BUILDING INSPECTOR 

DIRECTORATE: PLANNING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 

Task Level 10: R323 952 to R420 456 (Basic Salary) 

R508 678 to R633 464 (Total Cost to Council Package per annum) 

(PERMANENT APPOINTMENT)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: 

·       Minimum Qualification National Diploma in Architecture, Building Management, Building Science, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Structural Engineering as stipulated in the National Building Regulations (NQF level 6 qualification) 

·       A minimum of (5) years’ relevant post qualification experience in the building inspector industry of which at least 2 years’ experience should be as a Building Inspector in the local government sphere 

·       Must be computer literate with proficiency in the MS Office suite 

·       Must be in possession of a Valid Code EB Driver’s License and be able to utilize own reliable vehicle 

·       Must be eligible to be registered as a Peace Officer/ candidates that are registered as a Peace Officer will have an added advantage 

·       Proficient in English and at least one other official language of the Western Cape 

·       The incumbent is required to work in all weather conditions 

·       The successful incumbent must be prepared to work Overtime and attend meetings after normal office hours when required 

·       The duties listed in this job description are not exhaustive, and the employer is entitled to instruct the employee at any time to carry out additional duties which are in line with the job description, or in accordance with operational requirements 

 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: 

·       Subject to the overall direction of the Manager: Building Control, attend to inspections, monitoring and the control of all building activities and sites to ensure compliance with legislation 

·       Effective regulation, control and oversight of all building related activities 

·       Liaising and provide general advice to the public, landowners, contractors, architects, and other professionals 

·       Scrutinise and facilitate the approval of building plan applications in accordance with the National Building Regulations and standard municipal operating procedures 

·       Enforcement of regulations where violations of National Building Regulations, Occupational Health and Safety regulations, amongst others, occur 

·       Undertake the monitoring and control of hoarding and demolition conditions 

·       Inspect and examine design details and construction specifications on building plans 

·       Issuing of statutory forms and notices regarding unlawful building work and providing support in undertaking corrective measures, and other duties as may be required from time to time
