DIRECTOR: ADVANCEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS (1 Post)

The University is seeking a charismatic, highly literate and strategically astute professional to serve as Director: Advancement and Communications and provide visionary leadership across the University’s advancement and communications portfolio. The incumbent will be required to lead this function with a focus on increasing alternative revenue streams, advancing strategic Alumni Relations, enhancing brand positioning and anchoring, and strengthening the University’s reputation as an institution that values open, transparent communication and meaningful stakeholder relationships. 

 

The incumbent will provide strategic leadership for fundraising and philanthropy, alumni relations, stakeholder engagement, corporate and strategic partnerships, communications, marketing, brand management and institutional reputation, ensuring an integrated approach that advances the University’s strategic priorities, financial sustainability and institutional positioning. 

 

The incumbent will report to the Executive Director: Special Projects and Stakeholder Management and will be expected to meet the prescribed requirements including qualifications, experience, competencies and performance requirements,while delivering on the key performance areas outlined below. 

 

MINUMUM REQUIREMENTS 

·       Master’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or related disciplines, or a Master’s degree in a business field supported by an Undergraduate degree in one of the disciplines 

·       10 years’ combined experience in Advancement, Marketing, and Communication environment. (exposure to all fields is essential) of which last five (5) years must be in a leadership position. 

·       At least five (5) years demonstrated experience in advancement, fundraising, philanthropy and third stream income generation. 

·       Professional affiliation or registration with a recognized advancement communications, marketing, body (e.g., PRISA, CASE) will be advantageous 

·       An established network and strong relationships with donors, alumni, media, corporate partners, government and higher education stakeholders will be an advantage 

·       Proven experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of integrated advancement, fundraising, alumni relations and communications strategies 

·       Demonstrated and measurable success in fundraising and resource mobilisation initiatives, resulting in increased institutional revenue, donor support and/or strategic partnerships 

·       Proven track record of leading and securing support for philanthropic programmes and initiatives 

·       Demonstrated ability to influence, engage and provide strategic advice to diverse internal and external stakeholders at senior and executive levels 

·       Strong technological proficiency, with current knowledge of digital media platforms, emerging communication technologies and ICT applications, and the ability to leverage these effectively to advance institutional objectives 

·       Experience in a higher education context will be an added advantage 

·       Valid South African driver’s license

·       Develop and implement the University Advancement Strategy and annual implementation plans 

·       Translate institutional priorities into fundable and investable opportunities

·       Review and update the Advancement Strategy in response to institutional and external developments

 

• Fundraising and Philanthropy 

·       Develops compelling funding proposals, cases for support, campaign propositions and donor investment opportunities in partnership with academic, research and support units 

·       Pursue strategic partnerships, sponsorships, naming opportunities, endowments and other sustainable third-stream income mechanisms 

·       Develop and implement a diversified, fundraising and philanthropy plan with approved priorities, income targets, donor pipelines, and performance measures 

·       Develops and implements the University’s integrated Advancement and Marketing strategy 

·       Aligns portfolio priorities with the University’s strategic plan and institutional objectives 

·       Translates institutional priorities into measurable advancement, marketing, fundraising and stakeholder outcomes 

·       Identifies opportunities to strengthen the University’s competitive positioning and market presence 

·       Advises Executive Management and Council committees on advancement, marketing, reputation and stakeholder matters 

·       Lead transformational fundraising initiatives; personally engage with high-value prospects investors and donors 

·       Monitor and report on fundraising performance, donor pipeline, income generation and resource mobilization to Executive Management and governance structures 

·       Reports on donor pipeline, commitments, secured funding and fundraising targets 

·       Identifies and mitigates risks associated with fundraising and donor relationships 

·       Mobilizing philanthropic and third-stream resources to support institutional priorities, ensuring ethical fundraising practices, and fostering a culture of giving among stakeholders and alumni 

 

• Alumni Relations 

·       Stays abreast of latest developments, trends and best practices relating to alumni relations and advancement 

