Purpose of Job
To provide geohydrology and hydrology specialist input into water management at Sasol Mining and to support the business to identify and address water related risks, adhere to water related legislation and policies, and improve water management and monitoring practices. The incumbent will work within the framework of the Sasol SHE game plan and is a key input in the formulation of Environmental tactical objective setting, practical water management and monitoring for Sasol Mining operations.
Key Accountabilities
Management:
- Manage 3 x Water Practitioners that are responsible for monitoring and sampling. Including but not limited to annual performance reviews, coaching and development.
- Demonstrate the One Sasol way behaviour – ensure your area under control is managed to the benefit of the larger Sasol value chain.
- Support the one Sasol SHE Excellence Approach and provide specialist input into portfolio specific environmental plans.
- Ensure that portfolio specific activities are being conducted in accordance with the one Sasol SHE Excellence Approach.
- Keep abreast with surface water and groundwater related challenges and potential remediating practices.
Specialist/Technical input:
- Provide specialist input with regards to surface- and groundwater as well as contaminated land identification and remediation.
- Participate in the process of understanding the root cause - own the problem definition and support the development of solutions to relevant stakeholders.
- Specialist input and support into reducing our current environmental footprint and minimise the negative impact on people and the water environment.
- Using demonstrable expert knowledge, attention to detail and team dynamics to solve complex technical problems.
- Share expert knowledge in own team and at all other levels / forums (e.g. COP’s, bow-ties, etc.)
- Peer review all water related specialist reports for projects and provide specialist advice / recommendations.
- Responsible for the investigation of landowner complaints with regards to water.

- Support and advise operational areas on any issues/challenges related to water.
- Review and monitor the monthly UWMS reports from Strategic Planning and provide specialist advice as required.

Risk management:
- Establish business specific risks through the compilation and updating of the required risk assessments related to water management, monitoring, loss of containment (incidents) and potential loss of compliance.
- Report the risk and support business to find solutions in addressing risk.
- Addressing environmental water challenges within Sasol Mining's overall sustainability approach to mitigate business risks.
Compliance management:
- Ensure that all operations have up to date monitoring plans/programmes in line with the approved water use authorisations and environmental approvals.
- Assess portfolio specific legal compliance status of all permits, licenses and authorisations and facilitate implementation of corrective actions/recommendations and practical solutions
- Consult on the prevention and addressing of environmental contamination (e.g. land, waste and water) due to Sasol Mining operations and associated activities.
- Compile high quality biannual (Jan-Jun and Jul-Dec) monitoring reports for Impumelelo, Shondoni, Thubelisha and Bosjesspruit must be complied for sign-off by the operations and submission to Government by the Central Department. These are in support of environmental compliance.
- Peer review biannual reports for Syferfontein, Mooikraal, Sasol Coal Supply (SCS) and Sasol Destoning Plant (SDP)
- Form part of Sasol Mining audit team for mining operations on a bi – annual basis or as required on an ad – hoc basis.
Monitoring and data-base management:
- Ensure governance of practices relating to water, including monitoring and audits.
- Compare and benchmark water monitoring equipment and software applications for use at Sasol Mining to establish the portfolio specific risks.
- Management and improvement of mines’ water chemistry and water level data bases and backups.
- Ensure monthly monitoring of underground water compartment boreholes and expand the monitoring programme if required.
- Provide the water level readings to the Manager Mine Water Planning (Strategic Planning Department) as required.
- Ensure that monitoring of environmental performance (water and effluent) is conducted, recorded and reported as required.
- Take ownership of the water monitoring process including the necessary due diligence relating to data accuracy, reporting and integrity on monitored sites including taking the necessary action in case of deviations from the Sasol standard.
Modelling:
- Review, conceptualise, build and update the Sasol Mining underground water balance, known as the Underground Water Management System (UWMS), for all operational and defunct mining operations on an annual basis or as required on an ad-hoc basis.
- Engage all necessary stakeholders to ensure data used in water models are received timeously, in the correct formats, as requested.
- Conduct the necessary due diligence to ensure defensible scientific accuracy is obtained from the produced models and conduct regular calibration checks to ensure accuracy is maintained.
Relationships:
- Ensure and advise operational areas that there is a system in place to monitor, measure and facilitate legal compliance and risk management and advise where improvements can be made.
- Establish and sustain effective working relationships with relevant internal stakeholders (i.e. mines, surface plants, Land and Rights Department, Mine Closure, Strategic Planning, etc.)

