post grade 12 qualification. In the case of age exemption, proof of such exemption must be obtained from the Department of Education and in respect of any international certificate, diploma and/ or degree proof must be obtained from the South African Qualification Authority.
· An understanding of civil law.
· Knowledge and an understanding of the relevant aspects of the Constitution of South Africa, Insolvency Act, Magistrates’ Court Act, State Liability Act, Prescription Act, Criminal Procedure Act, Sheriffs Act, Security by Means of Movable Property Act, Labour Relations Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Maintenance Act, Rental Housing Act, National Credit Act, Consumer Protection Act, Superior Courts Act, Rules of Superior and Lower Courts, Rules of the Supreme Court of Appeal. A sheriff is not an employee of the Department and generates his/ her income from the service and the execution of court documents in terms of the prescribed tariffs. The applicant must demonstrate the potential ability to establish and operate an office to conduct business relating the service of summonses and other court processes; the execution of warrants of execution and ejectment interdicts and garnishee orders; the making of inventories on the processing of warrants of execution; the provision of returns of service; the holding of execution auctions; and the keeping of a trust account of a sheriff. A person appointed as a sheriff may not perform or engage in any remunerative work outside the office of a sheriff without the approval of the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development. The person appointed as sheriff cannot perform the functions of a sheriff unless he/she has been issued with a Fidelity Fund Certificate, issued by the South African Board for Sheriffs.
Preference will be given to applicants whose appointments will promote equitable demographic representation and inclusiveness by race, gender, disability or any of the constitutionally recognized grounds.
All applications must be completed on the Form 1 (J743) and must be accompanied by:
(a) a curriculum vitae of the applicant;
(b) a certified copy of the identity document of the applicant;
(c) certified copies of all educational qualifications of the applicant;
(d) certified copies of certificates of service or, if not available, an affidavit by the applicant in respect of previous periods of employment rendered by him or her;
(e) testimonials from 2 previous employers of applicant, if available;
(f) the nature and history of any past or present business undertaking, occupation or trade of the applicant;
(g) the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two references;
(h) an affidavit regarding previous convictions and sequestrations, if any;
(i) an affidavit with the necessary supporting documents, if applicable, that an applicant has the financial ability to establish and operate an office of sheriff, including a list of all assets and liabilities of such an applicant; and
(j) a certified copy of his or her driver’s licence, if the applicant has a valid driver’s licence.
Applications must be submitted on Form 1 (J743) obtainable from the following websites: www.justice.gov.za and www.sheriffs.org.za. Forms may also be requested from the court Manager at the Magistrates’ Office.
It must be noted that where an applicant applies for more than one of the above vacant sheriff offices then Part B of Form 1 makes provision for the applicant to list three vacant sheriff offices within a specific province thereon. If the applicant is applying for vacant sheriff offices in other provinces, then separate Form 1 applications will have to be submitted in lieu of the relevant vacant sheriff ’s offices within such province.
All applications are to be hand delivered in the application boxes to be placed at at the Head Office of the South African Board for Sheriffs (SABFS) situated at 25 Thornhill Office Park, Midrand, Gauteng Province (Head Office). OR submitted by email to sheriffsvacancies@sheriffs.org.za
All applications hand delivered at the SABFS Head or Regional Office, should also be submitted electronically to sheriffsvacancies@sheriffs.org.za on or before the closing date of 2 November 2026.
Applications that are not completed correctly and in line with the requirements listed above will not be considered.
The Minister of Justice & Constitutional Development reserves the right not to fill a sheriff’s office that has herein been advertised as a vacant sheriff’s office.
Further, should you not receive an invitation within three (3) months to attend an interview herein then it can be deemed that your application was not successful.

