This role ensures plant reliability by performing mechanical maintenance, repairs and installation activities. It supports safe, efficient operations by diagnosing faults, preventing equipment failures and complying with all safety and maintenance standards.
Description of Job
1. Mechanical Maintenance and Repairs Frequency: Daily
• Perform planned, preventative and breakdown mechanical maintenance on plant equipment.
• Investigate, fault-find and diagnose root causes of mechanical failure.
• Repair, machine, fit or replace worn or defective parts.
• Conduct inspections to identify potential mechanical risks or early failures.
• Record all completed work on CMMS.
• Carry out routine and preventative maintenance on all mechanical equipment according to maintenance standards.
• Maintain workshop equipment, tools, lifting equipment and vehicles (to ensure availability, functioning and safety).
• Conduct condition monitoring activities (vibration checks, temperature readings, visual inspections).
2. Fabrication, Machining and Modification Frequency: Daily
• Manufacture, modify or refurbish mechanical spares.
• Find solutions to plant problems by liaising with the Supervisors and taking remedial actions.
3. Installation, Commissioning and Shutdown Activities Frequency: Daily
• Install, commission and decommission mechanical equipment.
• Assist with shutdown planning and execution.
• Perform pre-shutdown inspections and post-shutdown reporting.
• Perform rigging activities related to assigned tasks.
• Ensure equipment is correctly aligned, tested and handed back to operations.
• Verify equipment performance after installation or major repairs.
4. Safety, Compliance and Governance Frequency: Daily
• Ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
• Report any injuries on duty immediately to Supervisor.
• Immediately report unsafe working conditions, practices and installations.
• Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks and risk assessments.
• Ensure proper housekeeping standards in workshop and plant areas.
5. Coordination, Reporting and Support Frequency: Daily
• Meet with Supervisor daily to review maintenance activities and plan work.
• Coordinate with administration and other trades to complete work orders and projects efficiently.
• Provide on the job training and guidance to apprentices and subordinates.
• Assist the immediate supervisor with general administrative tasks including job feedback and reporting.
• Perform standby duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
1. Minimum Qualifications:
Grade 12 / N3 Certificate in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Recognised Trade Test Certificate (Fitter).
Code B / C1 Driver’s License
2. Minimum operational experience required:
Minimum of 3 years’ post‑trade experience as a Fitter, preferably in the wastewater and water treatment industry.
Experience in mechanical maintenance, fault‑finding, troubleshooting, assessment, strip and repair of pumps, gearboxes, filter belt presses, mechanical screens, grit classifiers, rotating equipment and similar mechanical equipment.
3. Special Requirements:

• Valid medical fitness certificate (where applicable for plant work).
• Physical fitness to perform manual tasks and work in confined spaces
• Willingness to perform standby duties and work overtime when required
• Ability to work at heights