Key Accountabilities
Lead delivery of the integrated HR project portfolio
- Maintain an integrated portfolio view of approved HR projects, including scope, outcomes, milestones, dependencies, risks, owners, resources and value measures.
- Translate approved business priorities into practical delivery roadmaps and project plans.
- Coordinate project sequencing across OD, HRIS, Digital HR, People Analytics, HR governance and related improvement initiatives.
- Ensure initiatives are prioritised against strategic value, delivery readiness, risk, capacity and enterprise impact.

Formal Education

Key Accountabilities
- Design, build, implement and maintain Natref LP models, sub-models and related optimisation tools for production planning, crude evaluation, operating-mode optimisation, budgeting, forecasting, project evaluation and business studies.
- Ensure alignment and consistency between the Natref planning model, retro-run or backcasting models, sub-models, economic assumptions and relevant Sasol Group models or shared modelling frameworks.
- Maintain accurate representation of the Natref refinery configuration, unit operating envelopes, capacities, yields, utility balances, crude assays, product qualities, logistics constraints and commercial assumptions.
- Develop, maintain and enforce Natref modelling standards, governance procedures, model documentation, data ownership, change control and version control.
- Plan and perform routine model validation, calibration, sensitivity testing, audits and health checks to identify gaps and continuously improve model performance and decision quality.
- Work with the Refinery Analyst, Production Planner, Business Analyst, Process Engineering and Operations to implement recommendations arising from retro-run or backcasting analysis and close model-versus-actual performance gaps.
- Translate approved refinery modifications, Hybrid Project changes, shutdown impacts, new crude or product options, process upgrades and commercial changes into validated LP model updates.
- Provide timely optimisation scenarios and recommendations that support BE50, margin uplift, utilisation improvement, value protection, reliability and continuous improvement objectives.
- Manage and coordinate the delivery of approved LP technology vendors and specialist support providers, including Haverly, TotalEnergies and Sasol Group resources, ensuring clear scope, quality, knowledge transfer and value for Natref.
- Partner with Information Management to ensure compliance with Natref and shareholder governance, cybersecurity, licensing, software deployment, access control and business-continuity requirements.
- Build sustainable internal Natref LP capability through structured training, coaching, user guides, model clinics, succession development and competency assessment for planners, analysts and relevant technical users.
- Facilitate the Natref LP governance forum or Model Matrix, communicate model changes and assumptions, and ensure stakeholders understand the business and operational impact of model recommendations.
- Maintain an LP model improvement roadmap, proactively manage modelling risks and dependencies, and report progress, constraints and support requirements to VPS and Natref leadership.
- Promote safe, ethical and fact-based decisions by ensuring optimisation recommendations are technically feasible, transparent, traceable and aligned with SHE, operational and commercial requirements.
Formal Education
- BEng/BSc Engineering or equivalent four year technical degree.

Work Experience
8 years relevant refinery, petrochemical, energy, optimisation, planning or LP modelling experience, including practical model development, calibration and business decision support.

Provide technical support by the independent formulation of a technical approach, data assimilation, assessment, interpretation and contextualisation for a portfolio of plant support activities and projects.

- Monitors plant units against established criteria, reports on observed deviations and collaborates with shift management to correct such operational deviations. Ensures alignment across shift teams on correction of deviations and improved operating procedures.
- Investigates operational improvement opportunities, proposes plans to management (shift and area manager production, lead engineer) and implements in collaboration with production teams.
- Investigate incidents (SHE, production, equipment failure/loss in performance, process condition and product quality deviation) using established Sasol RCA processes and as part of a team. Implement recommendations for operating procedure or plant systems as directed.
- Investigate process improvements and propose modifications to resolve defined problems or exploit improvement opportunities.
- Implement designed solutions as part of the project team, take responsibility for business track deliverables in operating systems update, training of artisans, updating of engineering records, commissioning of plant systems. Prepares professional reports on findings and recommendations and issues to management as part of the plant knowledge management process.
- Implement plant modifications assigned in accordance with the procedures of the MOC process and ensure full update of plant engineering documentation and proper close-out of modifications under your control.
- Supports the execution of improvement initiatives in the production environment to improve productivity, adherence to operating controls and procedures, process artisan competence and skills levels, monitoring and reporting of plant performance measures.
- Participates and contributes to plant improvement and governance studies, e.g. RCA's, RBI studies, Incident investigations, etc.
- Responsible to compile and distribute plant performance reports.
- Perform production standby duties if declared competent and experienced to do so.
- Collects plant data and evidence to supplement DCS and data historian information for problem analysis work. Escalates problem investigation to technical support level if a solution and correction of the problem cannot be achieved within one day.
