PROFESSOR:

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD/Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of 10 years’ teaching in Higher Education Institution experience
  • Sustained research track record of publications in accredited journals.
  • Track record of supervision of postgraduates and leadership of research group/s.
  • Sustained track record of external funding.
  • Evidence of collaborative linkages.

Summary of duties

  • Dealing with student queries and complaints regarding the Department/Programme.
  • Managing and supervising staff which includes: -

  • Enhancing staff relations and building a team towards a student centred department.
  • Attending to matters such as study leave, grievances, disputes, training & development.

Senior Lecturer

  • PhD or equivalent NQF level 10 qualification in the Built Environment, with an undergraduate qualification in urban planning or related town and regional planning.

Job Description

The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), in partnership with Durban University of Technology (DUT), is embarking on an initiative to build a new generation of academics. Phase 11 of the New Generation of Academics Programme is aimed at attracting people with relevant qualifications and experience to pursue a Doctoral qualification while they are developing as proficient academics at the University. Successful candidates will engage in comprehensive support programmes that include salary, mentorship, equipment, cost of tuition fees, etc.

 

The University is looking for aspiring academics in the following academic discipline:-

 Minimum requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Architecture or equivalent.
  • Committed to pursuing a Doctoral qualification in Architecture within the time permitted.
  • An aggregate of 70% in their Master's academic record.
  • Must be South African and below the age of 40.

  • ​2 years post-graduate experience in Architecture.

 In accepting an nGAP appointment, the incumbent will have to:

  1. Commit to full participation in the 6-year New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) with an additional 2 years at DUT.
  2. Commit to registering for Doctoral studies (as applicable) within 3 months of taking up the Please note that nGAP appointees who already hold a doctorate will be required to undertake higher teaching/research.
  3. Commit to work closely with the supervisor and mentor assigned to him/her, and to adhere to the study plan and milestones developed with the supervisor and mentor. 
  4. Commit to participate in the SSAUF Development Programme, which may involve participation in at least one short course/module per year focused on research or teaching.
  5. Agree that s/he cannot accept any other funding from state sources that duplicates the purpose for which funding has already been allocated through the nGAP.
  6. Agree that s/he cannot accept any other funding for projects that conflict with obligations that arise from participating in the nGAP.
  7. Agree to inform the University and the Department of Higher Education and Training of any other funding that s/he has been offered before accepting such funding. 
  8. Agree that should s/he leave the nGAP position before completing the 8-year programme, s/he will be obliged to reimburse the nGAP fund by repaying the University the following costs incurred up to the point of leaving.
  • Registration and tuition fees for postgraduate studies, where applicable.
  • Costs associated with the assignment of a mentor to support.
  • Costs incurred for his/her participation in the SSAU F-Development.
  • Costs of infrastructure and equipment provided to support his/her work
  • Any conference/ international mobility costs paid by the nGAP.
  • 10% of salary costs paid by the nGAP up to the point of leaving.

Purpose of the Role

To provide high-level, confidential executive and administrative support to the Chief Financial Officer by coordinating financial governance workflows, managing executive communications and documentation, ensuring compliance with financial reporting and audit requirements, and facilitating the timely implementation and tracking of finance-related decisions across the institution.

The role exercises independent judgement in prioritising finance and governance matters, coordinating cross-functional financial inputs, supporting audit and reporting cycles, and ensuring alignment with institutional policies, regulatory requirements and financial governance frameworks.

 

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in either Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance Administration, Governance or related field.

Ideal / Advantageous

  • Advanced Minute-Taking Certification.
  • Project Management short course.
  • Records Management certification.

Experience

Minimum

  • Minimum 5 years administrative or executive support experience.
  • At least 3 years supporting senior management.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Provide high-level executive and administrative support to the CFO, including managing a complex diary, priorities, correspondence and executive workflows.
  • Screen, assess and quality-assure reports, submissions and requests for accuracy, compliance, urgency, financial implications and risk prior to CFO review.
  • Draft executive correspondence, briefing notes, reports, presentations and structured briefing packs for the CFO.
  • Coordinate governance documentation and submissions for Council, Executive Committees, Finance Committee, Audit & Risk Committee and other relevant governance structures.
  • Monitor governance deadlines, CFO decisions, resolutions, audit actions and other portfolio deliverables to ensure timely implementation and follow-through.
  • Coordinate and consolidate financial and other inputs from Finance divisions, faculties, support units, auditors and external stakeholders into executive-ready information.

  • Ensure all maintenance requests, complaints, and queries are logged, categorised, prioritised, and assigned accurately.
  • Monitor service desk performance against agreed SLAs and response time targets.
  • Develop and implement SOPs for service desk operations.
  • Manage the CMMS platform ensuring data integrity, system configuration, and user access.
  • Coordinate with maintenance managers to ensure timely work order resolution.

Customer Service & Stakeholder Management

  • Ensure a professional, responsive, and customer focused service desk experience.
  • Manage complaint escalation processes and ensure timely resolution of stakeholder concerns.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders across all campuses.
  • Conduct customer satisfaction surveys and implement improvement actions.
  • Ensure consistent and proactive communication regarding maintenance schedules and disruptions.

Reporting & Data Management

  • Compile and present daily, weekly, and monthly reports on service desk performance.
  • Develop dashboards and analytics to track work order volumes, resolution times, and trends.
  • Analyse service data to identify recurring issues and recommend preventive actions.
  • Ensure accurate records management and document control for all service desk activities.
  • Provide management with actionable intelligence for decision-making.

People Management

  • Lead, supervise, and develop the Service Desk team.
  • Set performance targets, conduct reviews, and manage staff development.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and work scheduling to maintain service continuity.
  • Address performance issues and manage disciplinary matters in line with HR policies.
  • Foster a positive, team oriented, and customer focused work culture.

Process Improvement & Quality Assurance

  • Identify opportunities to improve service desk processes, systems, and workflows.
  • Implement quality assurance measures including call monitoring and work order audits.
  • Benchmark service desk performance against industry standards.
  • Drive automation and digital transformation initiatives for service delivery.
  • Manage the implementation of system upgrades and new technology solutions.
