EPWP: ECO GUIDES

SHORT TERM CONTRACT POSITIONS

(7 months)

DEPARTMENT: Environment & Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) 

BRANCH: Strategic Coordination 

DESIGNATION: EPWP Eco Guide 

REMUNERATION: R4 500 pm (stipend) 

LOCATION: Traduna House, 118 Jorissen Street, Braamfontein 

 

Minimum Requirements: 

·       Matric Certificate/ Grade 12. 

·       Must be fit to perform physical duties (e.g., waste clean-up or establishing a food garden). 

·       Passion for environmental issues and working with communities. 

·       Good communication skills (written and spoken) 

·       Good public speaking ability. 

·       Able to work independently and as part of a team. 

·       Previous experience/ volunteering in environmental education or community engagement will be an added advantage. 

·       South African Citizen, residing in the City of Johannesburg. 

·       Persons residing in the Regions listed above may apply for these positions; and 

·       EPWP requirement: Proof that the applicant resides in the Region listed by submitting a note from the ward councillor or an affidavit signed by an authorised body; 

·       Affidavit that the applicant has no criminal record. 

 

Primary Function: 

The Eco Guides serve as community-based environmental ambassadors who support the City in fostering an environmentally informed, responsible and active citizenry. The role contributes to strengthening environmental stewardship, promoting sustainable practices within communities and encouraging positive behavioural change towards the protection and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources. 

 

Key Activities: 

·       Organise and conduct broad environmental education and awareness campaigns in line with the City’s Environmental Education and Awareness Strategy and Campaigns Framework. 

·       Lead or support local community awareness campaigns focused on, amongst others, effective waste management, clean air initiatives, water conservation and climate resilience. 

·       Conduct or participate in public outreach campaigns to educate stakeholders on the City’s environmental by-laws. 

·       Conduct and organise school-based environmental awareness outreach and other educational activities. 

·       Attend orientation, workshops and other capacity-building sessions on environmental issues. 

·       Report on activities, outcomes, and participation in monthly progress meetings.

·       Good public speaking ability; 

·       Good Interpersonal and community engagement skills.
