SENIOR TECHNICAL OFFICER – DRILL RIG OPERATOR (PERCUSSION/RC)

Position Status: Permanent

Reporting Line: Manager: Technical Services

 

Overall Job Purpose: To execute drilling for geotechnical assessment, groundwater studies and other geoscientific research boreholes using multifunctional reverse circulation and percussion drill rig, with related drilling equipment and technologies.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drilling for groundwater assessment and geoscientific research boreholes using percussion and reverse circulation drilling methods. This will include, but not limited to groundwater boreholes to maximum depth of 250 meters and mineral assessment boreholes to the maximum depth of 450 meters, installation of steel and uPVC casings, etc.
  • Drilling of geotechnical assessment boreholes using percussion/reverse circulation drilling methods. This includes geotechnical assessment of boreholes to maximum depth of 100 meters.
  • Borehole development and casing for groundwater, geotechnical assessment and mineral exploration using steel and uPVC casings, etc.
  • Developing of borehole as per the client’s specifications, which can include but not limited to blow testing, water yield testing, etc.
  • Recovering or (fishing) of lost equipment down the hole during drilling, such as rods, bits, etc.
  • Prepare the related drilling equipment needed for each type of drilling method.
  • Supervise assistant technical personnel while undertaking drilling services.
  • Borehole development and casing for mineral exploration.
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures related to drilling methods and operations.
  • Recording data or information during drilling, such as drilled core meters, gas detected etc.
  • Handling and processing of the samples as prescribed by the requests of the client.
  • Check and maintain good quality of core regularly to adhere to the specifications and quality standards set by the organisation.
  • Daily checks and minor maintenance of equipment are required and recorded as per the organisation checklists and reports, and to the specifications of the client.
  • Loading and offloading of equipment at the office and drill site using the safe work procedures laid down by the organisation.
  • Setting up and dismantling of camps and drill sites. The drill sites must be safe and not destructive to the environment. The drill sites must be rehabilitated and left as close to the original state as possible, or to the acceptance of the client.
  • Assist in driving the vehicle necessary to move the drill rig and equipment. The driller/technical officer will be required to assist with the driving of the trucks and other vehicles to mobilise the equipment from and to drill sites.
  • Execute all administrative aspects related to drilling, for day-to-day record keeping of all activities at the drill site, such as daily drill record, vehicle log and checklists, etc.
  • Execute ad-hoc tasks deemed necessary by the Supervisor or Manager, such as transport of equipment, etc.

 

Learning and Development

  • Supervise and provide guidance to the Assistant Technical Officers during drilling operations. 
  • Provide guidance in drilling methodologies, data collection and ensure quality control related to drilling and mineral exploration.
  • Monitor and evaluate drilling operations, while mentoring assistant technical officers.

 

Quality Assurance

  • Development and implement of quality documentation, and work within the requirements of the prescribed standards (ISO 9001 quality documentation).
  • Ensuring health and safety measures on and off drilling sites.
  • Develop and implement drilling operating manuals work procedures for ISO certification.
  • Mentor and supervise Assistant Technical Officers to ensure quality core recovery. 
  • Facilitate training courses or workshops to junior staff.

  • Valid training certificates of drilling methods for reverse circulation and percussion will be an advantage.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of seven (07) years of reverse circulation and percussion drilling experience.
  • Knowledge and experience in drilling for geotechnical assessment, mainly in dolomitic terrain using reverse circulation or percussion drilling.
  • Knowledge and experience in drilling for groundwater investigation and assessment using percussion and reverse circulation.
  • Knowledge and experience in drilling reverse circulation boreholes for mineral exploration.
  • Knowledge and experience in preparation of the equipment needed for each type of drilling methods required.
  • Knowledge and experience of ensuring health and safety measures on and off drilling site.
  • Knowledge and experience of standard operating procedures related to drilling methods and operations.
  • Experience of recording data or information during drilling such as drilled sample meters, water strikes, cavities, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience with stick or mig welding, and gas cutting and brazing.
  • Proven experience of operating a truck mounted crane. Operator ticket or valid certificate to be supplied.
  • Knowledge and experience of minor mechanical repairs such as replacement of air and fuel.

Overall Job Purpose: The role will assist in rendering end-to-end effective and efficient Human Resources support and services to ensure compliance with HR policies and procedures in the Council for Geoscience.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Talent Acquisition (Recruitment)

  • Develop processes and tools for effective staffing needs assessment.

