The Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency invites applications from suitably qualified, dynamic, innovative and experienced candidates to fill the position listed below:

 

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

REF NO : CEO 001/08/2026

BASE STATION : HEAD OFFICE (MBOMBELA)

PATERSON GRADE : E4

REMUNERATION : Entry – R1 904 748.74 pa; Mid – R2 190 460.27 pa; Max – R2 519 029.21

DURATION : FIVE – YEAR CONTRACT

REPORTING TO : THE MTPA BOARD

 

Purpose of the Post

To provide strategic leadership and ensure the effective administration and accountability of the Agency. The CEO will be responsible for optimising resources, driving tourism development, and promoting biodiversity conservation within the province.

 

Requirements

• Postgraduate degree or diploma (NQF Level 8) in Environmental Science/Management, Conservation, Natural

Science, Public Administration / Management, Development in Tourism / Marketing, or a related field. A Master’s degree (NQF Level 9) will be an added advantage.

• Minimum of 10 years’ senior management experience, with at least 5 years at Executive Management level.

• Completion of the Senior Management Service (SMS) Pre-Entry Programme (NYUKELA Certificate) as offered by the National School of Government (NSG): https://www.thensg.gov.za/training-course/sms-pre-entryprogramme/.

• Proven experience in tourism development, biodiversity conservation management, hospitality management, and tourism marketing.

• Experience in policy development, organisational transformation, and strategic planning.

• Strong financial management experience, including budgeting, resource allocation, and compliance with the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

• Demonstrated ability to manage large teams and complex projects.

• Excellent leadership, stakeholder engagement, and communication skills.

Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

• Develop, implement, and monitor the Agency’s strategic plan, leading the executive team to achieve organisational objectives.

• Strengthen relationships with the Board, provincial departments, the Member of Executive Council (MEC), and key stakeholders.

• Strengthen the relations between the entity and stakeholders.

• Improve revenue collection

• Serve as the public face of the Agency, promoting the province as a premier tourism destination.

• Ensure financial sustainability, sound risk management, and compliance with the PFMA and other relevant legislation.

• Oversee conservation initiatives, including the management and development of provincial protected areas within national and provincial frameworks.

• Lead the development, promotion, and marketing of tourism destinations, facilities, and services.

• Drive organisational transformation, innovation, and a culture of high performance.

• Promote investment opportunities and commercialisation initiatives within the tourism sector.

 

Additional Information

• The top two (2) candidates in terms of the interview scoring will undergo a compulsory competency assessment.

• The successful candidate will be required to enter into a performance agreement and sign an employment contract within three (3) months of appointment.

• Disclosure of financial interests and security clearance up to the level of “Top Secret” is mandatory.

• Applicants with foreign qualifications have the responsibility to provide proof of the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation.
