Job Purpose
To manage and deliver mechanical engineering projects by providing technical guidance, contract oversight, financial monitoring, and team leadership, ensuring that all projects are completed on time, within budget, to required quality standards, and in full compliance with regulatory and organisational requirements.
Key Performance Areas
Project and Programme Management
- Plans, coordinates and manages mechanical engineering projects from initiation to completion.
- Provide support to Engineers on projects and ensure projects align with objectives, budget and standards.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, policies, and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Environmental Management requirements.
- Lead the execution of projects directly, ensuring time, cost, and quality targets are achieved.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks through proactive planning and monitoring.
- Ensure project close-out reports are accurate, comprehensive, and completed in line with organisational requirements.
- Develop project schedules, budgets and resources plans for individual projects.
- Communicate and adjust individual project plans in line with project progress when required to ensure objectives are met.
- Ensure technical issues on projects are resolved.
- Establish the working relationship with end user department needed to facilitate the coordination and execution of project work, such that the operational impact is minimised.
- Prepare and review tender documentation, contracts, and technical specifications in line with applicable standards.
- Manage and monitor contractors and consultants to ensure contractual obligations and performance targets are met.
- Validate and approve invoices against deliverables.
- Conduct project performance management evaluations in consultation with end user department.
- Track project performance and progress through regular reporting and review of deliverables to ensure the project is kept on schedule and delivered within approved budget.
- Administer contract variations, claims and disputes in collaboration with the Quantity Surveyor and other relevant stakeholders.
- Participate in project negotiations in collaboration with Supply Chain Management.
Engineering and Technical Support
- Provide strategic mechanical engineering input and advice from project inception through planning, implementation and operations.
- Implement engineering designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
- Identify and report on engineering challenges that arise during project execution, for resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional departments to provide technical advice on infrastructure planning and development initiatives.
- Lead concept studies and provide technical expertise in designing and optimising pump, pipeline, and mechanical systems.
- Continuously monitor and research emerging technologies, engineering methodologies, and industry innovations, evaluating their relevance and advising on practical applications to improve mechanical engineering systems and project performance.
Financial Management
- Track and report on project expenditure, financial forecasts, and budget variances, and recommend corrective actions.
- Coordinate with the Quantity Surveyor on cost management, budget adjustments, and financial reporting.
Reporting and Documentation
- Ensure comprehensive project documentation, including technical reports, plans, and registers are maintained, accurate, up to date and readily available for audit and compliance purposes.
- Prepare and present project progress, financial, and performance reports to management and stakeholders
People Management and Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and manage the team to ensure high performance, accountability, and professional growth.
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations for all team members.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and implement development plans.
- Monitor team workload, allocation of resources, and capacity to ensure efficient service delivery.
- Provide guidance and support to team members in handling complex matters across the organisation.
General
- Drive continuous improvement in project delivery processes and methodologies.
- Follow and execute procurement process required to complete projects.

Minimum Requirements
- A recognised NQF Level 7 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification
- Five (5) years experience in mechanical engineering projects.

Key Performance Areas
Project and Programme Management
- Conduct project analysis and feasibility studies

Engineering and Technical Support
- Conduct detailed analysis and evaluations of existing processes and recommend solution for improvement.

- Develop plans for approved optimisation strategies and ensure implementation.
- Review, analyse and submit process modelling, simulation, designs, metrics and optimisations for approval.
- Conduct and review research and recommendations for the best solution to process-related issues.
Financial Management
- Provide input on Capex and Opex budget for project within division.
- Develop and maintain procurement plans.
- Track and monitor Capex and Opex project budget variances and report on any deviation and/or adjustments required.
- Review and submit project invoices for approval
Reporting and Documentation
- Conduct compliance audits and draft accurate and complete reports accordingly to organisational requirements.
- Continuously review and audit project documentation to ensure accurate and readily available information.
- Consolidate team project progress reports and report accordingly to ensure projects are completed in line within agreed scope, timelines, and budget
People Management and Leadership

1. Project and Programme Management

- Sign off invoices and ensure alignment with project pricing schedule and deliverables.
4. Reporting and Documentation
- Ensure comprehensive project documentation is maintained, accurate and readily available for audit and compliance purposes.
- Report on project progress to Management.
5. Research
- Ensure methods, equipment and process technologies are continuously benchmarked against industry best practice and standards.
- Ensure new process technologies, equipment, chemicals or automation tools are investigated and evaluated.
- Ensure research studies are continuously conducted and that team participates in external research studies.
6. People Management and Leadership