·       Lead annual Alumni Relations projects, programmes and initiatives aligned to institutional priorities 

·       Strengthens alumni networks and strategic relationships with key alumni and other stakeholders 

·       Collaborates with senior internal stakeholders to identify opportunities for alumni involvement in institutional initiatives 

·       Monitors and maintains the accuracy, integrity and currency of alumni records and databases to support effective engagement and relationship management 

·       Facilitates strategic partnerships and initiatives that enhance alumni engagement and institutional advancement 

·       Identifies, qualifies and cultivates alumni prospects for annual giving, fundraising and philanthropic support, including referring potential major-gift prospects 

·       Sets annual Advancement and Alumni Relations goals, priorities and projects 

 

• Communications and Marketing 

·       Stays abreast with latest developments and technologies relating to Communications and Media 

·       Leads the Communications strategy and plan, collaborating with senior internal stakeholders in crafting and capturing a consistent, clear message of the institution’s culture, mission, values, and goals 

·       Translating the institution’s message (vision, mission and values) into tangible and executable plans, and targeting communications differently to different stakeholders 

·       Setting measurable goals and objectives for the communication strategy, and drafting plans that coincide with key events on the institution’s calendar 

·       Remaining abreast of achievements, research initiatives and personas who represent the institution’s values, and remains closely involved with the institution’s impact and key initiatives 

·       Manages and monitors the implementation of communication strategy and plans, including the effectiveness of communication and goal achievement 

·       Manages the student enquiry function in close collaboration with academic administration stakeholders and institutional planning 

·       Manages media events 

·       Mitigates risk to brand damage on complex communications issues 

·       Manages the student radio station 

·       Manages all institutional print media, such as newsletters, annual reports, alumni communications and marketing material 

·       Writing concept documents, briefs and plans 

·       Represents the institution on public platforms and media events 

·       Maintains communications policies, procedures and standards (for both print and digital media) 

·       Educates and informs institutional stakeholders on communications standards, policies and procedures 

·       Manages all institutional print media, such as newsletters, annual reports, alumni communications & marketing material 

·       Gains approvals for press releases 

·       Maintains communications policies, procedures and standards (for both print and digital media) 

·       Monitors that licensing, usage clauses, subscriptions and copy right legislation are adhered to 

·       Reports on media statistics and metrics 

 

• Reputational and Branding Management 

·       Remains abreast of new developments in the field of Marketing, and drafts and gains approval for an integrated marketing & branding strategy 

·       Commissions insights into SMU’s position in the higher education landscape, and gaining input on competitors 

·       Proposes changes to and maintains policies and procedures for the marketing function in the institution 

·       Proposes channels for advertising with the supporting budget and gains approval 

·       Manages the Marketing and Branding function, including planning and gaining approval for marketing campaigns, and managing service providers o Develops branding and corporate identity plans for all University campaigns 

·       Collaborates with internal stakeholders to maintain the image and brand of the institution, including managing the institution’s trademarks, copy rights and related compliance; new and existing signage on infrastructure, recreational facilities, etc for quality, standards adherence and image 

·       Manages the procurement and distribution of promotional items 

·       Commissions specialist providers for the making of video’s and other promotional materials 

·       Works with and leads dynamic team projects, maintaining professional relationships with stakeholders 

·       Monitors and controls marketing expenditure prudently 

·       Monitors the effectiveness of campaigns, advertising and other marketing events through analysis of metrics 

·       Monitors the appropriate use and care of the institutions marketing materials/stock 

·       In collaboration with Information Technology function, monitors that e-mail footers and document templates are standard and up to date 

·       Reports on marketing drives/campaign statistics, outcomes and costs 

 

• Student Attraction 

·       Plans collaboratively with internal stakeholders to facilitate student-centric attraction strategies 

·       Engages with student bodies to determine needs and gain input 

·       Plans strategies for attraction of prospective students 

·       Arranging for marketing materials, such as stands, models, displays, graphics etc, for shows where SMU is actively marketed 

·       Collaborates with internal stakeholders for the planning and execution of open days and school visits 

