The Embassy of France in South Africa invites applications for the position of Media and Communication Officer to join its Political Section in Pretoria. Working under the supervision of the Political Counsellor responsible for domestic politics, press and communication, the successful candidate will manage the Embassy's relations with the media, monitor news and social media, and support the implementation of the Embassy's digital communication strategy.

Key responsibilities:

  • Prepare a daily press review of the South African media.
  • Monitor social media trends and provide recommendations to the Political Counsellor.
  • Manage and update the Embassy's website.
  • Conduct press and social media analysis relating to diplomatic initiatives, summits and crisis situations.
  • Organise press events and media engagements.
  • Assist the Communication Attaché with the preparation of social media content, including videos.

 

Candidate Profile: We are looking for a motivated and proactive professional with experience in communication, journalism or public relations. Internships and traineeships will be considered relevant experience. A qualification in Communication, Journalism, Political Science or a related field is required.

 

Required Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, X, LinkedIn and TikTok.
  • Experience with video editing, Canva or similar content creation software.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including managing media contact databases and press subscriptions.
  • Outstanding written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to take initiative, develop new communication ideas and build professional relationships with journalists and influencers.
  • Strong interest in France, diplomacy, South African politics, society, digital culture and online trends.
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills. Support the Communication Attaché and provide cover during periods of leave.

 

Language: Excellent written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of French is a strong advantage. Employees who are not fluent in French (C1/C2) will be required to attend French language classes offered by the Embassy.

 

Contract and benefits: salary; R 45 059.00 gross per month + 13th month, medical aid, pension fund and transport allowance of R 750.00. Fixed-term contract with a probationary period. Opportunity to obtain a permanent contract after a qualifying period. French language training provided by the Embassy. Non-South African applicants must have a valid permission to work and/or permanent residence permit.

 

Workplace: Embassy of France, 250 Melk Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria. The successful candidate will share an office with one colleague.

 

Recruitment Process: The selection process will include: One written assessment, at least one interview, assessments and interviews will take place from 17 August 2026. Expected starting date: 15 September 2026.
