Readvertising: Associate Professor/Professor in the Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology (Contract post)

 

The Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology is looking for suitably qualified candidates to join their team.


All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and engaging in community engagement, recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.

 

In addition, a Professor and an Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning, research and community engagement, and contribute towards the institution's governance. This leadership contribution should be evidenced at the departmental, faculty, and institutional levels.

 

The Requirements

 

Associate Professor          

  • A PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline with specialisation in Development Studies.
  • Considerable teaching experience across a range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Candidates must have experience in teaching and publishing in the disciplinary areas of Development Studies.
  • Expertise on development theory and practice required, including an understanding of the South African context.
  • Relevant supervision of Master’s degrees to completion is required. Supervising PhD degrees to completion is an advantage.
  • Approaches to teaching, learning and research, which encompass engagement with relevant communities.
  • National and emerging international profile in the discipline and substantial publication record in peer-reviewed publications.
  • Proven track record and an active interest in administration, management and leadership.
  • A proven track record of fundraising, including for student bursaries, is an advantage.

 

Professor

  • A PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline with specialisation in Development Studies.
  • Extensive teaching experience across a range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
  • Candidates must have experience in teaching and publishing in the disciplinary areas of Development Studies.
  • Expertise on development theory and practice required, including an understanding of the South African context.
  • Relevant supervision of Master’s and PhD degrees to completion is required.

  • International profile in the discipline (Very good to outstanding research track record).

Main Objectives

To respond to users’ needs for hardware technical support. The incumbent will be required to provide professional, efficient, and accurate responses to enable university staff with their IT needs and to ensure the financial sustainability of maintaining equipment. The Requirements

Main Objectives

  • Previous experience in working within a computerized accounting environment and having worked with Excel at least at an intermediate level.
  • Previous experience in working with word-processing (including being able to create and maintain databases), e-mail, and the internet.

  • Previous experience in reconciling/auditing accounts in a research-based institution