COMPLIANCE MANAGER
Duration: Permanent

The South African Board for Sheriffs (SABFS) is responsible for the maintenance of the esteem of, the enhancement of the status of, and the improvement of the standard of training of and functions performed by sheriffs, in a manner that enhances access to justice.
The Compliance Manager is responsible for ensuring effective and efficient compliance with applicable legislation, policies and procedures, while providing strategic and operational oversight of the Compliance Department.
This position reports to the Acting Executive Manager
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
The below highlights the key areas of focus but is not limited to:
Overseeing compliance with the legal obligations applicable to sheriffs in terms of the Sheriffs Act and relevant legislation.
Managing and monitoring the Legal Obligations Phase 1 and Phase 2 processes.
Ensuring that effective systems, processes and controls are in place to support compliance activities.
Overseeing the appointment of sheriffs, acting sheriffs, deputy sheriffs and ad hoc sheriffs.
Coordinating and overseeing the handover processes for newly appointed, retiring, removed or outgoing sheriffs.
Working effectively with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJ&CD), Provincial Advisory Committees, Magistrates' Courts and other relevant stakeholders on appointments and handovers.
Overseeing the retirement process for sheriffs and facilitating the filling of vacant sheriff positions.
Ensuring accurate and up-to-date maintenance of the SABFS national sheriff database and related compliance records.
Monitoring and reporting on sheriff statistics and compliance information.
Ensuring SABFS compliance with applicable legislation and maintaining appropriate compliance registers and records.
Managing and overseeing the administration of requests for information in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA).
Monitoring PAIA requests, applicable deadlines, investigations, recommendations and responses.
Preparing and reviewing compliance reports for management and relevant committees.
Developing and managing the Compliance Department's operational plans and budget.
Ensuring that the Compliance Department is adequately staffed, trained and effectively managed.
Planning, organising, directing and monitoring the work of the Compliance Department.
Identifying and escalating compliance risks, delays, irregularities and areas of non-compliance.
Providing guidance, supervision and support to Compliance staff.
Performing any other duties reasonably related to the position

TRAINING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

The South African Board for Sheriffs (SABFS) is responsible for the maintenance of the esteem of, the enhancement of the status of, and the improvement of the standard of training of and functions performed by sheriffs, in a manner that enhances access to justice.
The Training & Communications Manager is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction in the areas of training, development and communications to support the SABFS in achieving its legislated mandate.
The role is responsible for coordinating and implementing relevant development interventions for sheriffs, deputies and SABFS employees, promoting professionalism and transformation within the sheriffs’ industry, and developing and implementing effective communication strategies that support the organisation’s mandate and stakeholder engagement.
This position reports to the Acting Executive Manager
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
The below highlights the key areas of focus but is not limited to:
Developing and implementing the SABFS training and development strategy, policies, procedures and systems.
Coordinating training and development programmes for sheriffs, deputies and SABFS employees.
Conducting training needs analyses and aligning training programmes with skills audit findings and organisational requirements.
Developing and coordinating induction and continuous professional development programmes for sheriffs.
Preparing and managing the training budget and securing relevant funding, including SASSETA funding.
Developing and submitting the annual Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report.
Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness and impact of training initiatives and providing regular reports to management and the Board.
Supporting industry transformation and promoting professionalism within the sheriffs’ industry.
Developing and implementing the SABFS communications and public relations strategy.
Providing strategic direction on communication policies, processes, branding and stakeholder engagement.
Managing the SABFS brand, website/intranet content and institutional communications.
Managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including relevant government and industry stakeholders.
Leading and managing the Training, Communications and Uniform functions, including performance management, coaching and staff development.
Driving the implementation of the SABFS Uniform Policy and ensuring that sheriffs and deputies are appropriately fitted with uniforms.
Managing departmental projects, budgets, records, reporting and compliance requirements.
Ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements relating to skills development, employment equity, labour and organisational practices.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
An appropriate Degree or Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Development (HRD) or a related field.
Minimum 8 years’ experience in Training & Development and/or Communications, with at least 3 years’ experience at middle-management level.
Valid driver’s licence.
Proven experience in developing and implementing training and development programmes.
Experience in managing teams and stakeholder relationships.
Experience in developing WSPs, training reports and working with relevant SETA requirements will be an advantage.