Overall Job Purpose: The incumbent will be responsible for providing effective and efficient motor vehicle driving services to the Council for Geoscience (CGS) and its business units. The role includes transporting scientific and support staff to facilitate the execution of geoscience technical programmes, as well as performing related administrative duties in accordance with established policies and procedures.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Operations Management

  • Render effective and efficient motor vehicle driver services.
  • Transport scientific staff to undertake field duties in execution of the geoscience technical programme.
  • Assist scientific staff in collection and curation of geoscience data.
  • Drive light and medium motor vehicles to transport CGS staff, stakeholders and to deliver other goods and other.
  • Ensure timeous delivery and collection of staff to and from designated areas.
  • Ensure timeous execution of the daily transportation schedule as agreed.
  • Manage changes and unforeseen obstacles that impact daily transportation schedules and consult with the Manager or Supervisor when necessary.

  • Adhere to all traffic rules and regulations as well as safety requirements.
  • Complete all the required and prescribed records and logbooks with regards to the motor vehicle and items or goods handled in a timely manner.

  • Perform pre and post trip inspections on motor vehicles for any damage.
  • Assist with the delivery and collection of motor vehicles to and from various maintenance agents and third parties.
  • Liaise with the relevant end user when transportation of passengers and other items or goods are needed.
  • Collect, deliver and distribute company mail, documents and parcels timeously to the correct recipients.
  • Maintain documentation and up-to-date records of mail delivery, collection and distribution.
  • Safeguard allocated motor vehicles, mail, documents and parcels against theft, misuse and loss.
  • Assist with the recovery of broken-down vehicles when requested.
  • Assist with CGS operational needs outside normal working hours when requested.

Overall Job Purpose:  The primary purpose of the position is to provide End user-support and IMAC (Installations, moves, additions and changes). 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide Level 1–2 technical support for hardware, software, and network-related issues.
  • Use ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus to log, track, prioritize, and resolve and closing incidents and service requests.
  • Monitor system health and performance using ManageEngine monitoring tools.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall Job Purpose : To undertake multidisciplinary research on financial, policy and mineral economics related but not limited to, the mineral exploration activities for various commodities, exploration budgets, exploration value chain, commodity supply as well as current and future demand trends in South Africa.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research and Development 

  • Conduct independent advanced research in mineral economics (but not limited to) the fields of mineral exploration trends, mineral wealth and budgets, and commodity markets (e.g., supply and demand, production, and value chains) and statistical evaluation thereof.
  • In-depth analysis including quality control and quality assurance (QAQC), data processing, modelling, and data interpretation related to mineral economics and mineral exploration. 
  • Conduct assessment of mineral wealth and mineral expenditure in Africa and South African context.
  • Conduct analysis of future commodity supply and demand, with projected future trends.
  • Compile technical reports with scientists and interns focusing on mineral economics studies.

  • Undertake advanced geoscience investigations focused on South Africa’s groundwater resources and provide advice on water-related issues.

SENIOR SCIENTIST – HYDROGEOLOGY 

Position Status: Permanent 

Peromnes Grade      : P07 (R 1 191 142.60 CTC Per Annum) 

Location: Pretoria, Head Office 

Reporting Line         : Manager: Scientific Resources 

 

Overall Job Purpose: Undertake advanced integrated geoscience research to provide fundamental understanding of groundwater resources which includes project management and project implementation under limited guidance of senior staff.

                               

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 Research and Development

  • Conduct independent advanced research focused on South Africa’s groundwater resources and provide expert advice on water-related issues.
  • Undertake advanced geoscience research and development to improve understanding of the hydrogeological regime.
  • Conduct geological surveys and mapping, analysing geological data to understand subsurface geology that controls groundwater flow paths, storage, and quantity.
  • Contribute to predicting the movement of contaminants in groundwater, helping to identify potential sources of pollution and to design remediation strategies.
  • Participate in compiling and overseeing the development of reports, maps, and similar publications on the Council for Geoscience’s (CGS) hydrological mapping projects and broader geoscience programme.
  • Participate in geoscience data mining, collection, interpretation, and modelling toward developing the knowledge and strength of South Africa’s developmental imperatives.
  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and supervision to junior staff towards their professional development, e.g. guiding their work, monitoring progress, checking maps and editing reports on various geoscience projects.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new methodologies.
  • Resolve complex problems in a variety of geoscientific fields with minimal guidance or supervision.
  • Initiate, lead, or participate in statutory and commercial projects.