·       Assists with planning regarding major institutional events on the annual calendar, such as graduation and other ceremonies 

·       Arranges for provision of supporting marketing materials, brochures, print media, programs, and other items during such events 

·       Collaborates with the Student Affairs function regarding marketing support to enrich the student experience 

·       Collaborates with the Internationalisation function to analyse needs and provide communications & marketing support in support of institutional goals 

·       Puts metrics in place to monitor goal achievement for student attraction 

·       Monitors plan implementation and prudent expenditure of budgets 

·       Resolves complex queries 

·       Continually and proactively updates plans as needs and requirements change 

·       Drafts reports on student attraction initiatives and success (inclusive of costs) 

·       Drafts standard management reports and metrics for student attraction goal achievement per category of student (local, foreign, post graduate, doctorates, etc)

DEPUTY DIRECTOR: HR SPECIALISED SUPPORT SERVICES (1 POST)

The University is seeking a strategic, transformational, and experienced individual to oversee the delivery of specialised Human Capital support services. This role encompasses key areas such as Organisational Development, Talent Development, Performance Management, Human Resource Management Information Systems, and Institutional Transformation. The incumbent should have a deep pride in the Human Capital discipline and fully appreciate the significant impact that Human Capital and Transformation services have on the University's employees. He/She will report to the Executive Director: Human Capital and Transformation, and must meet the requirements and competencies, and be responsible for the following key performance areas below: 

 

REQUIREMENTS

• Master’s degree in Industrial Psychology, Organisational Development, Human Resources Management, or equivalent qualification (NQF 9) 

• At least seven (7) years of related experience managing a broad range of HR disciplines and leading people across multiple organizational units, including experience with organizational change 

• Three (3) years managerial/ leadership experience 

• Experience in institutional transformation, organisational culture and change management 

• Knowledge of Employment Equity legislation and transformation

• Manage Human Resource allocation, acquisition, retention, and motivation based on the Resource Plan 

• Develop tactical plans and offer input to senior-level committees 

• Gather and analyse historical data to determine budget values and participate in finance budgeting committees/meetings.

CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER (1 Post)

The University is looking for an energetic, passionate and knowledgeable individual as its Chief Information Officer to lead and manage the ICT Directorate and who will be responsible for providing visionary strategic leadership, to enable the technology and digital transformation of the University’s academic project and operations. The incumbent will further remain abreast of and exploit the latest technology in higher education sector, especially with regard to Information Assurance, (dissemination, security, Information and management). S/he will be the chief custodian of the University’s Digitalisation strategy and its implementation. He/she will report to the Executive Director: Institutional Support and must meet the requirements and be responsible for the key performance areas listed below. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

• An NQF level 8 qualification in Computer Science/Information Systems or Electronics or Electrical Engineering 

• A post graduate qualification in Computer Science/ Information System or Equivalent is recommended 

• A post graduate Management qualification such as an MBA/MBL is highly recommended 

• Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) certification would be an added advantage 

• Certification in Cyber Security will be an added advantage 

• A minimum of thirteen (13) years’ experience of which at least five (5) years has been at a Senior Management level with a proven track record for effective leadership and management in budgeting and employee development within the Information Technology environment. 

• Knowledge and broad understanding of the use of ICT as a business driver 

• Experience in managing multi-disciplinary functions, e.g. computer and network services, ICT governance, cybersecurity, digitalisation, administrative platforms, teaching and learning and research systems, modern telecommunications and management information 

• Proven knowledge and experience in scenario or strategic planning in complex and diverse knowledge and information management environments, including systems thinking abilities. 

• Business and systems analysis skills, including experience in the analysis, implementation, and evaluation of IT systems/infrastructure and their specifications 

• Demonstrated project management experience, including experience of commissioning services from third parties and managing relationships with suppliers and contractors

• Provide overall direction for the enterprise architecture with specific reference to the ICT infrastructure architecture 

• Develop a digital transformation strategy that feeds into the overall strategic direction of the University, demonstrating innovation in the implementation of the university’s business processes and solutions. 

