ABOUT THE JOB:

The role of the Chief Engineer Electronics: RF Systems is to design and development radio frequency, microwave, and wireless systems.  The Chief Engineer Electronics: RF Systems also provides expert systems and technology support to the South African Navy and other clients.  The Chief Engineer Electronics:  RF Systems also manages IMT projects.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

·       Grade 12 

·       Degree in Engineering (B.Eng. / B.Sc. Eng.) (Electrical /Electronics) or equivalent.

·       MSc (Eng.) (Electrical /Electronics) with RF systems.

 

Added Advantage: 

  • PhD in Electrical /Electronic Engineering 
  • ECSA registration

 

EXPERIENCE

·       9-12 years’ experience working with RF systems.  

·       Experience in design and development of radio frequency, microwave, and wireless systems is mandatory.  

·       Experience with RF systems development and testing and using RF Test Equipment.

·       Experience with tracking radar design, development and testing will be an advantage.  

·       Experience with development or utilisation of software models in order to simulate, verify or interpret raw data or trial results is mandatory.  

·       Experience in developing software for integrating systems, capturing sensor data and human-machine interfaces is mandatory.  

·       Experience in design and development of networking solutions to integrate geographically separated sensors and systems is mandatory.  

·       Extensive experience in Engineering and Engineering Projects Management is mandatory.  

·       Experience in the military environment will be an advantage

 

CRITICAL PERFORMANCE AREA:

The incumbent will be responsible to perform the following functions but not limited to;

  • To provide a systems engineering function focused on electromagnetic systems applicable to the Maritime/Naval Environment including Radio Communications, Radar and Electronic Warfare (EW).
  • To design and development radio frequency, microwave, and wireless systems.
  • To design, enhance and test the accuracy of tracking radar systems.
  • To develop or utilise software models in order to simulate, verify or interpret raw data or trial results.
  • To develop software for systems integration, sensor data capturing and human-machine interfaces.
  • To design networking solutions to integrate geographically separated sensors and systems.
  • To manage and execute technically complex IMT projects with multiple specialists and support personnel as team members.
  • To contribute as an expert to the development, integration, application and analysis of naval systems (in domain specific capability area).
  • May develop complex computer models in order to simulate and to interpret results and to perform mathematical verification.
  • To write technical reports specifying raw data as well as interpretation of results and make recommendations based on the evaluation of the system performance.
  • To translate the client expectations into a valid technical solution.
  • To generate System Engineering documentation, including specifications, evaluation plans and build documentation for Configuration Management.
  • Execution of system tests (hardware / software) and document test results.
  • Interpret complex measured results and propose actions and recommendations. 
  • Comprehend and apply knowledge of the widely applied principles underpinning good engineering practice and specialist knowledge.
  • Be responsible for making complex engineering decisions as part of engineering activities.
  • To identify opportunities for IMT process improvement.
  • Provide expert consultancy advice and influence internal and external stakeholders on engineering/scientific activities in own area of expertise.
  • Communicate and network with client in support of IMT objectives and identify new business opportunities
  • To network with industry to be aware of latest available technology in area of expertise.
  • To undertake professional development activities, sufficient to maintain and extend competence in specified areas.
  • To mentor and share expertise with team members with less experience based on area of specialization.
  • May represent IMT on conferences, seminars and workshops.
  • Responsible for appropriate allocated ad hoc tasks (e.g. organizational, technical, sea going, diving, SHEQ, etc.)

 

KNOWLEDGE & FUNCTIONAL SKILLS

  • Knowledge of radar and EW at the systems level (Plot Extraction and Tracking, Signal Interfacing, Integration, Electronic Support Measures and Jamming) is key.  
  • Knowledge of radio communications and communications EW at the systems level (Fill Management, Secure Communications and Electronic Protection, Data Communications and Tactical Data Link integration, Signal Intelligence and Jamming) is mandatory. 
  • Working knowledge of modelling, simulation and data processing procedures and applications and a working knowledge of engineering and scientific processes.
  • Knowledge of different signal interface standards (e.g. RS422, NMEA, Asterix, etc.), and data capture systems is mandatory.  
  • Knowledge of internet protocols and networking standards (e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, VPNs, etc.) is mandatory. 
  • Knowledge of software Programming (C++ or C# and Python) and development is mandatory.  
  • Networking principles, including TCP/IP, UDP, VPNs & NMEA knowledge is mandatory.

ABOUT THE JOB:

To provide specialist corrosion engineering expertise through the research, development, testing, and implementation of corrosion protection technologies, ensuring the reliability, availability, and lifecycle sustainability of naval platforms and maritime systems.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Grade 12
  • Relevant Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Engineering, Corrosion Engineering, or related engineering discipline.

 

Added Advantage: 

  • Honours Degree or Master's Degree in Corrosion Engineering, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Marine Engineering, or related field.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 7 years' relevant experience in corrosion engineering, materials engineering, marine engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Proven experience in corrosion assessment, mitigation, and protection of marine or industrial systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory testing, electrochemical analysis, and materials performance evaluation.
  • Experience in the development and testing of coatings, corrosion-resistant materials, and protective technologies.
  • Experience conducting technical investigations and root-cause analyses relating to material degradation and corrosion failures.

Corrosion Engineering Research, Development and Innovation

  • Lead research and development initiatives focused on naval corrosion prevention and control technologies.
  • Develop next-generation corrosion-resistant materials, alloys, coatings, and surface treatment solutions for maritime applications.
  • Investigate corrosion mechanisms affecting naval vessels, offshore structures, and marine systems.
  • Advance innovative and environmentally sustainable corrosion mitigation technologies for operational deployment.
  • Translate scientific research outcomes into practical engineering solutions that enhance fleet capability and operational readiness.
  • Support the transition of laboratory-developed technologies into production and operational environments.

 

Corrosion Testing, Evaluation and Scientific Analysis

·       Design and execute laboratory and field-based corrosion testing programmes.

·       Simulate long-term marine exposure conditions through accelerated corrosion and environmental testing.

·       Conduct electrochemical analysis and interpret degradation behaviour of materials and protective systems.

·       Evaluate the impact of biofouling, microbiologically influenced corrosion, and marine environmental factors on naval assets.

·       Analyse corrosion data and identify trends, risks, and performance improvement opportunities.

·       Provide scientifically validated recommendations for material selection, coatings, and corrosion management strategies.

 

Naval Systems Support and Technical Advisory Services

  • Educate the South African Navy (the client) personnel on corrosion prevention practises.  
  • Provide specialist corrosion engineering advice to clients, acquisition programmes, and naval projects.
  • Translate client requirements into technically feasible and cost-effective corrosion protection solutions.
  • Support the acquisition, maintenance, and sustainment of naval systems through specialist engineering input.
  • Assess corrosion-related risks and provide mitigation strategies throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Contribute specialist expertise to design reviews, engineering investigations, and technical evaluations.
  • Support decision-making through evidence-based technical recommendations and risk assessments.

 

Predictive Modelling, Asset Integrity and Lifecycle Management

·       Develop predictive models and analytical tools to forecast corrosion degradation and structural failure risks.

·       Apply data-driven approaches to evaluate asset integrity and remaining useful life of naval structures.

·       Support the development of predictive maintenance strategies that optimize operational availability and reduce lifecycle costs.

·       Analyze environmental and operational factors affecting material performance and durability.

·       Contribute to fleet sustainment strategies through advanced condition monitoring and performance assessment methodologies.

 

Stakeholder Engagement, Support and Capability Development

·      Build and maintain collaborative relationships with clients, industry partners, academia, and research institutions.