 

Project Implementation/ Project Management

  • Evaluate the results, edit reports for publication compiled by junior scientists, and prepare your own work for publication by the CGS.
  • Interrogate the analytical results (including eliminating possibilities of batch effects) from the laboratory of the submitted samples. Use knowledge to ascertain technical soundness of the data and identify & explain results that do not correspond to known scientific models.
  • Geoscience data processing, interpretation and packing toward defining research areas/requirements and the establishment of solutions toward mandated research objectives.
  • Initiate, develop and give geoscience input to project proposals and/or tenders for both statutory and commercial work.
  • Implement risk mitigation measures as directed by the Unit manager/project manager.
  • Give geoscientific input to the negotiation of existing contract proposals and manage the execution of work during project implementation.
  • Lead and/or make and provide assistance during negotiations for contract timeframes extension within the framework of the approved contract/scope of work.
  • Lead tasks or projects and monitor project execution and budget expenditure in line with deliverables and objectives.
  • Make technical contributions to the compilation of commercial and statutory project tender documents or contracts.
  • Ensure that the project is executed in line with its objectives.

 

 Stakeholder Relations and Reporting

  • Recommend resources for tasks and/or projects.
  • Ensure that the project is executed within budget and on time.
  • Present research results at major conferences locally and/or internationally.
  • Publish research findings in CGS publications and/ or recognised journals.
  • Give scientific advice to the public and private sector organizations in line with organizational policies.
  • Proficiently presents research findings, both in written, electronic and verbal forms.
  • Liaise directly with consultants, clients, officials and the public.
  • Develop and implement operating manuals for work procedures in line with ISO standards.
  • Evaluate work and reports from junior staff.
  • Produce products in line with industry norms, standards and guidelines.

 

 Learning and Development

  • Mentor, coaches, and facilitates skills transfer to junior staff.
  • Present training workshops /courses to junior staff.
  • Evaluate the results, edit reports for publication by junior scientists, and prepare your own work for publication by the CGS.
  • Supervise and provide guidance in the execution of projects by junior staff.
  • Undertake varied geoscientific tasks as required and stipulated within the Council for Geoscience mandate.

  • MSc/ PhD in Geology/Hydrogeology or any other relevant earth science qualification, plus 5 years relevant experience, or
  • PhD in Geology/Hydrogeology or any other relevant earth science qualification, plus 3 years relevant experience.
  • Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat.) registration with SACNASP.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in the planning and execution of geoscience research projects with inputs from senior staff.
  • Experience in providing reports on technical matters relating to area of expertise and can make basic technical recommendations.
  • Experience of preparing research articles for scientific journals and/or presentations at national/international conferences, with moderate supervision.
  • Experience of preparing technical reports for clients, with guidance from senior staff.
  • Experience of preparing or contributing to the project proposal.

SCIENTIST – GEOPHYSICS 

Position Status: Permanent

Overall, Job Purpose: Undertake moderate geoscience research in a wide variety of geoscientific fields to assist with acquisition, processing, and analysis of geophysical data, which includes project management and project implementation under guidance of more senior scientific staff.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Research and Development

  • Conduct moderate geoscience research, which includes the collection and processing of geophysical data, including seismic, magnetic, and gravity data, under the guidance of more senior scientific staff.
  • Contribute to advancing non-invasive techniques to understand the Earth's interior and buried structures using seismic, electromagnetic, and gravity methods and applying these techniques in geoscience research, including, but not limited to, mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, and hazard assessment.
  • Compilation of maps under the guidance of more senior scientific staff.
  • Compile reports on research findings in line with specific disciplines under the guidance of more senior scientific staff.
  • Resolve simple to moderately complex problems in a variety of geoscientific fields in line with large parts of SOP/research methodologies under guidance or supervision.
  • Participate in geoscientific statutory and occasionally commercial projects and publish research findings internally and or externally.
  • Undertake varied geoscientific tasks as required and stipulated within the Council for Geoscience mandate.

 

Project Implementation/ Project Management

  • Design, plan and manage field studies/research techniques under the guidance of more senior scientific staff.