• Draft and propose policy related to the direction and development of ICT services and facilities across the University. 

• Develop an enterprise technology, knowledge, and information management strategy, and drive the creation of enterprise technology standards to ensure system compatibility and seamless integration 

• Ensure innovation in the implementation of University’s Business processes and solutions 

• Provide overall management, technical, and financial direction for strategic enterprise IT projects 

• Ensures effective management of business and technical teams to ensure all projects meet strategic objectives 

• Manage ICT budget and funds in accordance with University’s financial procedures and processes, within a clear project management framework 

• Provide technical leadership to the University’s information and cyber security capability 

• Ensure the implementation of the quality assurance standards and risk management measures to meet both internally set standards and the requirements of external bodies 

• Effectively manage and develop employees within the IT operations and support team 

• Represent SMU in the regional, national and international ICT committees, professional organizations, and specialized groups, ensuring that ICT is benchmarked nationally and internationally on an ongoing basis 

• Produce relevant strategic and operational reports as and when required, as part of ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the strategic objectives of the Directorate 

• Effectively promote and practice good corporate/IT governance

DIRECTOR: PROJECT MANAGEMENT OFFICE (1 POST)

The University is looking for an energetic professional for the position of Director: Project Management Office to define, maintain and ensure project management standards across the University and act as a centralized and coordinated management hub for all projects, with the aim of creating efficiencies and benefit realisation in projects and linking projects to the institutional objectives. Also to ensure projects are managed in terms of the scope, time and budget while ensuring adherence to quality, legal and cost requirements and ensuring a basis for benefits realisation is set. 

He/She will report to the Vice Chancellor and must meet the requirements and competencies and be responsible for the key performance areas listed below. 

 

REQUIREMENTS

• Degree in Commerce, Engineering, Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Law 

• Ten (10) years of Project Management experience of which five (5) years should be at managerial level 

• A post graduate Qualification/Certificate in Project Management 

• Evidence of current registration with the Professional Construction Project Manager or Project Management Professional (prEng/prCPM) 

• Active professional body membership with either Project Management SA (PMSA), Project Management Institute (PMI), South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP) 

• Experience in the Higher Education Sector, including comprehension of the DHET Macro Infrastructure Framework will be an added advantage 

• Onsite experience in construction and Project Management, including Financial Management of Construction Projects 

• Computer literacy, with a sound knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel and Internet

• Legislative Compliance 

·       Stays abreast with Corporate Governance policies and procedures 

·       Provides input to governance committees, information-and decision-making bodies

·       Report on projects, programs and portfolio governance, risks, resources, scheduling, performance etc to the management and oversight structures 

 

• Project Management 

·       Oversee project managers in other areas within the institution and takes responsibility for the quality and value of University projects 

·       Monitors effectiveness of project management across the institution 

·       Lead the project management Strategy, plan and ensure effective stakeholder management

·       Maintain oversight of key projects and provide regular performance reports to executive management 

 

• Project Liaison for Large Capital Projects 

·       Monitors the implementation of projects by contractors 

·       Evaluates the effective procurement of professionals, contractors, and suppliers 

·       Collaborates closely with Finance, Institutional Planning and Built Environment 

·       Fosters sound, ethical relationships with professionals, contractors & suppliers 

 

• Risk Compliance 

·       Implement risk mitigating policy, plans and preventative action strategies 

·       Manage project management risks relating to delivery within budget, time and quality 

·       Resolves basic issues and problems with external suppliers/ vendors /contractors 

·       Stays abreast of institutional risk mitigation plans 

 

• Planning and Budgeting 

·       Prepare, manage and administer the projects portfolio budget and work break structures 

·       Actively develops partnerships to contribute to financial sustainability through third stream income 

·       Provides standard monthly financial reports 

·       Analyses financial information of projects 

 

• Procurement Policy Compliance 

·       Collaborates with the legal and procurement function regarding non-compliance 

