Lecturer in Nautical Studies (Ref. M311)


The Department of Maritime Studies invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of a Lecturer in the Seagoing Maritime Programme. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong interest in maritime education, training, and research.

 

 Minimum requirements 

  • Master’s degree in Maritime StudiesNautical Science, or a closely related maritime discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of teaching and/or industry experience. (Seagoing experience relevant to the programme (Deck), supported by a valid or previously held Certificate of Competency (at Management Level) issued in terms of STCW).

Additional Information

  • Evidence of teaching, training, or facilitation in a maritime or higher education environment will be an advantage.
  • Commitment to postgraduate supervision, research, and professional development.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lecture and assess modules within the Seagoing Maritime Programme (Deck) in accordance with STCW, SAMSA, and institutional requirements.
  • Contribute to curriculum development, quality assurance, and programme accreditation processes.
  • Supervise postgraduate students and produce research outputs aligned with departmental goals.
  • Participate in departmental administration, industry engagement, and academic leadership activities.
  • Support simulation-based training and practical components where required.

Lecturer:

  • MTech/MSc qualification in Surveying/Geomatics or equivalent, with an undergraduate qualification in Surveying/Geomatics.
  • At least 3 years of academic and/or professional experience.
  • Required to currently be pursuing or immediately pursue a doctoral qualification in Surveying/Geomatics

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC MANAGEMENT, LAW AND ECONOMICS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • PhD and undergraduate qualifications in Public Management/Administration, Local Government, /Supply Chain Management/Public Affairs.
  • At least 5 years lecturing experience of teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • At least 4 publications in national and or international DHET-accredited journals within the last 4 years. Evidence of publication including articles or book chapters.
  • Proven experience in the delivery of poster, and or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Public sector or Public Finance related experience.
  • Demonstrate innovative thinking towards teaching and learning
  • Availability to work at other DUT campuses and in the evenings.
  • Conduct teaching, learning and assessment using a blended mode
  • An NRF rating or potential to obtain an NRF rating.

 

  SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Provide leadership towards the department’s strategic plan on teaching, research and engaged scholarship.
  • Conduct research and publish in high impact DHET-accredited journals.
  • Contribute to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the department.
  • Supervise Master’s dissertations and PhD theses.
  • Present at accredited conferences, workshops and seminars to enhance scholarly knowledge.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with relevant external stakeholder from government, civic society, industry and other professional organisations.
  • Serve in various administrative committees in the department, faculty and institution.
  • Serve as a leader in mentoring others in teaching, learning and research.
  • Undertake administration and other academic duties assigned by the Head of Department.
  • Give guidance in curriculum design and implementation in the department and faculty.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: LECTURER POSITION  


Master’s degree and undergraduate qualifications in Public Management/ Administration, Local Government Management/Supply Chain Management/Public Affairs

• At least 2 years proven experience of teaching Public Management / Local Government Management/ Supply Chain Management within the public sector at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and industry experience of one or more years.

• Preference will be given to applicants who are registered for a PhD with traceable progress.

• Active participation in professional, public service and or community activities.

• Proven experience in the delivery of poster or oral presentations at conferences or equivalent activities.