·       Provides input into terms of reference, request for proposal documents 

·       Resolves conflict/non-compliance according to policy & procedure 

·       Fosters professional and ethical supplier relationships 

·       Monitors that product/service delivery is according to agreements 

 

• Change Leadership and transformation implementation 

·       Develop, manage and execute the project communication plans for key projects 

·       Collaborate with Human Capital and Transformation (HC&T) / Project Team 

·       Communicate change expectations to employees 

·       Determine & categorise change risk(s) 

·       Act as the agent for change, driving continuous improvement and working closely with the transformation team to mobilize and embed functional and cultural change 

·       Implements transformation goals and policies in decision making 

·       Stay abreast of transformation legislation, goals & policies 

 

• People Management within span of control 

·       Plans Human Resource allocation, acquisition, retention & motivation based on Resource Plan 

·       Monitors deviations from plan, problem resolution & corrective action initiated 

·       Manages development of staff and human capital process 

 

Safety Health & Environment (SHE) Management 

·       Adheres to the SHE policy 

·       Collaborates with institutional leadership in the roll-out of SHE programs 

• Contribute to the overall development of SMU and actively improve institutional culture 

• Any other duties assigned by the Vice-Chancellor

DEPUTY VICE CHANCELLOR: RESEARCH, INNOVATION AND INTERNATIONALISATION

(1 Post)

The DVC: Research, Innovation and Internationalisation actively support the Vice-Chancellor in the leadership and management of the University. S/he will further take full responsibility for the development of vibrant research, innovation and internationalisation culture that will give effect to the university reaching its strategic objectives as a leading comprehensive university, both regionally and nationally. The incumbent reports to the Vice Chancellor will furthermore be responsible for the key performance and areas and competencies listed below: 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

• A Doctoral degree 

• At least ten (10) years’ experience in executive/senior management (the position of Dean and Head of Academic Department is regarded as senior management) at an institution of higher learning 

• An established research track record with NRF rating and/ or other indication of international stature and/or appointment at the professorial level 

• Demonstrate a track record of supervising postgraduate students 

• Evidence of attracting grant funding, raising money for research and initiating international research collaborations 

• Advanced knowledge, insight and strategic execution capabilities in the development of the innovation, technology transfer and commercialisation ecosystem

• Managing intellectual property, contracts, licensing agreements and commercialisation opportunities 

• Exploring alternative funding opportunities for the core activities of research, innovation and internationalisation at the university 

• Human resource management in that s/he is responsible for: 

·       The development and regular review of structures for its appropriateness to assist the university in achieving its strategic objectives in research, innovation and internationalisation 

·       Attracting high quality academic/research employees 

• Internalize an institutional and performance culture at SMU that supports the implementation of the university mission, vision, values and strategic priorities 

• Re-engineer academic business processes to improve effectiveness and efficiency in research, innovation and internationalisation 

• Lead and inspire staff and provide clear direction through a period of transition

The Registrar will provide strategic leadership and institutional governance, and act as Secretary to Council, Senate and the respective sub-committees and structures, and manage student academic administration. The incumbent will be expected to provide leadership in all activities related to Institutional Governance, Legal Frameworks, Academic Administration, Committee Services, Records Management and Legal Services, including serving as the authorised keeper of the University’s records. The incumbent reports to the Vice Chancellor and will furthermore be responsible for the key performance areas and competencies listed below: 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 

• A Master’s degree in Public Administration, Law or a related field 

• At least ten (10) years relevant experience in academic administration within a tertiary education or related environment, with the last five (5) years in a senior management capacity 

• In-depth knowledge of tertiary education legislation environment and transformation imperatives 

• Relevant university administrative experience in policy and legal frameworks and governance structures 

• Superior interpersonal skills and must be able to operate at all levels of the organisation 

• Strategic leadership and people management skills 

• A good understanding and experience of change management implementation 

 

RECOMMENDATION

• A Doctorate would be a strong recommendation 

• Knowledge and application of the ITS Student Administration and Governance Information System and appreciation of relevant Governance and Student Administration software programs will be an added advantage
